need emissions for a 3rd gen
 

so its that time again, haven't needed one since they changed the emissions testing.
can some one briefly tell me whats been changed and what a 3rd gen rx7 needs in order to pass?
also send me a private message for shops that can help me pass :evilgrin:

Unless your car is OBD II, the test is now a two speed idle test. They test at idle then at 3000RPM I think. No rollers so there's no load on the engine. They only look at CO and HC not NO anymore. There are cameras and stuff in the test centers now so I don't think any shops can "help" pass. Tune lean for the test to drop CO and HC.

If your car is OBD II (I have no idea if late model FDs came with) then your're in for a scanner plug in test and that's it. As long as there's no codes and the computers happy you pass.

If imported FD's of '97+ did not come with ODB II computers then I don't know what your going to do. The drive clean computer will say you need a OBD II test but you wont be able to do it...

Acquaintance of mine has an Integra he swapped from OBD II to I. Don't have any idea how hes going to pass, lol.

EDIT:

Just read a post on here stating that no FDs came with OBD II. I don't have any idea how the imports will be treated for testing...

Imports are registered as grey market vehicles and only have to do the 2 speed idle test as a hot rod.

Mine was awful, I think I posted the exact results in another thread last November when I got it done, but off the top of my head: HC limit was 600, I blew 4500 or so.

I got a conditional pass.

Two speed idle test for grey market is like a free pass for a lightly modded 7.
Silver fd passed with very good results. Specs were complete 99 spec engine, oem cat and blitznur Catback.

Red fd was slightly different, as it passed with the ported motor, still had twins, oem cat, and a blitz exhaust again.
Both had air pumps and did not have emissions removed.

Most people feel that the two speed idle is hell for fd's but I actually saw water out of the tail pipe! :D

My friend who smogged mine could either get it to pass at idle or at 3k but not both.
lol he finally turned my idle up to 2k and it passed. Then he turned the idle back down and off I went to pick up my new stickers.

This was after new airpump, full tune-up (plugs, wires, 02 sensor and filters) and with my stock exhaust/cat back in place. I still had the Pettit downpipe and Cheap Bastard intake (and a few other things) on the car though.

i did mine last year and passed surprising well, mods are
- fmic, intake, hks down pipe, highflow cat, blitz exhaust
i had not gotten my PFC yet so i just jimmy rigged a tube from the cat to my air pump hose, did an oil change and that was it.

when they tested it she just plugged the sniffer into the tail pipe and ran the curb and 2500rpm test, car passed fine even without the pfc and being tuned properly.

the new rules they brought out actually made it easier for me to pass since before when i took it for a e test they did not do the two speed idle test they did the normal dyno one and it failed :S i looked at the standards/limits when it failed and they were set much lower and with the two speed idle they were higher.

good luck with it, if your fd is running well im sure you will have no problems, the place i went to is in st catherines off of lake st and they only do two speed idles

I am due in the fall. I think I am in big trouble, based on my mods.

You and me both, my fingers are crossed but I'm not holding my breath.




I might need a new cat - are a lot of the people that are passing running highflows? I might as well upgrade if I'm replacing.

Anyone try the test with a pfc?

Just fail miserably. It's what I did... then the mechanic at crappy tire didn't have the first clue at how to get a rotary to pass... I bought him a coffee, shot the shit with him for a bit and told him I'd probably need new unported rotor housings before I'd pass... he priced them out... laughed at the cost and gave me my conditional pass.

Went and got my 2 year sticker the next day.
