Car looks good in the pictures, milage looks normal for a 93.
Check the car over for any body damage and expect to spend a few thousand on unforseen problems down the road....:)
Good Luck with the hunt.

Quarterz 10-03-10 06:12 PM

Of course... How far down the road would you think and should i try and get it for cheaper? Or do you think its actually worth the 12.5k

thewird 10-04-10 04:40 AM

Price is pretty decent for a LHD. Before buying any FD, it would be a good idea to take it to an experienced rotary mechanic to have a look over. Mainly to check compression and any obvious problems.

As long as car is well maintained, generally on a near stock car there aren't huge issues often. But since these cars are 17 years old now, problems do occur especially with the sequential turbo system. Extra attention needs to be paid to modified ones as well. Also, don't cheap out, use 94 octane.

Have a look through the forums and faqs here to get an idea of what your getting into. I generally think if you don't have 4-5k prepared to drop on the car after its purchase cost, you shouldn't buy an FD yet. Not saying your going to spend it, but you should be ready to spend it if need be.

I also looked at this 7 a couple of months ago before I bought my JDM, my biggest concern was the rust in the wheel wells. I was going to have a body shop have look over to see how bad the rust really was and also take it into Mazdee's which is not that far from the seller. The seller had no problem with that as long as it was at my expense. Other than that I did considered buying the car and I believe he has lower his price since I saw the car. I believe his son is on the forum and has a 20B.

Everything sounded good but this lol... Im a student so its kinda hard to have 4-5k extra right away... I figured id buy one that was decent right now and save cause i do expect to have to spend that...

Ouu good to know... Do you happen to remember how much the cost for mazdees and the getting it looked at by a body shop was?

Take thewird's advice--he has lots of experience. You cannot afford it.

Forget and Did not go thru with it, but a word of advice you better have some extra cash, already spent over 2 grand in the last month on upgrades and minor fix-ups. But that just me, things I felt needed to be done and more to do before next spring.

Quarterz 10-04-10 12:43 PM

The only possible way i could have a 4k extra is if i get a cheaper FD and if im paying like 6-8k wont it be in pretty beat up shape? Ugh... Do i really have to go back to being a dreamer lol... I thought 10-12k would be enough to work with...

Zhé 10-04-10 01:34 PM

if the mileage is 150 000km, and it hasn't had a engine rebuild yet, you might need one soon

Double_J 10-04-10 03:05 PM

In my for sale thread you asked how much I got for my RHD FD. I got my full asking price. I spent 7,500 on the car and around 22,000 in rebuilds and upgrades. That is a lot of money and I could have saved a TON of cash had I been able to do the work myself, had I planned my upgrade process better.
I lost my shirt on that car, and I have decided my next car I am buying someone else hard work - as I did.

The car above doesn't seem like a bad price because it has a few mods, and its LHD ( LHD usually have a better resale ). Why do you want this car? Do you think it is a daily driver? Rx7's can break, and break often. Do you need to have $4k sitting in the bank for this car? Maybe, maybe not. You never know when something is going to go bad. One thing is for sure, it will break down and it often costs a fair bit to fix.

If my son wanted an FD and was in school I might suggest he look else where. They are cool cars though and that's why we are all here after all. Good luck, and welcome to the site.

Ka Kui 10-04-10 03:34 PM

150,000km on engine, probably needs an engine rebuild sooner later...... like "thewird" said, be prepare to have at least 4-5k to spend AFTER purchasing this FD. RX-7 is not a car that you just buy and then drive it, it's the maintenance and time that comes after....... just heads up for you!

2Fierce 10-04-10 06:04 PM

The very first mod you do to an rx7 is buy another car for a daily driver.

10k is NOT enough for an FD. 10k is what you sink into the fd lol.

If you want a clean LHD car, I would suggest saving more money and importing from the states. www.speedforsale.com

84stock 10-04-10 06:17 PM

Ditto, you need to have a back up bankroll with a FD for sure.

Smitter 10-04-10 07:08 PM

dont let these guys discourage you too much. but take into account what they say. sure it will break down. and you'll need money to fix it. but if your not relying on it for everyday transportation you can park it until the funds become available. just depends on how bad you want it.

4-5 grand bank roll for repairs is a little much. especially if you can do the work yourself. maybe these guys are including the mod bug. i have spent more in mods than repairs by a ratio of about 10-1. mods are cause you want too.....not because you have too.

on the other hand. if you cant do the work yourself and your engine pops. 4-5 grand wont be enough.

thewird 10-04-10 07:13 PM

I mention 4-5k as that is the worst case scenario which is a motor blowing. Any of the rotary shops should be able to offer a 4-5k rebuild doing everything unless you have other external issues.

I don't want to discourage by any means but spending your whole budget on the car and leaving nothing for a "in case of emergencies" is not the best decision.

thewird

Ka Kui 10-04-10 08:28 PM

Agree with thewird and 2Fierce, 4-5k is for emergencies.... 150,000km on engine, may need to rebuild engine soon. Secondly, do you have another daily car / winter car? Unless you want to drive FD in winter, or else, 2Fierce is right, get another daily driver.... Not to discourage you here.

HEVNSNT 10-04-10 08:29 PM

^^Agree with the_wired^^

Even basic maintenance and insurance is expensive.

bbch44 10-04-10 08:31 PM

its all up to you, you think the deal is worth it then go with your instincts.
it's hard to find deals on LHDs now a days...
but just remember the advice these guys gave you.

FD's are bigger bitches than girlfriends sometimes. lmao

Zhé 10-04-10 08:44 PM

it seems like he already have a 2010 genesis, so he is good for winter.
also, from my personal experience, it seems like the harder you push your rx7, the faster little things will break, so the less you track it and street race, the less you'll have to spend on maintenance. i spent only about 1000-1500$ for maintenance over 3 years of daily driving from april - november, but i baby my car. and the amount of $ i spent modifying is a completely different story. this is just me though

Quarterz 10-04-10 10:53 PM

Well this is what i was thinking... I would buy it... Or just one right now before winter so i have it... Get winter tires cause id have to drive it sometimes... As id be sharing a winter beater (some shitty kia)... And drive it as little as possible... Once winter ends and its spring ill drive it a daily but have some money saved up from over the winter... Then summer ill be making lots more money(im a student) and would be willing to pay whatever necessary to keep her alive and well! So basically it would have to last me till spring/summer with minimal driving..?

And dont worry about the discouragement.. If its what i need to hear its what i need to hear... Ive just been in love for years and never came close to this much money spare in my hand so i wanted to take advantage of it... If i dont get an FD im gonna have to buy something else and hate my life but if its what you guys think i should do ill probably try my best to go with that... So yea just be honest!

And this is a good idea! Only thing id hate about that is are you able to change the speedometer to work in kms?

kalinakona 10-04-10 11:31 PM

Well, I'll throw in my .02. I got my FD last March, and I am also a student. I got my FD for 12,000 with a new engine, not a rebuild, exhaust, and a radiator. Its my daily driver and I haven't had any costs (knock on wood) for repairs. I have modded it though. So its all in the circumstances. Talk to your parents also. Maybe they will back you up if something happens. My mom used to race and understands the random occurrences, and she helps work on my car with me, so when something does happen she is right there beside me. Maybe they will help you out fund wise or something. Either, if you check if out get compression numbers and maybe have a few extra dollars saved up since it may need a rebuild in the near future.

eViLRotor 10-05-10 12:44 PM

These threads come up all the time.

There is a difference between really loving the FD and just wanting one. If you really love it, you'd never consider subjecting it to any form of winter driving in Ontario.

If you really love it, you'll wait until you can truly afford this car and give it the proper upkeep it deserves.

As a side note, US FD's have speedos in both mph and kmh, so you wouldn't necessarily need to swap out the cluster. While changing clusters is not difficult, it will alter your odometer.
