Small steel like structure capable of consuming large quantities of cabbage...makes a great lawn ornament!

A bigger money-pit and more high-maintenance than a trophy wife, but arguably more pleasurable after spending said funds.

iowan82 01-31-12 11:52 PM

Best thread ever haha and the dude with the 3 rx7s i dislike u right now..:( sad day...lol i want another so bad

Bwek 02-01-12 02:33 AM

I've had 3, I will have another one day and it will be from the southern states where there is no rust lol.

:( but right now this Civic will be the death of me to hell with gas mileage and drivablity, At least the lexus satisfies my winter drift sessions

RXeckless 02-01-12 05:02 AM

What's a RX-7? A 5 year project that takes 10 to 15 years and it may still may be not quite right.

IPWinsor 02-01-12 09:06 AM

What really sucks as this weather feels like March, which makes me think/feel like I am only another month from putting the car back on the road, but of course its not another month; its more like 2 and a half. Sigh....

I think the Perfect Rx7 would be one that can Fornicate with the owner..sort of best of both worlds!..goes and B***s!
BUT knowing my luck it would just blow up and say to me:"Here I just Fornicated ya..pay for THIS!"..story of me life..lol!

IAN 02-01-12 02:50 PM

One kid costs more then an rx7. One divorce costs more then an RX7. Taxes on my house costs more then my RX7. See the picture? Everybody picks there poison. Unfortunately mine was a RX7.... Probable would be better off without but hey... its a hobbie.... Can't take it with you and I enjoy the track time and drinking RXeckless beer at his house when we "work" on his RX7..

IPWinsor 02-01-12 03:02 PM

Well said Ian; kids (I have none) are not cheap. Some guys spend $1000s on golf clubs, memberships and green fees.

My RX7 is an investment "vehicle" that I can actually drive. Its value does not plummet because of poor sales, low interest rates, a bad quarter, or the excessive borrowing habits of governments.

Bwek 02-01-12 04:55 PM

I would never call an rx7 an investment, that word implies you will make money of the car in a few years lol, it's a car waste of money but the fun is worth the coat

Ka Kui 02-01-12 06:12 PM

I miss my FD RX-7 too, but FD = Financial Disaster.....

orion84gsl 02-01-12 07:36 PM

A hobby is something you sink money into without ever thinking you'll make any back or even get what you put into it. That's how you know its something you love, when you drop thousands and feel good about it. I also did the math, based on the average figure of $5k/year/kid, my car has worked out to be far cheaper than a child would be and I don't have to worry about keeping this girl off the pole.

Stripclub is my hobby. I love strippers.

Depending on your speed going into the corner, and the traction of the road surface, sometimes you should be worried about keeping your girl from being wrapped around a pole...

*looks around* why's everyone looking at me, did I miss something?!

Seriously though, I miss mine too. May will be my 10th year on the club and RXeckless was right - a 5yr project going into it's 10th year, always getting better, but will (hopefully) never be complete. I don't know what I'd do with myself if ever I actually *finished* the project and couldn't think of something else worth doing... I'd probably have to go turbo, heaven forbid ;)

FC3Sdrift 02-02-12 09:08 AM

I think RX7 are more of an addiction than hobby.
alot of people try to quit rx7's, some do but most get back on the rx7's sooner or later.
even with the people who successfully quit rx7's they still suffer from cravings everytime they see someone with an rx7.

maybe one of us should invent a patch that will put small amounts of carbon monoxide and burnt oil into our blood to help with the withdrawals

IPWinsor 02-02-12 09:35 AM

That is so true. I had 2 different RX7's from 86 to 2001.

I moved to a house with a 2 car garage in 2004, and last summer when the cars that had occupied the garage moved out, my first thought was "I NEED to buy an RX7". "I HAVE to buy another RX7".

I was powerless over this compulsion.

Is there a 12 Step program for us?

rx7racerca 02-02-12 01:30 PM

One good thing about NA's - dead reliable. I've replaced the clutch, brake pads, and exhaust on mine, changed fluids, adjusted the front wheel bearings multiple times (keep getting told they seem loose at tech for autocross/lapping), and a couple of bulbs - and that's about it for repairs in 14 years of ownership :)

I walk past mine every day, red paint peeking out under the car cover in my garage, it and me waiting anxiously for the day we can hit the streets together again.

Bwek 02-02-12 04:14 PM

ya.. My n/a's never died, but the 6 port turbo lasted about 40,000km's after i turbod it i supposed it had something to do with me using a greddy emanage blue lol

Buggy 02-02-12 05:22 PM

If you think Rx-7's are bad you have to get into the old school cars. They do cost as much as a kid I think. My Rx-4 has eaten up a lot of coin. I do kind of miss my old NA for the reliability. It just won't die. Poor car has been through hell and it still won't quit. Only problem was it's SLOW! As for satisfying my addiction for rotaries through winter, I either fire up the Rx-4 and listen to the beautiful BRAP BRAP bridgy idle, or I watch my videos from DGRR last year. It keeps me going day by day.....

vipernicus42 02-02-12 07:21 PM

I can't wait to get mine back. Last I heard it was still on the rotisserie at ClassicAuto, waiting for me to finish the wiring harness. I'm finally on the last bits of that this week, so I should be shipping that down to him to get the project moving again and crossing my fingers that some time this summer we wrap it up.

It's been a hell of a project from when I got it a decade ago until now. I love my winter car (2010 Mazda6) but I miss my 7 like nothing else and I can't wait to get back behind the wheel again. With my rear-end swap giving me a limited-slip diff and rear discs, the replacement of every single bushing, and the upgrade to Hawk pads, it should handle very nicely on the autocross course. And, of course, the complete body overhaul means it'll look damn good while we're doing it, too!

sctRota 02-02-12 07:34 PM

Bah, I see mine everyday.. So why would miss mine? I drive it everyday, yell at it everyday, and also start the Tii up every week hehehe. I think I'm content:)

Bwek 02-03-12 01:51 AM

viper 2010 mazda6 is a very nice car! i loved working on them even though they had that stupid spider recall on them

ive been watching my old youtube videos lol kinda holds me over, even though i know for a fact that my next FC wont be rotary powered, the 13b N/a just cant compete with a modern 4 cylinder motor a fully built honda K20 will make the same kind of power as a PP motor with nearly the same kind of revs and torque and will still idle and drive around the city like a stock motor :(

So i'll just v8 swap my car with an all aluminum truck motor super cheap,

...

Yeah, I love it. It fills all the gaps left by my 7 - it's better on fuel, can confortably seat 4-5 adults, has cruise control and air conditioning, and it's covered by warranty, roadside assistance, and comprehensive insurance. If anything goes wrong with it I just make a phone call to the dealership and go "It's -40C out and I don't have a garage, I don't want to deal with this shit, you guys do it"

It's a great road trip car, but I still miss my 7 for all the summertime fun! I haven't done any work on it, so I'm hoping that when the time comes it won't be too bad. It definitely looks like they left enough room to do most things. I still can't believe that spider recall though - I laughed out loud when I got that in the mail. Mazda, protecting us from the evils of spiders one car at a time!

I saw a very battered and beaten RX8 at Milton Canadian Tire yesterday. It was all covered in salt and dirty, it had what it looked like rust streaks on the body panels and bumper that seemed to emanate from the wheel wells and hatch, and the front bumper had a fence post sized indent in it, and a piece missing or cut out. Very sad.

RacerJason 02-05-12 11:41 AM

The first 7 I bought was actually free, that was in 1997, I still have it and it's never turned a friggin' wheel. I've spent a small fortune on it yo yo employment be damned. Every spring I get asked if the car is coming out and have to explain that it will never see the road and until I get a bloody tow vehicle it's not even going to get to the track. Now that I think about it, my neighbour across the road has a vert and having lived here since September 2008 I've never seen it on the road or even heard it start up. Mehhh.

Just last night a friend of my wife's was staying over and discussed with wonder in her voice what a non-running car is doing in the garage. I said you like to read books, I like to tinker with cars.

Probably owned by someone who drives an Rx-7 in the summer. To these people, an Rx-8 is a rotary 'beater' designed with the sole purpose: to satisfy rotary cravings in the months unsuitable for Rx-7 driving. Sad... but true. :egrin:

That is just soooo bourgeois!

Buggy 02-06-12 06:08 AM

I just couldn't resist. The roads were nice and clean yesterday and it was fairly warm. I broke out my TII and went for a drive. It was FUN! I washed it and promptly put it back in storage.
