Good work and tow truck
 

Hey I always seem to need a truck to haul a trailer, transport cars and parts, and general house stuff

Plus the rx7 always needs the occasional saving

I just find I need a truck more than ever now, but I do not want to truck as a daily driver, I am spoilt I love my leather seats and sport suspension.

Now if I get one for occasional use is the isurance cheaper?

Also I was thinking a cheap dodge ram 1500 or a Chevy 1500 I believe these are the the for towing I think.

It'll have to be properly insured for all the months you plan to use it, so in that respect, no it will not be less expensive. What I and I bet most others do with the 7's is have it fully insured for the 8ish months/year I drive it, then drop it to fire and theft (comprehensive) during the winter months. Saves me a few hundred bucks while the car is on jack stands waiting for work to be finished.

hybrid buy an 87 or older from the states from the south where there is no rust and way easier to import it ... ebay always has good deals I'm always on there

Because my RX7 is not my daily driver, I got a great rate on insurance. It is with Lant/Hagerty insurance 'Silver Wheel'. I bet an older pickup would qualify.

yeah i was thinking about the age for insurance as a classic but the silver wheel does not cover towing or hauling vehicles.

I think I've finally decided on Chevrolet Trailblazer or GMC Envoy for a tow vehicle. My wife can use it for her commute (five minutes) but I'll use it on weekends. With the right rear end gearing it will take 7200 pounds, is reasonably priced (thinking 06/07) and there are a good variety of trim levels/options.

I had a blazer 2009 and towed a few 7s from the states and I was disappointed with it, it pulled the load but I felt the load tugging on the truck really bad gas mileage and just an uncomfortable as a tow vehicle and I had the v8.

I have heard good things about the Durango but no personal experience though

I've heard a lot of good stuff about the durango as a tow vehicle as it's a mid-size with a full-size towing capacity. (that's from word of mouth)

My dad has an 07 Expedition that we use for our boat, which, along with the trailer, weighs in around 7-8000lbs, and it pulls it out of the water on the ramp without flinching. I've moved the boat around the driveway and was quite surprised at the relatively small effect of the load. We used a 4.6L F-150 the first time we put it in, and my dad said it was noticeable but not to bad. Keep in mind, we didn't pull it out with that truck though.

The surburbans are also great and come with a 2500 frame. An Excursion might be another good option. theres one with 150km for $7 at jp motors in burlington

I'd expect the Durango to perform a lot like the Dakota - and a friend of mine was not happy with his as a tow vehicle (or generally, actually). He said it was quite thirsty, loaded or not (AWD, quad cab - and the thirsty, yet middling performance seems to match my experience renting them a couple times to haul around some moderate loads), and yet struggled to tow their moderately sized holiday trailer. When it was hit and totalled off, he was glad to find the full-size 2010 F150 he got to replace it got much better mileage, towing or unloaded, and it towed the trailer easily in the mountains - and I'm pretty sure his has the base 4.6L engine.

Humm never hear much about the f150 , I do know the dodge rams are cheap

There's a wicked cummins 5 speed 2500 ram for sale in hamilton for $5 right now. It was used for fifth wheel hauling so you know it'll be in good shape mechanically...well you'd hope it would be. Since you don't plan on using it daily and just to haul that may be a good alternative. Fuel consumption is pretty good since they're only 6 cylinders, and have enough torque to move the world off it's orbit.

Insurance on a truck is cheap by the way. Same coverage as my taurus, but less than half the price. 4 years difference but the truck is worth a bit more.

If you can find it a Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cummins diesel is about the best you can get for towing. Loads of power to do anything you want and if treated right, you can't kill the Cummins. I owned a 93 Ram D250 (3/4 ton) with the 1st gen Cummins and 5 speed standard trans and even at almost half a million KM's, the engine ran absolutely perfect. Even started without an issue up to -27C without the block heater. That old diesel would pull off 28mpg with 3000 lbs in the bed running down the highway. Even towing a 7000lb travel trailer is managed close to 14mpg. Most newer gas half tons have trouble getting this in town unloaded and my dad's 07 Ram half ton with Hemi engine only managed 10mpg towing the same trailer at the same speed as my now gone 93 diesel.

Besides the beast that is the Cummins powered rams, about the only other trucks I would consider decent for towing and general ride quality are the half ton Rams and GM half tons. I owned a 89 Chevy half ton for a short time and it is surprisingly comfortable and powerful. Reliable as well. Sorry Ford truck lovers, I have no love for your trucks. Seen nothing but problems and had nothing really good to say about those trucks besides the old 300 I6 that Ford used to use. Excellent engine, Ford should never have stopped producing it.

I keep looking at this tow truck every time I go to my buddy's place..they want $4 k for it.

I had an 86 F150 extended cab with an 8ft box and a 302. I pulled a bunch of FC's and other cars all around Ontario on top of a 2700lb flat bed i bought off the side of a country road coming back from buying parts one day. I even once carried 700 sq. ft of maple hardwood in the bed (one load)... never had a problem pulling.

Eventually the body pretty much fell off the truck and I always had electrical problems with it so I scrapped it and the 302 is now at my friend's house being fit into an FC.

if you plan on using it mostly for towing it's hard to go against a mid to late 90's cummins dodge or a 94-03 diesel ford. They're cheap, bulletproof, and tow anything.
