heh, guess a s4 n/a block with ~300k on it doesn't like 10 psi of boost and 8000+ rpm regularly?

10 months later...

The engine above appears to have failed simply because of high mileage and stupid 3-piece seals, the top half of an apex seal basically fell out

Ended up buying a ready-to-run turbo engine, dropped it in... and it ran like *** because i used the wrong rear counterweight

Pulled the transmission, installed the right weight and all was well again. Drove the car regularly right through to December.

Spent the last few months doing some more electrical work, stripping all the sound deadening tar from the floor, relocating the battery to the rear bin... fired up the engine the other day for the first time since Dec... and it turned the oil into a milkshake.

Pulled the oil pan and found coolant seeping through between the rear rotor housing and rear iron

Looks like i need a rebuild before i'll be driving it this year

so - cause of the failure: the goddamn tension bolts weren't torqued... like at all. slightly over hand tight

at first glance everything looks ok other than this one housing. how bad are these chatter marks? they're only really along the bottom and they are worst near the center, and taper off near both edges

engine runs! timing was wacky, i couldn't get it set quite right so i thought I had installed the CAS gear backwards. Pulled the front cover but the gear is correct

so that was a huge waste of time and i'm still not sure why i can't get the timing mark to line up

its back together, been driving the last few days. engine seems great now, but my new 'good' transmission is ****. bearing noises all over the place and everything just feels loose

guess the next project is rebuilding the original transmission!

When you make updates you really make updates

I feel your pain on the coolant seal. I bought a 6port engine to do a quick +T on and it was weeping coolant externally between the rear iron and housing. I tried EVERYTHING to put a bandaid on it, and in the process junked everything but the rotating assembly (basically the only thing of value in a stock 6 port anyway )

Glad you did this engine yourself, you'll know it's good then. Nicely done!
