Bringing the Pig Back Out in 2018

Some of you may remember the car and my race stories about racing the #23 RX7 in CASC Events going back to 1997. It's astounding that the car has been a race car for 20 years....

Anyways, in an event in 2016, a co-driver overheated the motor sitting and idling the car during a red flag halt. He finished the race running the car air cooled and drove it back to the pits. Yes, he finally killed the great motor put together by Joe at RPM back in 2004. The car was winning races right up to that point and in its last race, it won its class (GT4) and even led the race overall with the Fastest race lap for 90 minutes of the race. Its a great race car and very well balanced and up to that moment, dead reliable.

So now I have pulled the motor out of it and am gathering the pieces to have it built up again and the plan is to race it again in 2018. I am now running the car on NA Tires slicks (fantastic tires by the way), but everything is as it was for the last 4 or 5 years. When it comes out again, we will have a fair bit more aero, hopefully more power and yes, I am finally replacing the stock single piston calipers for some 4 Piston Turbo rotors and calipers on the front. Its a great car and I really miss racing it. I may only do Historic Events in the car and maybe Endurance races, as they tend to be less hectic.

Anyways, thought you guys may be interested in hearing this and here are some shots of the RX7 in all its glory as well as the rest of the team including the Cougars that I have been spending most of my time on.

Eric

Sorry to thread jack, but curious about what pads and rotors you were using on the single piston calipers.

Very, very happy right now. I was extremely worried that the Joe Ferguson ported irons were going to be trashed after the overheating session and all of the race hours on the motor. I was already looking for new TII S4 irons due to the lip on the hot side. My main concern was that the wear was going to be deeper than they could repair them. So I bought a dial indicator and checked them out. Most of the lips are in the .002" range and the deepest is .004". When I was speaking to Chip at Chip Motorsports in Warren Michigan, he said the deepest cut he would take would be .006", so I am fine.

Extremely happy as the porting job Joe did on these irons was amazing and the car made so much power and had great throttle response with excellent torque. Oh man I want to put this motor back together again and get the car back out. Just to give you guys an idea of the torque, it had enough to slightly spin the rear slicks coming out of Turn 10 at CTMP in second gear. The motor was awesome and my goal is to get it all back throwing flame again.

Eric.

I am running the stock brakes that came on the car. Single piston front rotors and solid disc in the rear. Right now I am using a combination of a Hawk Black on the rear and a KFP Gold pad on the front. Honestly, these brakes work fantastic at CTMP and very good at Shannonville with lots of ducting. I did melt the seals out of the front calipers once during a very hard 1 hour race at Shannonville about 15 years ago. Still using all stock parts including stock bias valve. Car works great.

That' super generous and appreciated. Are they 4 lug rotors? I am still rocking the 4 light set up.

I also travel to St Albert a fair bit and I can maybe coordinate with you on one of them.

thanks

Eric

Can anyone tell me why I am very excited about getting this motor reassembled and bringing the car out again? Take a look at the intake gasket that came off the motor and see if you can see why.

Looks like the gasket could have been trimmed to match port job?? More air = more power
