7s day in the GTA

Shall we try for an informal meet on the 7s day weekend in July? 7s day is on Sunday this year, which should be convenient, weather allowing.

Rotaries are all about driving, so maybe we should meet a bit outside the city this time, away from cops and nervous security guards.

This sounds interesting.
I'd be game. Where do you have in mind?

HiWire 06-17-19 10:55 AM

A gathering, and a drive in the country. Buggy mentioned the Bruce County drive that happened a few years ago, which reminded me that the best roads are well outside the GTA area. The main problem is that the GTA is still the best place to start the event, because the majority of people interested are in the GTA.

Looking at the map, the best areas to drive in Southern Ontario near the GTA are Hamilton, Niagara, Bruce County, and the Peterborough areas. Another possibility is driving Highway 3 along the north shore of Lake Erie. I'm not sure how all the routes are working re: cops or construction.

The easiest suggestion would be to drive Highway 7 (107) on 7s day. There is a great, easy to drive (and lots of gas stations) stretch eastbound from Markham to Brooklin or we could do the westbound stretch from Vaughan to Guelph or Kitchener. You can't get lost and there are plenty of places to stop along the way or at the end.

If people are looking for a more challenging drive, we could gather near Gravenhurst and drive Southwood Road (13) and maybe Muskoka Beach:

We could also set it up as a 2-day thing and people could join either stage (or both) for the weekend.

I'd be interested if I can get my car tuned in time :)

Just a heads up Southwood Rd. is a disaster! I live 5 min away and my father lives right in the middle of Southwood Rd. After this last winter the road is a mess with washouts, potholes the size of Watermelons, and the road is still covered in sand/salt!! I drove my Vert on it last weekend and wouldnt dare go over 40KM!

Maybe we can meet in Hamilton and do the Niagara Cruise.

HiWire 06-19-19 03:24 PM

OK, so Southwood is a no-go for now.

The Niagara Parkway is an easy drive, but it's slow and watched by cops. Daytime traffic on the QEW during summer weekends is heavy – best to avoid it during the peak hours.

I don't think you've been to our "Niagara Cruise".

I've been on A niagara cruise years ago with a different club and it was awesome. I don't know the roads well enough to lead, but if someone else is running it I'd be in for sure

Niagara cruise for nostalgic reasons! :)
Memories...

Alternatively, we can all go to the beach up at Keswick and have a good time!

Sure. I'm always game.

It's next next weekend ... get something going ...

Meet again at Burger King by Brant and QEW at 7am for a nice rip?

HiWire 06-25-19 09:36 AM

Sounds good – do you have a route map?

Can someone cross-post the details (when they are finalized) to RX-8 Club and anywhere else people might be interested?

Certain sections are under construction. Gives me an excuse to run it tomorrow night and see if all is clear. Anyone care to join? Usual hwy20 meet?

What time you want to go?

mr.zoom 06-30-19 08:27 AM

All good.

pd_day 07-02-19 09:11 AM

Thanks @mr.zoon for scoping out the route.

Lets firm this up!

What time should we start? 8am if we want to have a good run.

HiWire 07-02-19 02:44 PM

Yes, 8 am is probably the earliest time people can get together. Same starting location?

pd_day 07-03-19 06:54 AM

We can meet at the Williams Coffee parking lot at Brant and QEW or Tim Hortons at Hwy20/Mud St.

HiWire 07-04-19 03:24 PM

Looks like there is a possibility (40%) of thunderstorms in the early morning and in the afternoon on Saturday.

tmrx7 07-04-19 03:46 PM

Lucky 7's day is Sunday :)
