1976 RX-4 coupe 20B N/A!

Well as many of you know, Dan and I have this thing for old vintage Mazda's. Not sure what it is, but they are awesome.

So heres Dans latest project:

He bought this 76 RX-4 coupe from Logan (GtoRX7) in Ohio a couple months ago, which was intended for someone else who backed out of the deal once it was landed in Canada. So Dan just kept it and decided to build it.

So the insanity began.

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...B/DSCF3005.jpg

We had a 20B engine kickin around so we decided to put it to good use.

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...B/DSCF3006.jpg

We re-worked the stock oil pan because the oil pickup actually cleared everything!

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...B/DSCF3014.jpg

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...B/DSCF3074.jpg

Clears the factory subframe by about 1/2 in

R.P.M. 03-24-08 11:58 PM

We took our Cosmo RE 13B/20B engine mounts we sell and re-worked them to fit the stock subframe in the RX-4

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...B/DSCF3082.jpg

Heres where things get crazy lol.

We have the stock intakes for it....but what fun is that?

These are stock Hybusa throttle bodies stacked together to make an ITB setp for each port on the 20B.

For the engine itself we are using S5 N/A rotors....oh and the irons are half bridge ported too :)

Pretty cool, but nothing compared to gtorx7's 20b NA engine. Drysump and mad insanity! You should build that ;)

His FD is just insane.

What are you gonna use for spark, t2 trailing coils? What about fuel management, an e11 or something non haltech?

SPILL THE BEANS!

R.P.M. 03-25-08 12:52 AM

Yeah Logans 20B N/A FD is pretty wicked, but this thing should crush it *crosses fingers* :D This setup will be rediculous, the throttle response is just going to be plain retarded haha.

I think Dan has LS1 coils in the budget for it. He bought a Wolf 3D V4, now I'm not sure if that was intended for this project or our other race car.

2Fierce 03-25-08 12:57 AM

lol, yah crushing logans FD, good luck with that. You know it tops out at 178mph. And that was the OLD engine.

I'm just gonna get you riled up so you guys snap on this thing and go all out.

R.P.M. 03-25-08 01:01 AM

Hahaha well for now we are rocking the stock RX-4 4spd transmission and the factory solid diff. AND it has 175/75/13 tires all the way around on it.

Probably just going to roast tires all day long :)

Basically the plan is to build the engine and get it running good, then see what cant handle the power and replace it lol.

2Fierce 03-25-08 01:06 AM

I need to come down, its been too long. But not to hijack your thread, I'm curious to see how this pans out. Let's just hope it doesn't go the way of the rx8...

Stay updated!

How you manage so many shop car buildups at once is beyond me.

R.P.M. 03-25-08 01:11 AM

Yeah the RX-8 is once again put on the backburner lol, my RX-2 is not going to see the road this year, but we have 4 cars that should be out and about this summer!

This RX-4 project is supposed to go with us to Deals Gap in 2 and a half weeks.......so ya....we'll see lol.
Now that the engine is mounted and we know where the TB's are going to be placed its actually going in for paint this week.

2Fierce 03-25-08 01:12 AM

4 cars? The fb, the fc, the 323 and the 4?

Did you put a v8 in that fc yet lol

R.P.M. 03-25-08 01:13 AM

Yep, 4 cars.

FB - GSL-SE
FB - GSL
FC - widebody
RX-4 20B

2Fierce 03-25-08 01:15 AM

spill the beans on the FC! what's luke putting in there? Or am I talking to luke...I think you all need your own accounts damnit

R.P.M. 03-25-08 01:17 AM

This is Joe, ready to go home to sleep....

Lukes widebody has a 13B RE on the bench ready to be built, he's basically putting it back together like we had it before except a streetport so he can drive it on the street and actually get some fuel mileage...sorta.

Aaron Cake 03-25-08 08:29 AM

This is going to sound weird, but with the rarity of these cars it's almost unfortunate that a built engine is going into it. It's a cool project, but makes me feel almost sad. :)

Bass 03-25-08 09:51 AM

When I first got into rotaries in '95, I was all about 'keepin' it stock'. But now, as long as it's a rotary in there, I say go nuts. I don't know if I'll ever come to terms with the V8 swap thing though.

23Racer 03-25-08 10:47 AM

Hey Joe, how many MPT (miles per tire) are you estimating that monster will get. I expect it will grenade the rear tires up to about 40 mph and if you get it to hook up the driveshaft and 3rd member will turn into a pretzel. Put an 8 lb flywheel on it and it will sound and rev like a flat 12 Ferrari F1 car.

I love the idea and it is really cool that you found the same thing I did in that the bore spacing of the 'Busa bodies is very close to the port spacing on a 4 port.

Also, remember that as it looks like there will be little to no cutting or welding, the car can be returned to stock in what I guess will be 3 months after Dan gets too frustrated with not being able to really give it the boot.

wow that thing looks like it will be fun to drive. cool project. keep us updated

R.P.M. 03-25-08 02:40 PM

Dan considered leaving it stock..............for about 10 minutes :)
We cant leave a vehicle stock, especially if its already had a few things done to it. The only car I'd ever leave stock is if I found one in immaculate condition that needed nothing.

Eric, the 12lb flywheel coming from Tweakit will probably do just fine ;) and the exhaust setup I have in mind is going to make to sound even sweeter, hopefully tolerable on the street too!

I highly doubt that!

Snrub 03-25-08 09:17 PM

I like it, very cool. Keep us posted.

Neo 03-25-08 09:53 PM

You guys are crazy!
That poor little RX-4. ;)

When is the new season going to start already?!?! :(

londonmazda 03-25-08 10:36 PM

proper as fuck joe.

vipernicus42 03-26-08 05:52 AM

One of the coolest things I've ever seen.

A high comp, half bridge 20b with ITB per intake runner... Totally awesome. In an oldschool rotary, twice as awesome.

What are you guys going to come up with next you crazy buggers? ;)

Jon

Aaron Cake 03-27-08 08:42 AM

I guess if there's no cutting, go for it! Hell, I'm putting a turbo 6 port in the Cosmo but going great lengths to not have to cut the car. Air to water intercooler, etc.

WanKeL FD RX-7 03-27-08 11:21 AM

super nice project

R.P.M. 05-29-08 07:48 PM

Finally some updates.

Its been a while since our fabricator has had time to work on Dans intake, but its coming along very nicely.

Still need to connect the runners to the TB flange, then I'll smooth out the insides of each runner.

The porting will get cleaned up and done properly, then all the irons get lapped and we found a local source for re-nitriding! yay!

Everything is getting powder coated in house and the engine assembly will begin. Hope to find the time to have this on the road very soon.
