White 1987 GXL Build {Lots of Pics}

Welcome all to my little spot on the inter-web. Say hello to Becky…..she’s my white girl, LOL! (^_^) She is my second…2nd Gen Rx-7…. it’s a 1987 GXL. Bought her from some kid with pricings in February. From looking at it this kid did not know what he was doing with this thing, although he had three of them in his mom’s garage, including a turbo that from the looks of it was set up to drift. The car came with a 5-speed swap that wasn’t complete (-_-). The seller “said” the car was driven by a college girl and was never raced…… but as you can see the car came with a RB race header to glass pack to 4.5” fart can! (O_o)
Also the AC was removed and air pump was disconnected……never raced I highly doubt it.

The car had some problems that he couldn’t fix (hard start, 3800rpm hesitation, random surging, and electronics) First week added the grounding wires explained in Aaron Cake’s web site(http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/grounding.htm) and set the idle. It became a daily driver.

I wanted to buy new black with chrome lip bullet mustang GT 17x8 - 235/45/17s fronts and 17x8 - 255/45/17 rears but my auto transmission started to slip if I push the car. So the clutch kit and swap parts ate into my wheel budget. These will be my winter tires for now. As far as going lower, if you have ever driven on DC streets you'd know they are horrible.

Zankoku’s are popular with the supra guys for going low enough to put the frame on the ground. (O_O) I went in on a group buy with my supra friends. They are cool but the spring rates are crazy 12/10 and the wait for them to be made and shipped from overseas was horrible. If I were to do it again I would have just bought some Tein’s with a softer rate.

Im trying to do quality name brand parts, and these had good reputation on the forums.

Any suggestions on parts are appreciated.

I have Karack's adjustable rear toe bar coming in sometime this week as well.

magus2222 11-28-11 12:55 PM

oh, well, i stand corrected. and 12/10 is massively too stiff, my zeals are 8/6 with proper valving, and i got a damned good deal on them lol.
anyways, keep it up

Lloyd

DCRotor 11-28-11 01:00 PM

Thanks... but we will see about these Zankoku's, they may be good for supras but the rx-7 is a different animal as we all know ;-). Right now its a daily driver withe some drifting on the weekend once the 5-speed goes in. By the way can I haz your seals Plezzzzzzzzz!

DCRotor 11-28-11 03:29 PM

Update:

This weekend a lot happened….. First one of my teams drift car has ate a carrier barring that cost more than getting a new aluminum ::In my Jeremy Clarkson Voice:: drive shaft. Since he is a broke B#$% I agreed to buy his Aluminum drive shaft if he does work for me. Only because I have more parts than time to put them on :(

Trans swap….. 5 speed and driveshaft

New Master and slaves from Autozone

New Maxdatrix angle kit, new inner tie rods new fuses,….etc.
http://www.norotors.com/MGalleryItem.php?id=3987

My friends 1987 supra MKIII with A 1uz-fe V8 Swap…. I’m doing the wiring later, but right now is awaiting a drive shaft.

After tightening the bolts down I found out the angle kit is coned at the bottom and I have about 5-8mm if space before its flush with the knuckle…. I will ask the drift nuts about this later.
http://www.norotors.com/MGalleryItem.php?id=4002

Almost done!
http://www.norotors.com/MGalleryItem.php?id=4003

New angle…. I do hit something but I think it’s the sway. I will make the sure after the alignment. :icon16:
http://www.norotors.com/MGalleryItem.php?id=4005

Just a reminder we had to grind down a pair of vice grips to tighten down the inner tie rods like in the tutorial in the archive section.
http://www.norotors.com/MGalleryItem.php?id=4008

Although I had a lot more parts I need to put on I did not have a chance to do it. Like Karack’s Camber link, prothane bushings, repainting the side moldings, relocation of the license plates and maybe cutting the front bumper.

:( I guess it will have to wait for another weekend.

nice stuff.,.

Thanks man. I've seen your build thread and you have a nice car too. :bigthumb:

So I took my car to the alignment shop and they couldn’t align it. Went to the Drift set-up thread and found out to get a 0 toe I have to cut some threads off the inner tie rod. I guess I'll be taking my cutter to the tie rods....:Kill1:
Also since I don’t like the way the outer rod fits on the knuckle I'll take my drill to it! :icon16:

stevensimon 12-05-11 04:31 PM

looks good. you are probably hitting the front strut bar.

most of the drift guys(including me) just ditch both sway bars. the spring rate on the coilovers is enough to make the sway bars not very effective anyway.

DCRotor 12-06-11 07:39 AM

Thanks, made a U-turn this morning and got some metal on metal grid :hah: .... so I think your right. I'll ditch it tonight or tomorrow.... right now its raining so we will see.

DCRotor 12-12-11 08:34 AM

Update:

I finally got a chance to install the Karack’s camber bar this weekend and it is a great product. I had no problems with install or fitment. Adjustability was as simple as jacking the car up and unlocking the bar (two nuts) then adjusting, and then locking the bar.

https://www.rx7club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=42407

Can’t really tell from the photos but the new camber link is about 1 inch shorter than stock.
https://www.rx7club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=42392

I also took off the front sway bar but didn’t get a chance to cut my inner tie rods down due to not having enough time. Sorry guys I have more parts than time I have to put them on so they are kinda just laying in a pile in the house.
Sway bar end link were shot anywas… :icon16:

DCRotor 12-12-11 08:36 AM

The wheels still rub the inner fender… I guess I’ll take a hammer to it. :icon16:
https://www.rx7club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=42404

While taking off the front strut bar one of my coilover studs broke off the coilover and now just spins in the hole….damn-it :cursing: :wallbash:
https://www.rx7club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=42397

I have a small problem though, when I have the car on and I’m just sitting still after about ten minutes small amounts of smoke come up from the hood. I thought it was my exhaust…. Re-sealed it. Then I thought it was the front sway bar getting hot and burning the under hood shielding. Took off the front sway, but smoke still comes.
Looked over the PD and didn’t see any fuel, but I have a banjo bolt for that. :wtf:

After driving the car this weekend removal of the front sway and strut bars has soften my ride a bit, and with the rear end being tight up and starting to premix the car seems to want to be driven faster!

taka21 12-12-11 01:14 PM

get to work brandon this becky of yours still has a long way to go ... needs more low:D

DCRotor 12-12-11 01:52 PM

Taka I'd knew you'd find your way here :suspect: You know good and well I can"t go lower because of the exhaust. Besides should you be trying to make that damn supra work....:gwink: Been down for a min. Sir

taka21 12-12-11 02:16 PM

lmao i drove it back to school today. the driveshaft works flawlessly btw and so to the tension brackets i made.
now back to becky, just ditch the crappy piping or let me cut and re weld it so it hangs higher
either way you still NEED MORE LOW :D
