what can i do aftermarket wise
 

I have an 88 non turbo and I want to do something to it to make it a little faster but I have to b able to pass California smog, does anybody have any ideas even if its something I can bolt on I can always take it off around smog time

Bolt a turbo on ha ha..

No but really there's not a whole heap of extra power to be found with the n/a rotaries without fully rebuilding and porting etc. I'm sure a good intake and exhaust would help, racing beat makes a beautiful header (and full exhaust) for the n/a. I haven't looked into it too much, I scrapped the n/a engine out of mine as soon as I bought it.

Put an LS3 in there, that'll give you plenty of n/a power (and it'll pass smog too if you do it right) lol

going to do the exhaust in a couple of week cant really do much since its my daily, hollowed out the cats cause they were clogged and now it is way to loud

if I port it I don't think it will pass smog here in California

With a normal street port you probably could. And a racing beat exhaust is pretty quiet but has a really nice tone to it.

Read up on 5th/6th port actuation, as yours probably doesn't work. You'll get more power in all the right places with it working properly.

Aside from what was mentioned above, another route would be to change the rear differential to a 4.30 GTUs rear end. Good luck though, since they're hard to find.

Gaining performance from an NA is hard, as I found out years back. I ended up swapping to a TII drivetrain and will never look back. If you have to stay NA, then another good way to increase performance is to utilize the power you have more efficiently... as in shedding weight. A lightweight flywheel, lightweight bbs rims and the aluminum hood from the convertible are an excellent place to start. You can further shed weight by changing over to the manual steering rack and ditching the power steering system. You can take it as far as you want, but I personally wouldn't like driving around in a stripped out car.
