Well.. ive never seen that break before. [Wrecked engine tear down.]

Hello again. I am still pretty new and i got something that you guys might wanna see.

So a few months ago i got 2 cars, My 89 s5 and a 88 s4 vert for $500 cash. Both cars didnt run but the s5 still had compression and is in amazing shape. The vert on the other hand is pretty much a lost cause.
The previous owner had the vert as his daily but it locked up on him 5 years ago and it has sat ever since. He bought the s5 to do an engine swap but never did it. SO i lucked up and got the cars for nothing.

Now onto the car. The owner believed that the car burned all the oil and spun a bearing or something along that line. I knew the car was junked going into it so i didnt care, my morbid curiosity has been messing with me since i got the car. No plans to get it running, but wanted it for parts. (if there was anything left in the engine)

This was my first solo tear down so it took about 4 hours to pull and 2 hours to tear down. Once i had it on the engine stand i began to see what really killed this engine.

After pulling the lower intake off it became clear what may have happened. You see that the the rod for the 5th port actuator was missing. Not only missing but appeared to be ripped out by force. The only thing tho, the engine hasnt been taken apart. I have no idea how it got snapped off. The port wasnt locked in place and i cant believe that the actuator has enough torque to bend it.

Now the scary part. To see what damaged the rod did inside before it landed in the header. I popped the cover off and pulled the rotor out to look at the damage to the housing. Its not pretty.
The rod managed to put a pretty clean gash all around the housing and managed to get lodged in the exhaust port and fused to the wall.

The gouge that ran all around the housing about a good 1/4mm deep.

Now onto the real juicy part. The Rotor. SO the part of the bar that got stuck in the exhaust put an even deeper gash in the rotor and did this.

Pretty good hole if i do say so myself. Bout 5mm wide and all the way through.

IN total. The damaged parts are the front housing, front rotor, and the center iron is junked. The front plate is fine, and the rest if the housing and rotors are perfectly fine. Actually, the housing and the rotor looks like it was replaced. The seals are perfect, and the housing has no wear at all.

All in all. This is strange but I am happy i did it. Ill clean all the parts off and do more detailed photos tonight.

Always fascinating when you strip down things that have gone bang, trying to figure out what happened is the best bit. Just a sucker when you have to fix it so In this case it’s win win.

Try dropping some solid lumps of metal inside a 4-stroke and see if that fares any better.

FINALLY AN UPDATE!!
So i got around to cleaning the whole thing and wow the damage was worse than i thought. I knew it was ugly but its almost pretty.

First run of cleaning it, just some degreaser and a power washer.

The washer got alot off but this needed some advanced elbow grease. So into the bucket of Super clean and CLR. I know there are petter ways of doing it but im a cheapa$$ sooooo.

WOW!1 That must have been instant catastrophic failure! I've never seen an auxiliary port shaft sheer like that. Pretty scary stuff.
