The "s" in GTUs stands for Supercharged!

A while back I started a thread in here where I was building a supercharged Convertible, but recently I bought a GTUs, and have decided the supercharged motor will be going into that instead. Stay tuned for the build.

My plans are to make this a street legal track car.

I will be starting with a 86-88 N/A keg with the Camden EFI intake and supercharger setup. Fuel delivery will be 720cc injecters and 255 Walbro pump. ECU will be a RTEK chipped S5 Turbo ECU with a S5 Turbo AFM and sensors. A custom wire harness will be built by me as I want to tuck all the wiring.

Transmission will be swapped for a S5 Turbo and the stock 4.3 rear end will be used.

Cooling will be by a Koyo radiator and electric fan.

This GTUs was equipped with A/C as an option, so I will be doing an A/C delete the correct way by removing all components including the under dash evaporator and replacing the logicon with a non AC logicon.

I will also be swapping out the power steering rack for a non power rack.

Radio will also be deleted with HKS gauges taking its place.

That sounds very cool. I've seen a few GTUs cars for sale over the years that were set up for racing.

I just had a 13Bre n/a built for mine. But mine will be a part time daily driver with maybe a bit of first time autoxing. No a/c or stereo delete for me.

G-getting
T-this thing
U-up and running
s-sure is expensive!
..
Good Luck to ya Bill.It is always interesting to see someone break the mold and build something outside the box of Turbo power!

What kind of horsepower can you get with a supercharger?

^smh

Anyway, so I finally picked the car up. I bought it unseen, so some surprises when I got there. The bad is that the moulding was shaved and the car was sprayed primer. I have removed filler on one side and have the moulding replaced, and will start on the other side today.

Good news is the interior is immaculate, original cloth covered Turbo seats in perfect condition, carpet was always covered with floor mats, and the dash looks new. Just need some demister and defrost grilles, idiot light surround, and a passenger a-pillar.

I learned when I picked it up that the engine is a Mazda reman (has the plaque), and before it was installed, it was torn down and Atkins apex seals were installed and all six ports are street ported. The engine has 6000 miles on it and receipts confirm all this. Nice! So, this motor will now be the motor to receive the Supercharger.

I have never owned a GTUs, so I found out that I will need to get a special driveshaft for the turbo tranny to be installed since the GTUs LSD is in a non-turbo carrier, did not know that, now I do.:)

Also found out the car has AGX shocks all the way around with racing beat springs. Also came with a racing beat lightweight flywheel, although it is a 225mm, but still a bonus.

Pics soon.....

Long overdue update.... Car is going in for paint and the engine is going together.

I changed my mind on the motor again and will now be the 89-91 Street Ported 6 Port engine. Motor is done and will be fitting the supercharger over the winter. Car should be done by summer and will be my daily summer driver.

Some updates.... Me and the Engine are heading down to Pennsylvania next week and I will be dropping it into the car. In the meantime this is where I am on the build.

Oil feed lines and return lines built and installed, need to build one more line from the oil pedestal to the supercharger. Intake hat and fuel rail back from powder coating and installed. All injectors and oil metering pump lines are installed.

This update just really tickled my pickle

Wohnson89 06-23-15 09:38 PM

^ditto. But seriously I have been watching this build very closely as I have the same crazy idea for my red 89, albeit not nearly as well thought out as yours. I might have a lot of questions for you someday once this beast is up and running.

I would run some type of water/meth injection in you upper intake manifold to keep the Temps down. The casting are over sized, thick, and hold in a ton of heat. Honestly if you want the most power with this setup when the motor is warm or cold using all factory sensors, and TB make a plenum yourself out of thin plate aluminum.

Water/Meth injection is in the plans.
