RX-7 with a little dash of 240

Yep. Someone else is gonna "ruin" an FC.
Backstory: A few years back I got bit by the drift bug and got the last pick on my list, a 1987 RX-7 base model with 105,000 on the clock. It was in great shape minus the Arizona sun faded paint and the infamous 3800 hesitation. I was scared by the misconception that rotaries were unreliable and hard to work on. After many months of tinkering I was able to take this gem of car and turn it in to a multicolored, 140hp, "drift" car. I fell in love with the FC's and rotaries.

Fast forward to present day. After a lot trial and mostly error I came up with my current build. SR20DET. It just so happened that a buddy had built an impeccable sr for his 240 but then life happened, so I picked it up for a deal and decided "Why not build my dream car?" So here it is, my build thread. Bring on the haters.

I'm bored at work and have about an hour before I can to the shop and drool on my car. So to pass the time here are some pictures of the motor and manifold setup. My buddy Clayton originally built this manifold from scratch for a 240 but it tucks everything nice and close to the engine so I think it will work great with my setup. I will be running the Garret GTX3076 twin scroll turbo setup.

The manifold being built. It has different length runners so it should make a pretty cool sound.

I think I'm gonna stick with the bare metal look.

All bolted up.

So preeeeeetty.

That's it for now. Will have some more pics tonight. Cage should be about done!

CA18DET!

Didn't see that one coming, did ya? :awesome:

Do yo thing, it's your car. No hate from me if it's done right.

It would have to be a KA24 to be a dash of 240. You have a dash of 180.

Thanks man!

Well, I bought wheels. Paid double what I originally bought the car for.... I'm going to keep them hush until the car is done but the specs for the rear are 18x12 -33. Hopefully o can get away with some 50mm overs in the rear and keep stock metal up front. I have a rep gp sports kit for it but that could change, not to sure yet. The BN kits are cool on some cars just not really my cup of tea. The game plan for now is to finish the cage, pull the motor, front metal work, fit the Sr and fab up mounts for it, move all the oil junk so it will fit with the stock subframe (I.e. Oil pickup), fab a 5-6qt oil pan, bash bars front and rear with Jack points, paint, painless wiring kit, dash, then put everything back in the car. My wallet hates me. This isn't going to be a 10 year build either. We are shooting for thanksgiving-Christmas time frame. Anyways I'm done rambling for the day. No pics today due to work. I'll update it is they come!

Yeah man that's what I'm hoping for. Look up some team burst videos. That's where the idea came from so it should sound similar.

The shop dog, Turbo, killing a rag. 10 points for anyone that can name the motor in that subie!

We did a lot of research on other cages and it was hard to find one that wasn't all janky or cluttered. This is what we came up with. A few finishing touches on the cage then the motor comes out! Stay tuned.

Wtf you are swap a mazda rx7 with an 240sx engine ? . in my eyes you are destroing the whole meaning with rx7 , but that is my meaning . i'm just say a rx7 without a 13b , 20b 26b or 6b aren't a rx7. but you'r car would for sure turn out good ! good luck !

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I would have said the same thing a few months ago. I built a s5 motor and after many months of research I decided that making a 500hp rotary motor in my garage and having it run reliably for a couple of seasons was a little more than I could handle. Not to say it can't be done but when this opportunity presented itself I had to jump on it.

Anyways, cage is done!

Edit: Looks like it could be either a nissan or toyota motor. Sitting side ways, exhaust on driver side... hmmmmmmm

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's an SR20DET.

..and the BLUE one is a 240.

you'll find out that building most any engine with a reliable 500whp isn't as easy as it sounds when it lives on the track.

even the guys that build nissans down the way in my complex for drift have a difficult time keeping them together for even a single day.

coxxoc 09-09-13 07:12 PM

Good luck with the project. A sr20 swap isn't a bad thing if that is what you are familiar with. The sr isn't really more reliable at those power levels nor does it have higher potential than a rotary.

A fc with 500 whp will break drivetrain components though. The sweet spot is around 400 whp. It will be quick and won't eat axles, differentials, and mounts as much.

Be realistic about how much you are willing to or can afford to refurbish the setup. You can ignore haters, but please listen to advice. Your wallet will be happier in the long run.

Very unique build! I will definitely be watching to see the overall product, nice job man
