My 1990 RX7 GTU Build

I just picked up a 1990 GTU. I picked it up for a 500 bucks and it only has a 114000 miles on it. My friend and I are going to do a complete restoration and put it back to its original glory. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...8b2eebee74.jpg

I always wanted a non sun roof FC. My last one had a sunroofvabd the motor stuck open once. Was really annoying closing it by hand. I like the look of the headliner on the non sunroof more.

the car is white on blue, my first fc was as well. It was a s4 so this will be my first S5 restoration.

I want to do a clean build and have it still look original however I'm thinking about putting shine auto parts on it, I really like the look of another build here in Washington. This car is my inspiration. If anybody knows of any OEM parts dealers that have good deals on new old stock I would love the links!https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...5b18a994de.jpg

I believe the GTUS is the only S5 that came without a sunroof.

My friend helped me trailer at home today!!! It is now sitting in his shop and I started work stripping the interior out and getting everything ready to be cleaned and put back together with new factory plastic!

I ended up paying $400 for it. I got a nice set of Tein front coils for free with it. However after getting it here and taking it all apart I noticed it had no main wiring harness. Asked him and he said it was supposed to be in there but got lifted. Bummer. I'll be looking for another GTU parts car now.

I got a parts car! Through a couple of friends with fc's I landed a 1990 gtu parts car! Black on black, 230k milage. Field car. Moldy and left for dead, seems to have been hit in the front. However it has the chassis harness I need! Got it trailed to the shop the gtu is at and started tearing it down! I got the interior out and with the help of my friends the engine. I'll open up the motor in a little while. The thunderstorms are gone and it's just smoke and heat right now. I restored the seats and carpet yesterday in 100 degree heat and will never do that again!https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...1dedb7967e.jpg

The seats turned out great. The carpet is fantastic! The black dash was cracked and bubbling so it was tossed. I'll be sticking with my blue interior and will probably donate them to my friends build. However it was good practice before doing my seats and carpets. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...1e8e7db57b.jpg

Well it turns out it is a very rare GTUS model. It has rear vented brakes, no sunroof, the correct rims and the vin just came up was a gtus. The sticker on the fender is nearly sun bleached off so I never looked hard to see what it said. So I will be starting up a new thread, properly named and be putting all of my focus into this car being restored correctly!

A $400 GTUs is a steal. Welcome to the GTUs club. FYI those seats are incorrect.

Is it a "K" or "L" VIN?

Restored Rotary 08-04-18 09:17 AM

K! New build thread coming soon. Prioritizing to make this my number one goal!

Restored Rotary 08-05-18 11:56 AM

Oh those seats are just gtu seats from the parts car, it has all the correct t parts, 160mph cluster, leather wrapped wheel and shifter, seats same cloth and color as door panels. Lots of boxes to go through. Work is long this week but I should have time today to get to it!

NCross 08-06-18 04:04 PM

Does it have an X through it with the K above on the firewall?I have one of the non-restamped L vins that is rumored to be less than 100 for 1990.

Jager 08-06-18 04:04 PM

That'd be cool if you had a GTUs! The only GTUs part I have is the rear end.
