Meet Kukiko!

A week ago to the day I picked up my first rx7! A childhood dream car of mine. It is an 89 Gtu. It is my favorite colors of white with blue interior. The body has 177k, the engine I am not certain on. It already has a racing beat header, braided oil cooler lines, braided brake lines and 4 piston front / vented rear brakes. I continue to find more and more as I dig deeper into the car. It's in pretty excellent shape in my opinion! Fairly untouched. I'll add more later when I have more time, mostly pics for now!

First step of plans:

Bc racing coilovers, fix the few small things it needs, save for a fresh motor build done by two very special people I know with just a minor street port at most and keep it as reliable as possible! I'm not sure what wheels I am going to choose yet. I'd like to keep it very street friendly but at the same time to where it'll do well on mountain runs / track days. I'm still learning the car so the build thread will defiantly become more interesting I assure you!

Nice looking car.

Enjoyed checking this thing out in person. Very clean car. Can't wait to get mine back together so we can ride!

Thanks everyone!

So today we put it on a lift to further investigate. It does already have a lsd, it is a rb header, and an aftermarket mid pipe/ cat. From the cat back it appears to be completely rusty oem. I plan to address this soon with a rb presilencer and not sure the exhaust I want yet. I do plan to completely delete the air pump and ac. I do not mind not having them at all so far soooo why not! Along with the fact I'm averaging 20-23.5 mpg :)

The motor is fairly fresh! We found the reman stamps. Not sure how old but it is still clean enough I'd eat off it. Lol I'm in love with this car. Currently averaging 400-600 miles a week. No real issues as of it! So glad my dream car lived up to the reputation.

Cleaned up!

The Lone Ranger we'll call you now lol

KyleG 05-22-16 08:22 PM

Well done a Tune up! Had to fix a leaky heater hose! Now my outer drivers door handle has broke. Thankfully I watched plenty of Dukes of Hazard as a child ;) Kidding.. kidding.. But, that is the next project.

Fixed the air pump and freed up the aux actuators. Wow the power difference! Actually a fairly quick car for what it is!

KyleG 07-27-16 09:30 PM

Decided to experiment with some exhaust. Gutted cat, 3 inch into a flow master flow pack to 3in out.

Nice deep tone, but i think I'm going to mirror it and do duals.

There is the exhaust, a short clip to 5k rpm. It is a bit noisy!

Since at a car meet a few guys decided to lean all over the car and make black lines all through the paint I'd buff some color back into it. Still haven't done the rear end, roof or front bumper. Buuuut here is the result so far. It helped!

Akaviri 08-02-16 06:20 PM

Looks good. Exhaust sounds mean as hell.
Does the car still have stock suspension? What other modifications are you planning?

KyleG 08-02-16 08:04 PM

Is it still stock suspension. I wish Ohlins were still available but sadly they are not from what I found. I'm not sure what suspension I'll end up going with. Very next is rebuilding the shifter, likely going to use the mazdatrix short throw kit. It is awful currently. I'm still kind of star struck that i am driving my favorite car so I'm still unsure on the build plans. I'm just mostly enjoying the car in this form. I plan in the long run to have a fun street car that is drive able enough for trips or if I felt like taking it to the track that'd be an option as well.

just take care of it man. Done mess it up by putting crap rims on it and lowering it and scraping the crap out of it.

Dont mess up the interior and just keep it nice. Will be great for a long time.

+1 to this.

My first rx7 was a 91 NA white. I put rxt vert rims on it, rsr lowering springs, pineapple racing port sleeve and a few other minor things. I wish I could have kept it! I would post pictures of it but I don't want to take over your thread lol. Keep it up, it looks great so far.:icon_tup:

Thanks guys!

I've considering sleeve inserts, were they worth it? What are the draw backs?

I do believe they are good for 1-2 horsepower, but its not as easy as slapping in a new air filter. You have to take apart the intake manifold to get to them. It really depends on whether you want to labor yourself for a negligible gain. Some argue they aren't safe because they can get sucked into the engine. I don't know about that, though.

My opinion, sleeves are worth installing if you have the engine apart anyway, for rebuild, etc. Otherwise there are probably better things to invest your time.

I'd definitely get the suspension sorted out first. Have you decided on a setup?
