Ignition set up?
 

I completely stripped motor and plan to keep it simple. I will run a carb set up and open exhaust, but dont know what to do with the ignition. Would like to avoid using a distributor because I am limited on space (putting motor in a lotus seven replica). What are my options?

i think this might be the wrong section, but anyway ....

i vaguely recall a member here that used an SDS system to control ignition only on turbocharged Gen I. so you may want to look into SDS. i don't even know if Jacobs still exists any more, but they MAY hold other options for you to investigate, too. that's all i can think of without Googling something. :)

that said, i'm not sure i understand the correlation between needing physical space and not using a distributor. perhaps you can elaborate to better help others help you. it just seems like you're painting yourself into a corner with a distributor-less carb setup.

finally, even if you find something to run just the ignition, i can't see why it would be awfully more painfully to use the carbie as a throttle body and run some kind of fuel injection. just a thought ....

I was afraid that the additional height of the distributor cap on that side of the motor would be a problem, but after measuring and with a dry sump oil pan (which will be cut out tomorrow) there will be plenty of room. I wouldnt know where to begin with fuel injection. I know nothing about controllers or where to start with tuning and Im under the impression that a manifold and a carb will be much cheaper and perform at close to the same level. Please correct me if im wrong and point me in the correct direction if im completely off course. :-)

well, now that you've confirmed that you can use the distributor, the fuel injection argument is moot.

i was just thinking if you were going to have to go through the trouble of wiring up a computer and then tuning the ignition, then you could have simply just included fuel in the mix. i expressed my thoughts on EFI versus carburetion in your other thread and i don't want to come off as beating you over the head with my philosophies. at the end of the day, you have to do what YOU feel comfortable with in order to enjoy life with the car.
