Nice surprisingly this is really similar to what I'm wanting to build w/ my 4 lug 87; S5 engine/ecu, totally gutted, etc.

wow, look at that mess of wires! Hard to tell from the pics, are those tubs just the top? are you going to go back and seal off the fenderwell area from the engine bay?
I have side plates on the tubs but they are only tacked in place now. This winter I'm going to cut the front off and tube it and fully weld everything in.
just by cutting out those plates in the engine bay near the wheels you were able to gain more degrees of turning?? i thought you might have installed aftermarket control arms and extended inner tie rods...
I already have modded knockels and outer tie rods from Abercrombie motor sports. The only thing I'm missing is the rack spacers and cut the frame out so I can use the full 72° the kit is designed for. And as far as I know no one makes control arms for the fc. But in a nut shell you are right. The tubs are just to make room for the angles you get after moding every thing.

Got the motor all ready to pull out. Got the radiator and the oil cooler out and the exhaust removed. Just gotta get an engine hoist.

Pulled this hunk of junk exhaust from the car. Easily 60lbs. And sounded like poo.
