Help with my RX-7?

Hey guys! My name is travis and I just recently picked up an 88 N/A RX-7. I want to get more power into her and I was looking at turbo setups, I知 new to cars and I was wondering what I would need to get a turbo into my 13b. I know I値l need an intercooler setup, turbo manifold and turbo, but what other parts do you guys recommend. The motor was just rebuilt with new seals from angel motorsports about 750 miles ago. I知 looking to do the install myself and I wanna stay around $3k or so less is better seeing how i only spent 3 on the car. Thanks guys!

Welcome to the forum

This question comes up pretty frequently, and the answer depends on exactly what you are looking to do. There are no off-the-shelf turbo kits for Rx7s anymore (and the ones that were made are very rare), and the stock TII turbo and manifold don't fit on the NA engine because they interfere with the intake manifolds. At a minimum, you need:

TII Turbo and manifold, and intake manifolds (port matched to match the NA engine) + throttle body + fuel rails OR
TII Turbo and manifold, spacer to space out turbo manifold from engine, plus a custom downpipe, and relocation of the wastegate actuator to clear the frame OR
Turbo of your choosing and custom made turbo manifold to space turbo out in front, plus a custom downpipe


And:
Wastegate (if turbo does not have internal wastegate)
Blow-off valve
Fuel injectors
Fuel pump
Intercooler and piping
Oil / Coolant lines
Standalone ECU (don't gamble trying to bandaid the stock ECU)
Exhaust solution (possibly custom / partially custom)

Also consider that the stock NA clutch and transmission aren't super strong, so you'll end up wanting the TII parts sooner rather than later. Also consider that you need the TII flywheel (or aftermarket + appropriate counterweight), TII starter, TII slave cylinder, and custom driveshaft (needs TII length shaft w/ rear flange from NA shaft). My understanding is the NA diff is strong enough to last awhile with a turbo, but eventually that will also be a bottleneck.

All in all, it's a pretty tall order. But it's something that has been done before.

Aaroncake's project is documented here, and it's probably the most thorough documentation of the process that you'll find.

You should definitely make sure to do tons of research before you buy any parts, since there are a few different ways to go about it like I mentioned above.

Looking at your budget, have you considered a N/A alternative?
Whilst I'm from Australia I'm sure there are more offerings around Toronto to do something similar to https://www.efihardware.com/products...t-tapered-bore
Basically very short intake runners, dual throttle, more injectors, add high flow exhaust system and after market EMS. If you search this forum, guys get very high HP from an N/A setup once they get the engine to breath. A lot easier than a Turbo conversion. If you want a Turbo solution, my personal suggestion is that you buy a Turbo Rx7 at the right price and expect to rebuild the engine. Have fun tweaking what is already there.

I'm planning on using EFI Hardware setup or similar setup for my existing S4/5 Turbo engine and use the space freed up above the engine for a water to air intercooler as that won't require me to remove the power steering or anything else.

I'm just waiting for the lottery ticket to win, cause $3k US or Au won't do it. I'm already at $5k AU on my parts list.
