Direct injection no, variable intake maybe but probably also no, the intake manifold I made is a bit on the longer side, so power will taper off a bit at really high rpm's, which isn't such a bad thing for reliability, so I might leave it like this even though more horsepower can be made with a shorter intake or a variable one.

I'm using a 4-channel ecu which get's a signal through a CAS which is looking at a 36-1 triggerwheel. The ecu will drive 8 coil-on-plugs, so each channel drives 2 plugs, so no split-timing.

Yeah haha! I assembled the engine last friday night, and by the time I was done it was like 2:30 o clock at night, so I was much too tired to type a story to go with the pics, so I just threw some pictures on here and went to sleep

No I'm not, just the peripheral ports. All the side-ports are filled with defcon, but not the entire intake runner in the iron is filled, just the last inch, so I blocked the outside of the ports by tig-welding a blocking plate in there. This was needed for the center and outer irons, they are FD irons that have ports that sit higher. The intermediate irons did not need blocking plates, their ports sit lower so it will be covered by the slide-throttlebody housing, You'll see.

You got me , it does make lovely whoosh sounds, but since it's a 4-rotor it's almost like a constant whooooooooooosh noise , Must try to avoid doing it though, or this engine will need a rebuild before it's even in the car

Just seen the updates.. Great work John.. You must be very please.. I am sure there are a few hurdles to get over still but looking very good so far. But I think you have crossed the worst!

Congrats John. Great work. It would be nice to see you or someone with skills at your level tackle a new more robust coolant seal design for these engines. If someone could come up with a foolproof design it would be one more failure point eliminated.

Again, excellent job!!! Cant' wait to hear it RUN!

I was actually thinking about that my self, if somebody wants to look into a "Bare Soft Drawn Copper Solid Single Wire" with the right diameter with some crush capability. Now that would be the last of coolant leaks on track days.
The only issue I see is how you reliably join the two copper end pieces.



Any feedback is appreciated.

Doesn't work.
Copper has amnesia.
You need to use a material which is flexible to compensate the "movement" due to temperature fluctuations.

Well, It's often not the seal itself that fails, but the surrounding seal groove / iron / rotor housing. And a coolant seal fail seldom fails on it's own, it's often caused by something external like overheating, overboosting or detonation.

Thanks!, I kind of lost track of an accurate figure a while ago, but it's not that bad. But my build does not resemblence your average 4-rotor build (Not sure if there is such a thing but you know what I mean), I did everything myself except for grinding and balancing the e-shaft, and most of the materials used to build this car are either used materials, or leftovers from other projects. There are some things you just have to buy though, like rotor seals, bearings, ecu stuff, wideband, radiator core, oil coolers ect. so it's never going to be cheap to build something like this no matter how much you can do yourself, but so far I think I'm doing ok.

No way, I don't often use the "Mazda spend a lot of time and money in developing this, so it can't be made better" line, but I think in this case it's kinda true. If it really was that easy it would have been done already.

Yeah, me too! Sadly nothing has been done to the engine this week though, I messed up the pilot bearing seal and decided in a clear moment that I really should not re-use an oil pump chain in a 4-rotor engine, so I ordered those, but since part availability sucks here it's going to take over a week for them to get here. So in the meanwhile I've been doing a little chassis work, mounted the roof, rear bumper, assembled and mounted the headlights, currently respraying the rear window which looked ok without a respray at first but not so ok when mounted onto fresh bodywork. Also worked on my e30 beemer mule, it failed it's tech inspection horribly because the inspector thought it was a death trap. He was very right of course. So pretty boring stuff at the moment, I'll try to get a few pictures up next week.
