1988 Rx7 vert "Slowly bringing her back"

I purchased a rx7 vert for It was owned by a travelling salesman. It died on him at 156K so he got it towed to the nearest junkyard and left it I bought it 5 months later, the owner of the junk yard was completely lost on the car and said that he would take 700 for it but I got him down to 500  The only problem is that the junkyard guy tried to repair it by basically taking all the parts off the engine??? and Ive notice that there are some parts missing (MAF, Fuel pump from what i noticed so far) but it looks pretty great for a great summer project! I will have more pics for this in the morning so stay posted cause im going to need alot of help on my first project!

New engine with tranny only has 50K and a turbo II hood picked up for 350$ from a awesome dude and it also came with Polyurethane mounts :D (wondering if I should install them) But the hood does need alot of work but for 50 bucks you can't beat it

beefhole 06-14-13 06:54 PM

You should leave the stock hood on as it's already aluminum. :)
Be ready for a SLOW car. That's a whopping 142HP motor and a 3000lb convertible :D

But good on you for saving it from the crusher. Looks like it's in good shape. Give it a nice light compounding and waxing.

Solder_Bomb 06-15-13 12:34 AM

Thanks Im going to try to wax her up as soon as i get it moving and the turbo II hood is aluminium too :D but im most likely going to use it just to try my hand on body work

Nice pickup. Always had a soft spot for verts.

Does anybody know where i can find a write up or something on how to remove my engine?

victomaru 06-17-13 01:36 PM

you can download the service manuals from here and this is what i used to take my engine out.
Foxed.ca - Mazda RX-7 Manuals
when i removed my engine it took me about 4-6 hours to take it out. that includes me taking off all of the wiring harnesses, cooling, engine accessories, oil lines, and transmission. also i didnt have a engine hoist so me and my dad picked the engine out of the bay by hand its actually easy as hell to remove the engine the one thing you might have a bitch of a time getting off is the AC pump and the transmission and oil cooling lines.

have fun! the vert is actually my favorite Rx7, its just the nicest to drive

Solder_Bomb 06-21-13 01:52 AM

im having trouble removing the exhaust... this is going to be a long project

victomaru 06-21-13 08:56 AM

Yeah those nuts are always rusted to hell on the heat shield and manifold, lol mines actually unscrewed the studs in the engine but use a whole lot of pb blaster or some other penetrating oil and a hammer. It might be easier to just unbolt the manifold from the down pipe and pull the engine with it still attached

Solder_Bomb 06-21-13 11:13 AM

Nahh I got the bolts loose and the exhaust detached from the manifold and all the bolts holding it up in the front and midway but there seems to be no bolts in tge rear of the car just those bungee things and they are real tight so I can't drop the exhaust I tried to move it but I don't want to break the exhaust cause it looks rusted to hell

Ok I found the bolts at the top to remove on my rusty exhaust so that the whole exhaust drops but they are a bitch to reach!

Nicely done. Any progress is good progress.

Nice Man!

Good find on you vert :icon_tup:. Awesomescre on you engine/transmission and hood .

If you have the time and some money saved, or plan on saving money for your build. Scrap your stock exhaust system and go with a full Racing Beat Exhaust System.

Check out the clutch kit while the transmission and engine is out, and replace the clutch kit f needed.

Buy a Hanes Manual for your FC you will need it or your build and for future repairs. Keep us posted, on you build.

DeathAngel13 06-23-13 11:08 AM

nice vert, good luck on your build

*update* I got some problems that I noticed after pulling the engine out one I noticed that the guy snapped one if the fuel lines but the thing going across the firewall I don't know what it is

Attachment 502732

victomaru 06-28-13 09:06 AM

I looked at some pics of my engine bay and i think that broken line on the firewall goes into the charcoal canister so it might be a rigged emissions delete.

Edit: it definitely goes to the charcoal canister

polito Racing 06-28-13 09:41 AM

if you are talking about the line on the pic above, that is not a fuel line that is an Oil cooler line. the one that goes to the front of the engine. Good luck with your vert, Im in the process of fixing mine as we speak!!
