1988 10AE Convertible Build

I am putting together a 10AE Convertible for Dave Meditz (rotarydude) here at RX-Pectations, so I figured I would do a build thread.

The donor car is of course a 1988 10AE Turbo II

The recipient car is a 1988 Convertible, white with black interior. (the most ideal recipient!)

All 10AE specific items are going to the Convertible including the following:
  • Turbo Engine, ECU, Harness, and components
  • Turbo Tranny and Driveshaft
  • Turbo Rearend, Axles, and Hubs
  • 10AE Aluminum Diffuser
  • Turbo Cluster
  • 10AE/Canadian Headlight Switch (for headlight washer button)
  • Headlight washers and reservoir
  • 10AE Horn button
  • 10AE Momo shift knob (NOS)
  • 10AE Badging
  • Glass breakage sensors, harness and Ultrasonic CPU (not sure how I am going to mount the sensors yet since the coupe and convertable are way different for the mounting locations.)
  • 10AE Wheels
  • Door panels
  • 10AE Floor Mats (NOS)
  • Lock set with keys (NOS)
  • Front and Rear Bumper Covers
  • Side Moulding

I am building this as I would think that Mazda would have had they produced a vert version of the 10AE. So with that in mind, the following stock vert items will be revised:
  • Stock vert taillights painted white
  • Custom white vert top and targa
  • Vert seats will be retained, except they will be done in leather like that in the Coupe, instead of the porforated leather that comes on the vert seats
  • The bronze windshield is busted, and we cant use the coupe door glass, so we will be tinting the windows with bronze tint.

Aftermarket items going on the car are:

Racing Beat Rev II complete exhaust
Racing Beat Front and Rear Sway Bars
Racing Beat FCD
KYB AGX Shocks

Pictures coming soon........

Here is the donor 10AE after I started stripping. I had a pic of it sitting out in the FC yard still complete, but I cannot find it.

Here is the Vert it is going in. Already have the front bumper and a few of the moulding peices on it.

I will be installing all the Turbo parts and 10AE parts and getting it running, then Dave will take it over and tear everything down and do a repaint and restoration of all the peices.

absolutely awesome! Im subscribing to this thread for sure, I have also been wanting to do this to match my 10AE. maybe one day!

What is the 10AE aluminum diffuser you speak of?

Landon303 01-27-13 06:56 AM

Awesome!!!

Said diffuser.

If you're doing that exhaust, I'd DEFINITELY port that waste gate, And be sure to not paint the vertical ribs of the tail lights, to keep it "true to mazda". But you guys I'm SURE already know this :)

Keep the pictures coming!!!

Wild Bill Massey 01-27-13 03:58 PM

Yep, thats the one.

Alex B 01-29-13 10:24 PM

custom white convertible top sounds interesting.

robx7fcna 01-29-13 11:22 PM

Where does that diffuser go? I never knew about this diffuser being unique to the 10AE, weird.

Wild Bill Massey 01-30-13 11:09 AM

The aluminum one goes under the engine and bolts onto the subframe. It is in addition to the regular plastic one.

Landon303 01-30-13 11:35 AM

I want to see how the diffuser bolts on w/ the vert subframe add-on

I tried a few days ago and found that it will not bolt on with the vert subframe. Havn't made my mind up if I want to leave it off or hack it up to make it fit.

Ah, I see, thanks for the explanation.

Come to think of it, I remember removing that years ago when I put my built motor, I pulled it off and never put it back on. I thought my other fcs had it as well but I bet I mistook it for the plastic one.

Great work so far!

ein1 02-01-13 09:31 PM

excellent work so far would love to see this completed.

Wild Bill Massey 02-06-13 11:25 AM

Been working on getting the engine to fire, it finally did. Starting on interior and will have some updated pics soon.

Wow!! Now that's a build! I like how you made a new and improved version of Mazda should have made, produced and sold in the states. Awesome job!

Just a little project I have had on my list for a few years. Hard to do when Uncle Sam won't keep me in Texas lucky that I have some good friends that like to work on things
