This will be the start to my build thread. The build is going to be a track only drift car. Started with a 83 BMW shell for 500 bucks very little rust which is rare for this car.
Attachment 658424

First thing I did was weld the sun roof shut and bondoed it smooth

Attachment 658425

Then I started with roll cage fabrication. The cage is built to rally standards as I wanted to be super safe.

Then I fabbed up an aluminum dash mounted my quick release wheel and rhino lined the floor

Attachment 658420

Attachment 658421

I also got rid of the stupidly huge BMW diving board bumper and custom fit a 2003 525 I believe bumper

Attachment 658422

Also started my switch board to be mounted in the dash

Next I bought a used 89 turbo block and trans and a bunch of other goodies from some guy that was down on his luck and started the rebuild all new seals oil regulator mod and also a bridgeport.

After.

Next I had to rework the drive shaft tunnel to stuff the motor into the car

Attachment 658409

Attachment 658410

Then mounted the stage 4 spec pressure plate and 6 puck clutch onto my resurfaced flywheel the mounted the trans painted the engine bay and mounted her in with my custom engine mounts

And that bring it up to speed where I am now BTW that was like 6 months of time. But anyway I got my Borg warner s300 turbo with a divided t4 flange.

Attachment 658404

I made the divided collector and flange for it

Attachment 658405

Attachment 658406

And the start of the manifold I cut out the flange and welded on two inch and a half long stubs it will be 2 inch diameter sch. 5 pipe with dual waste gates

Attachment 658407

OK enough of the start to this thread...so the next thing I got going is fabbing up the manifold all I'm waiting on is a hand to help me decide on the exact location I want the turbo if only I had an extra arm.

beefhole 10-17-13 06:20 PM

Fierce!
That car doesn't look like it weighs much!

danmo349 10-17-13 06:32 PM

IDK the exact weight yet but I do know I came home to my garage one night before the cage was in and my friends picked it up and put it on its side I was pissed but at least they put cardboard down haha.

Molotovman 10-17-13 06:52 PM

This is pretty cool! How long have you been into rotaries?

danmo349 10-17-13 07:50 PM

Bout a year ago I bought an rx8 that was my first always had an interest though.

Furb 10-18-13 01:08 AM

Cool project!

But this is the ugliest 2nd gen I've ever seen.. ow wait.. thank god... It's only posted in the wrong section ;)

danmo349 10-18-13 09:39 AM

O shit I'm just so used to be in the 2nd gen section and the motor is I just didn't even think about it. Where should I have posted it?

Furb 10-18-13 09:48 AM

Oldskool and other rotary ;)

So today I started to fab up the turbo manifold

Attachment 658359

Attachment 658360

Attachment 658361

Two things I have to address yet is I still have to port match my collector and turbo also I think I have to remove the exhaust manifold studs and go with bolts due to space limitations o and I have to fit two Watergate's yet.

clokker 10-19-13 11:42 PM

Well, this is fun.

I'm struck by how clean the engine bay is, there don't seem to be a lot of holes, brackets, etc.
Did you fix that or are BMWs that smooth from the factory?

danmo349 10-19-13 11:51 PM

I cut all the old brackets out and filled most of the holes. I tried to clean it up a lot but since its main purpose is function and I have a deadline I didn't spend much time on it.

So next rx7 radiator would not fit in the BMW rad support so I figured it would be a god time to tube out the front and set up my v mount. Here are some pictures.

Some serious fab skills here! Love the work so far and am excited to see more.

crowntuning 12-01-13 03:44 PM

This is awesome. Love the build man, work looks great to.

danmo349 12-01-13 04:02 PM

Thanks the reassuring comments mean a lot to me I know a lot of guys on here are probably frowning on the fact that its in a bmw. But I wanted to stick out from the rest on the track.

So today I finished up the t4 manifold had to hole saw each runner and weld the vband wastegate flanges to it as well as heat wrap it.

ryan2949 01-07-14 11:23 PM

Ugh, I wish I could do custom work like this. I've always wanted to make my own headers/exhaust/intakes.

Felix Wankel sounds german enough to me...if anything you have brought the design full circle. Great project! looking fwd to hearing it start up.

danmo349 01-08-14 11:34 AM

Haha bringing it full circle. And being able to fabricate really comes in handy and saves money.
