where do i start
 

my 7 has been sitting for quite a while, inspection sticker is from 05

she ran about 2 months ago, i wasnt going to start it because the fuel is prob bad
but i couldnt help myself. she started right up, ran real smooth but didnt run without my help. carb need to be cleaned out.
stats:79 gs New york car never been in a garage
atkins 12a with about 3,000 miles on it , no rats nest
ele.ingnition
holly 600( i know its too big)
rb intake
pace setter headers high flow cat rb exhaust
lsd rear end, with disks
dropped 1.5
suspention tec. front and rear sway bars
probably a few more things that i cant remember right now.
I want to take her apart and clean,scrape and look to see how much rust she has.
i do not want to take out the 12a.
Where do i start, my thinking is to drop the tank and work my way up to the front
i dont have alot of time to work on her per day,so a complete tear down cant be done. everything will have to stay outside.
any possible areas to look out for real damage from rust ect.
i just want to make sure it worth doing and im not cleaning up a parts car.
BTW chipmunks have been living in there for a few yrs smells like piss.

What are you gonna do about the rust?

Gotta do something when you find it, or else scraping it will just expose the metal to MORE O2 :O

Use the finger poke... It's what I do. Just poke the existing paint/undercoat for bubbly areas. Its the most Non-invasive manuver.


Do you own a MIG? With most cases of fighting the rust monster its eazyer to get a MIG and take a class in sheetmetal welding. Than to earn enough money to pay someone else to do it.

i was thinking if there is alot of rust or rust in a certain spot that would cause the car to be
worthless, then i'll find another and transplant what i got to the next one.
lets say i find rust on the frame, is that a nonrepairable spot?
the exterior is nice just small nickle size surface rust nothing thru and thru. im more worried about hidden rust
ill take a few pics of what i find and let you guys let me know what you think.

My experience with rust on older vehicals... If you see some; there is always a lot more hidding from you.

Rust on suport parts of the unibody... That can be fixed with a 2X4 and a ratchet strap. :lol: JK JK but I have seen it done. o.O

Just look for the rust on parts of the car where the suspension attaches to the frame. If its sturdy (with unavoidable surface corrosion) Sand and POR-15 it. and be happy while it lasts. ;-)

these cars are really simple, but if you want to make it even easier, starting at the back and working forwards is actually a good idea.

by the time you get to the front, you'll think, gee there really is only 6 bolts holding the engine/trans in the car....
