Snow Rabbit - FB Rallycross Build

I've recently just made another poor financial decision and acquired another FB, but this time it's something pretty special.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...e18e665423.jpg

The car is a full SCCA E prod car, featuring a well built cage, street/extend ported 12a with a weber, and plenty of suspension goodies. After seeing videos from friends of the Ice Racer FC at the Lake Superior Performance Rally, and having an extra 13b 6 port street port I am building in more dorm room, it became clear I needed a chassis to build up into a competitive Rallycross car. The car structurally and mechanically is in great condition, however, I was able to get it at an extremely affordable price due to 1, the title being missing and 2, the car not running due to one of the 2 carter fuel pumps being burnt out (wired in series). My main goal is to compete in the soon to be re-opened Lake Superior SCCA rallycross with some friends, but to do that there's a couple things I will need to do.

To-do list to get the car back on the road

-Get the 12a running (new fuel pump already installed, just need to replace the starter)

-Get a title, possibly going through Michigan or be lazy and go through Vermont

-New tires, possibly swap the wheels around as I don't want to beat up the panasports

-Wiring, looks like a lot of people have had their hands in the wiring and it was not done to high standards

To-do to get the car competition ready

-Undercoat/oil spray the car to prevent rust

-Raise suspension

-Lots of small things

Nice To-do

-Finish 13b build

-Swap in my 13b streetport, sell the 12a to recoup some money and fund more of the build

-Paint interior/cage

-EFI?

I hope to keep this thread posted, I will be back and forth from college, but will have some decent blocks of time to get some work done on it.

How the hell can you afford a race car in collage? And where do you store a car like that while going to school. I must have done it wrong, I was the cool kid in school because I had a POS car and drive my friends around. Haha

I’m always searching marketplace looking for a good deal, this car was only 2k, which i think was a steal with all the parts on this car, the t3 coilovers, springs and shocks only pretty much cover that price. My other car is the POS, which I supercharged in high school with an eaton m90. I worked for most of my time in high school as a machinist, so the pay was pretty good

I store the car at my Mom’s house, which I am very glad I can do. She seems to have just accepted at this point I’ll always have some projects kicking around.

I kind of love everything about this. The (3rd?) roommate is an engine, dude has access to a machine shop, car empire spread over many locations.

I'm assuming there are also some classes to attend :)

Fantastic!

Welp, my blind hope for the 12a has failed me. Car wasn’t starting with the fuel pump fix and the starter, so I dove into some tuning and got the car to sputter about 1 in every 3 cranks. This wasn’t a great sign to me, so I compression tested it (should’ve before I bought it but the starter didn’t work) and with cranking a bit slower than normal, the reading for the front was 30,30,60, and the rear 15,15,30. Even with a slow crank and it being cold, the inconsistency and difference front to rear is disheartening. I’ll be pulling the engine hopefully this week over thanksgiving break, and maybe have the 13b ready to drop in by Christmas? I somewhat expected this, and a part of me is happy I get to put in the 13b now

Sound like a build to follow. Congrats. You probably just saved time, as you’d probably put the 13b in sooner than later.

At least you didn’t spend to much money. I hope you can get the car up and running soon.

Got the car in the garage! My mom ain’t too happy about another POS in the garage, but hopefully I can get it out and driving somewhat soon. Heading up to college now, so next work will be on the engine.

Broken bolt?

If you don't have access to welding equipment, you can most probably drop the front iron off at a local specialty shop. Just ask them to weld a nut on to the end of the broken bolt .. and you should be back in business.

I got the bolt out due to the help of a local Rx7 owner with a welder, and I spent the weekend building the engine and finally putting it together last night. This was my first engine build, so the was a lot of assembly and disassembly, and those damn apex seal corners kept popping out when I was trying to put on the center iron. I'll post some more pictures of the completed engine later today, but now I've got finals to study for that I ignored over the weekend.

The engine was a bit siezed and I was really worried about it, then I realized I hadn’t righted down either of the stationary gears. With a bit of knocking the eshaft forward and back after seating the stationary gears, I was able to get the engine spinning and making all the right noises. I also mocked up half my CBR 1000rr throttle body intake, which I’m still debating on if I run it on the car. I clearanced all the side seals a bit on the looser side of the tolerance for the possibility of running boost, but I’m not sure yet. I think I’ll see how this engine performs NA, and if it’s not enough, it should be a good platform to throw light boost at and have a happy engine
