SA build in North Dakota.

79 RX7 with a later FB 12A swapped 4 speed, some odd Orange color with brown hood. It has some rust on the rear quarter panels hopefully I'll be able to fix that soon. And it's in need of a new dash.

Had to tow it home because it had bad brakes and really bad tires.

Started working on bleeding the brakes only to find out, it needed a new master cylinder.

Nice find, congratulations!! Those plaid seats are rare from what I understand. There are others on here that know more about that than I do, but I do know that they are rare. I may have missed it, but how long has it been since its ran? Do you know any history on it?

Jesse/ 01-28-17 06:36 AM

Thank you! I didn't know they are rare, it runs great I last had it started sometime in December. I don't know too much about it's history and oh it does have a back seat too lol.

I got some new headlights for it just the other day

You have a sonic bronze color car, quite a few of these had the red plaid seats. They are somewhat rare because the plaid was used in only 3 of the 5 first year exterior colors here in the US. Plus, they only put them in a percentage of vehicles. The bronze cars could also be had with solid red/orange seats. Silver and blue cars could be had with either black or a white plaid seats.

Plus, Mazda transitioned away from the plaid to velour inserts in that first year. Cars built later in the production run (Jan 79 and later) were mostly coming to the US with "red dot" seats as the basic trim level and velour inserts as a little nicer option. Looks like yours is an S model.

Thank you! I really didn't know about the 3 of the 5 had this option! I know it doesn't have a sun roof and it doesn't have the rear anti-swaybar, but it does have one of the smallest back seats I've ever seen in my life. How can I tell if I a S model?

The lack of a rear sway bar, and the center console coupled with the 4 speed manual transmission tell you its an S model. It more than likely came with steel wheels as well. Odd that the original selling dealer didn't even add the side moldings.

The car was definitely Sonic Bronze Metallic originally. And DO NOT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD cut that black radio surround to add an aftermarket stereo. Those are super rare and nowhere ever will you find another uncut radio surround. If you want an aftermarket stereo, find a radio surround that's already been cut and save your original. Heck I'm sure that piece alone is worth half of what you paid for the car, lol. What are your plans for the car? Restoration or modded?

Jesse/ 01-29-17 02:21 PM

Thank you for the help! I don't plan to take out the radio I love the look of it and i don't care if it doesn't work it just looks really bad ass. My plan for it is to restore and mod it. I have a little bit of rut that I need to fix on the rear quarter panels. Then I plan on getting a carbon fiber hood for it. And for wheels I'm probably going to go with diamond racing just because I can't find anything else. Then hopefully I can find a new dash for it and fix up the inside. And I would like to get a weber carb for It.

The new master cylinder showed up today, now I just need some time off.

The window sticker or other original paperwork would indicate if it was an S or GS, but the car itself is not marked. As Dave said, S's didn't include a rear sway bar. To me, it looks like you have a 4 speed shift knob and the short center console, 2 other signs of S equipment. Is your spare a steel wheel? Other S features were a 2 spoke steering wheel, no intermittent wiper setting and no remote elect rear hatch release. S cars didn't come standard with the exterior body trim either.Your car looks like it was built in 78, it has early style dash trim and fan knob.

It is a 4 speed and I do believe that you guys are right about it being a S model. But either way I love this SA and I can't wait to get it done! It's crazy how many little details can give away what model it is!
