Rx7 Rally Car

This is how i picked it up;

1982 Rx7, Group 5 logbooked rally car. Built a few years back by a fellow i know who has moved on to Subaru and open class.

The bits:
12a streetport built by pineapple racing
Weber 48 IDA
Mazdaspeed 4.88 ring and pinion (spares are all 4.78s)
Miata gearset in FC transmission.
Bilsteins
GM alternator
many other smaller items

came with more spares than i know what to do with.

That car seems familiar. Was the old owner on the forums?

In any case, nice score. Should be a lot of fun. I keep promising myself I'll try rally one of these days.

Since then, the engine has died. So it has come time to revamp this car to get at least another year or two out of it.

Engine bay was stitch welded, minor rust repairs made, fenders trimmed for clearing the 15" wheels and flares added. Weight saved here and there. Biggest thing is the 13B engine and the FC subframe. The steering was too slow, so this should help.

i also saved 10lbs via removal of the headlamps. also cleared some space and removed some wiring and relays.

I hate you....Congrats on the purchase. I have contemplated building a FB rally car, and having the team dubbed "The Earbleed Express". G'luck, and LMK if you're coming to Michigan for Sno*Drift or LSPR and need a crewmember.

Looks like the car is coming along. How have you been Alex?

i actually do want to run sno drift eventually, but this year i think i have all my rallies plotted. Biggest thing is just fuel costs and the like. LSPR is a good one too. If im ever out east i will certainly hit you up!

Pretty good, still up in Idaho. Which is subject to change in the coming year. Hows your project been?

My project is going great. I'm almost done mechanically and than it will be paint. I have my thread on here and my blog describing the project.

so the old one has moved on then eh?

I honestly might have to step out of the realm of rotary for the next build, unless i can cage an rx7 to get more space... things are just small! Might go merkur xr4ti or stay mazda with a 3 hatchback.

RX-7 Chris Nov 11, 2011 08:57 AM

you could always go with an older RX or a rotary conversion. I was looking into the posibility of doing a 12A (my old motor) powered '65 Ford Cortina.

My old car has been parted out. I have some parts and the motor left but the stack is shrinking. It would be nice if I could get my motor sold but it seems like people want cheap motors not quality motors. Parts of my car still lives in most the FB's in Colorado and others around the country, over 50 total.

Whizbang Nov 11, 2011 09:07 AM

at least it made a good organ donor instead of soda cans and refrigerators.

Older rotaries are impossible to find parts for cheap enough for me to want to destroy one. Mazda has a great contingency program, so i want to stay Mazda if i can. I might be able to the cage tighter than the current one is and run another rx7, but we shall see.

Whizbang Nov 13, 2011 05:01 AM

actually it was my wife that organized it since im out of the country!

lincolnturns Nov 13, 2011 01:55 PM

Sweet rally goodness. Would love to hear some rotary barking through the woods.

RallyCV Nov 24, 2011 06:50 PM

Good luck with the rebuild, I'm new to FB's but I've built 3 rally cars since I got started if you've got any questions.

I'm be available to co-drive as long as I'm not already in the Datsun that weekend :)

Whizbang Nov 25, 2011 01:11 PM

have you made it out to Idaho before? I recall a 510 (and i think a 210) for 2010 Idaho rally.

I really do hope to get this machine and sorted quick. Since i really do not have much time to do so once i get home. There really isn't too much left to do, just need to make sure i have everything. I also would like a least a little seat time in the thing. I had hours upon hours in the Xr4ti, but the rx7 was much different. this newer somewhat longer wheel base, improve steering and suspension version will be completely different than the limited time i had in it previously.

RallyCV Nov 25, 2011 01:51 PM

We've never run our car out west, if it was a 510 it was either Dan Cook, Dave Coleman, or Brad Fast.

This one's ours.

Looks like you're at the "All there's left to do is everything" stage.

Whizbang Dec 1, 2011 04:46 PM

yea pretty much. Its the little things that kick you around it seems. Thankfully ill have all the of parts, and a fair amount of time on my side

Whizbang Dec 11, 2011 03:09 AM

I believe I can start ordering parts again. First things first, fuel pumps. Two Bosch external pumps spec for a GSLSE will be the ticket. Ill be running them in parallel so if one goes, flip a switch and the other takes over. I was considering a mechanical kit, but i do not see how i can retain power steering. Which is a high priority.

Also, Due to some interesting issues with the FC steering stuff, i need to add length to the column. Thankfully, this is a good time to pop in a 1.5:1 quickener.

RallyCV Dec 12, 2011 11:14 AM

You don't really want power steering in a rally car anyway. It interferes with the feedback you get from the road, and its all too easy to lose your alternator and water pump belts if it gets thrown off.

Whizbang Dec 12, 2011 01:33 PM

the power steering lives on its own belt but there is no way i would go without it. Its just to hard to turn the wheel that fast at lower speeds.
