Painting question
 

1984 GSL-SE cream color

I have a good friend who can paint the car once I have sanded it down. Needs no body work.

If I am not changing the color, do I have to sand down the car to bare metal?
Should the bumpers come off and be painted separately?
Pop up headlights, I probably have to tape off everything I don't want painted even when they are closed...right?

Any other suggestions? I am a bit of a perfectionists so this may take a while. I love this color and don't want to change anything on it.

for sanding you can use a scott pad, brown color you can get then at the bodyshop supply or 400 grit, prime and paint.. if the car don't need body work, and yes anything the u dont want to remove have to be cover they sales plastic or papel..

Thanks. It is the same color as yours. I really like this color. Got my work cut out for me but I like doing it.

Pete has a million videos. Use the search feature to learn in some kind of order.
Epoxy primer, block sanding, body filler, skim coat, base coat, clear coat, setting up the guns, etc.

Don't take sanding past your original paint. It has been proven as the best base you can start on.
If you not changing colors, there is no need to blow the car apart.(take apart)
Use foam or tape like this...I like the foam. Pete uses the foam but shows you a budget way too.

Look through his videos... their crude, loud, fowl language, and sometimes off topic.
But after a while you start to learn and even like Pete.

Seriously. Watch any youtube video you can. Don't rush ANYTHING.

Im a firm believer that prep-work is what makes the paint job.

That guy is funny as HELL! I love watching his stuff. I've watched more than a few of his videos and aside from enjoying his humor, I've actually learned quite a bit.

I just ran across one of his videos the other day and he made me chuckle for sure :lol: Many expletives, wouldn't want to watch it with kids around, but he's pretty hilarious for sure.

I'll be watching some of his videos on painting, as well as many others, before delving into my two painting projects coming up before spring. Should be a fun challenge - I'll try to help everybody else out by posting my findings!

Big help and I appreciate it. I sanded down the engine bay, inner fender well, and underside of a car last summer and I was not changing the color. I began to wonder if I needed to go to bare metal especially with no rust and after I burned out two dremels and one elbow (no I didn't use a dremel to sand down the car, only to clean out dozens of weld dimples). The rest was done by hand or drill with sanding discs or wire wheels. Took months
