Officer, is it really safe for a driver to take photgraphs while operating a motor vehicle at 40+ mph?
|
lol. Shouldnt this thread be in the builds section?
|
it could be there. however, i originally posted it in the non tech section as its kind of a rolling restoration so to speak. and i enjoy sharing other projects with my fellow first gen owners.

How did you get a 944 in such nice condition? Every 944 I've ever seen is junk or barley running.
|
well to be honest it was kind of a rat when i bought it back in may. i've been slowly putting money into it getting it back to its former glory.

it's looking good.
From the pics it looks like if you got a little touchup paint on that car, it would look really good. |
|
nah, i'm actually all caught up on my FB work. the last thing i need to do to my 85 GS is to paint it. so i'm just toying with this until i build a TII powered FB.
|
Very nice car. One of my good friends had one and I wanted it badly. Have fun.
|
Very, very, very cool car. You got me looking around my area for one haha. I found one on CL for $4,500, same color, same year, with 138K on it. Dang do i wish :) Good luck and nice car!!
|
thanks man! i really do enjoy the car! can't take the place of my FB but, its a great car in its own right!

its been awhile since i've updated. had so many things going on. the last thing i did a few nights ago was clay bar the hood, right fender, header panel and headlights and buff and wax them. the paint is shot but this small amount of effort really brought back a shine! i also did the right quarter panel as well. .
Attachment 723155 Attachment 723156 Attachment 723157 |
Clay barring does a lot, I detailed cars 2 summers ago and it really does take off those annoying small circles that are left from dust/water debris.
Hint 1. Keep the paint wet! If you dont it will scratch instead of clean, which you really do not want. Hint 2. Keep it light, dont push. Just let it glide on the water on the surface. Hint 3. Put the time in, learn how to use it properly and it will work wonders for ya :) |
^^^this is spot on!!
|
I use detailing spray rather than water when claybarring. Does wonders, and the car feels like ice when you're done.
|
might have to try that. what spray do you use?
|
Nice Good work. My 944 looks Hmmmm different than yours. lol

I strange thing about compareing the 944 and the fb (both of mine are 84's) is the the 944 electrics (among other things) are anceint seeming compared to the fb.( for early years like ours) I guess this is because of the 944 being based of the much older 924. |

i don't know why this is, but my son Grant is always talking about the Porsche.. he even says "Porshuh" which i find admirable, lol. every time he sees one in a book or on t.v. he goes crazy for it, lol. every night i have to lift the cover and he has to sit in my 944... its like heaven to that kid, lol. i don't mind because he's following in dad's footsteps and he's taking an interest in things other than toy trains and hot wheels, lol. anyone else have kids that flock to their car?
Attachment 723158 Attachment 723159 he's on the horn like he's driving in NYC, lol: Attachment 723160 my daughter Isabelle just relaxes in the back seat. she thinks its comfortable for some strange reason.. Attachment 723161 Attachment 723162 |
I just bought one of these last week.....
http://i40.tinypic.com/2illvs1.jpg Needs a good amount of work, Im starting with the t-belt/ balancer belt and water pump next weekend. |
AWESOME man!! keep us posted with pics! do you know any history on the car?? i like the Fuchs wheels on the car! what year is it??
|
Its an 83 with aprox 130k on it (odmoiter gear is broken) i have the service records on it from new till 95k then they stop. Once the mechaincals are sorted id like to put the newer turbo front end on, and fix up the interior a bit. runs and drives fine, but i still think about the day ill be doing the clutch. looks to be a pain.
When you took the speedo out, it looks like the whole guage unscrews, is that how you did it? The write ups I found have you take the whole cluster out which Id rather not do |
i just reached up under the dash by the headlight switch and pushed the left pod out of the dash. i was then able to push the speedo out and unscrew the speedo cable. you must remove the connector from the back of the tach before removing the speedo. the connector is for the mpg gauge. i have pics if you need.
|
haha put a widebody get on that red fb and you would have the same look

Restoring a Porsche

Your 944 looks really nice - obviously a labor of love. I recently restored a derelict 968 Cabriolet, no engine or transaxle, top needed a new window, and numerous electrical issues. I must say the electrical system is much more complex than it needs to be, and the quality of the connectors is definitely not as good as on the FBs I have worked on.
I don't want to hijack your thread, but I thought you might enjoy seeing what we did with the 968. I had a freshly rebuilt street ported 13b and a 5 speed trans sitting in my shop --- Photos and details are given on page 7 of my Cardomain page. Probably the best handling and definitely the best braking car I have owned, a very nice driver, but of course less power than a stock 968. Just finishing my latest swap - a straight six turbo Skyline motor into an 84 FB GSL - expect to be driving it by the end of this week. I know, I know --- it's a sickness. |
a rotary powered 968! rennlist.com would crucify you.. i however embrace the idea and have to say that its bad to the bone! that had to be some work to get that swap done! the hard part would be the transmission.. did you use an FC trans or custom make a bellhousing and use a the torque tube setup and rear mounted trans that the 968 originally had?
|
Read the fine print
If the web site is working correctly, the address for my Cardomain page should be at the bottom of my post. It gives all the details.

i have been thinking about putting a rotary in my 944. I too would like to hear about the 13b in the 968.
|
You know you spend too much time on this forum when you see a Porsche 944 autocross car go by on a trailer and you think of this car! Nice car, by the way....I used to love the 944's (and 928's).....closest i have even been to owning one was a 914 many moons ago.....lol

She's a beaut, no doubt... and so nice to see one that's not red, black, or white.
|
i love grey cars and the 944 was no exception. i waited months to find one for sale in my price range that was stone grey metallic. i like guards red but there are too many on the road that are guards red. dare to be different. guess that's partially why i have RX-7's
|
Hows yours running? Im pulling the engine out of mine this week....
The rear main is dripping so im replacing that, the clutch, rod bearings, reseal oil pan and the t-belt/ balance belt and water pump. should be fun!:icon_tup: |

Very nice car...anf yet I don't care for FC's...whats that all about???
|
well the FC was produced in 1986 and the design started in 83. the 944 was based off of the 924 and upgraded in the engine and suspension department and widended with the quarter panel flares and the fender flares to produce the look of the 944. the 944's first year was in 1983. makes me think Mazda like the design and used a couple key Porsche features. fine by me because my 88 10th Anniversary RX-7 and my 944 sit side by side in the garage. love them both.

got some work done yesterday! i installed a new seat belt on the driver's side front. now i feel as though i can safely operate the car, lol. the old belt was limp and frayed.
i also installed a new washer pump. i pumped all of the old washer fluid out. it smelled like rotten sea water. i then cleaned out the tank and refilled it with fresh washer fluid. |
