My 1984 RX-7 Project: Blow though

Howdy,

My name is Chris and this is my new project:

More pictures here:
http://s246.photobucket.com/albums/g...cpZZ2QQtppZZ16

It is a 1984 RX-7 GSL model. I picked it up from FDNewbie and brought it home a few weekends ago. So far it just needs a few exterior things here and there and I will be painting it shortly. For my first paint job I'll be picking a grey type color since white may be rough for a novice.

This is my 4th RX7 and my first first generation RX. I've had a big cam LS1-T56 second gen and two turbo II's that ran like shit. I'm moving over to the first gen for it's classic looks, great handling, and affordability.

The car is totally stock other then a Bonez Superflo catalytic converter system, Tokico dampers, Racing Beat springs, Mazdatrix slotted rotors, and carbotech brake pads.

I hope to run in the 13's in the car with a Nikki based blow through setup, which I'll do my best to document in this and various other threads. I always try to cover the little things in my threads. The car handles fantatisic but has play in the steering system so I may replaced the idler arm bushings.

Anyhow, here we go!

looks like a good starting point.

6-6-11 Update

This build is inspired by many on this forum such as Bad 83, DirectFreak, WackyRotary, and various other threads that have made me soon since I was 18. I still have the video of DirectFreak owning up on a 350Z :). So much ass being kicked its unreal.

First things first is that I bought a good condition S5 turbocharger for the build. I'm still going to rebuild it and port the wastegate. Rob @ ********** said that it's more then enough to do the job (200-200 HP) and on my car.

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/g...L/P5050021.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/g...L/P5050020.jpg

Then I ran an order over to ********** for a few parts. Including a carb hat, FPR, fittings, sealed up Nikki, locked dizzy, desmogged intake manifold, and a turbo manifold in the making. Also oil feed/return lines.

Pictures of the exhaust manifold.

I also picked up an Isuzu NPR intercooler off ebay. "Short" style.

Dimensions are: 8.5" x 20 " x 2" with 2.75 outlets. Should support the powergoal nicely. Also a bargain at $100.

Next updates to come soon.

Too much. But it'll clear any manifold/carb setup that I could come out with.

:) Thanks!

I'm contiplating a certain white, but I'm not sure yet. Maybe just a stock match may work out just fine.

FunK73 06-07-11 09:22 PM

I love my dover white FB, but I really want a more pure white to be honest. You better bring that bad boy down to the cities when its all squared away!

Jager 06-08-11 01:07 PM

I sure will.

I may end up having help from one of you guys on an engine build :).

;).

Know anyone with a nice front bumper in the area?

FunK73 06-11-11 09:12 PM

Im always down for an engine build. It'll be my 5th lol. No luck with a front bumper though.

7-21-11

After a few months I have a few updates.

Robert sent me pictures of a few parts getting ready to be shipped.

First is my ********** intake manifold cleaned up, welded, and emissions blocked off intake manifold for the Nikki carb.

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/g...isstuff007.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/g...isstuff008.jpg

I also received my Mallory 4309 RRFPR with fittings for my RX-7. I need to pick up my Walbro 255 still. I did also received the fittings for it already to connect it to my fuel system.

And I also received my ********** carb hat with o-ring (to help it seat on the carb). It's fully polished with a 2 1/2" inlet.

Also my exhaust manifold was painted with high temp paint.

More updates to come, especially with exhaust, gauges, and so forth.

Looks good Jag!! I can`t wait to ride in it.

Jeff20B 08-07-11 08:01 PM

Is that an Isuzu truck in the background of your NPR picture?

It looks like your intake manifold still needs work. Do this.

Any updates? I'm going the same route with mine and any info I can dig up is going to save me a lot of time. I hope your project is going well.

Jager 08-30-11 11:17 AM

It's going okay, waiting for ********** to send out the parts. He said he's testing the carb on anoter car to make sure it's good.

Can't wait :(!

Yeah, this is why I've been steering away from ordering much from them and instead having stuff fabricated locally. I want this thing done before it gets too cold to enjoy it! I will be ordering a carb hat from them, though.

Yes. Also Robert said he did do the modification you mentioned later on. Is it about equalizing pressure?

Also that is an NPR truck. I manage and operate a pet food store:

And I also operate numerous storage facilities. The NPR behind me is a Little Debbie truck.

It's going good, had a call from Robert yesterday. I can't wait to drive it. Turbo for the win :).

I hope to make about 250-300 at the wheels and be fairly reliable. Somethings I may of wanted to do different like use a Jspec 12A intake so I wouldn't of had a different exhaust manifold then stock and use a stock TII style downpipe.

Also a recent guy with a 16G made me wonder.

Jeff20B 08-31-11 12:36 PM

It creates kind of a plenum effect under the carb. When the manifold has both channels as equal as possible with the provided casting, it tends to make for a more equal flow compared with how they are stock. Plus it simply makes visual sense when you look at. 79-80 manifolds already have both channels too.

LizardFC 08-31-11 04:09 PM

I'm guessing you mean the 12at intake... would that clear an S4 turbo manifold? I've seen pics of the 12a turbo manifold and it looks very similar. Would save me a lot of trouble having to fabricate an exhaust manifold if I could find that intake.

Oh yeah, the 12AT was fuel injected, so that's not gonna help in our case.

A 12aT manifold would. I wish I've had one, kinda on the look out FYI.

You can also use an S5 compressor for a hybrid I beleive.

Wouldn't matter, still can toss a carb on it :).

Er, for a 12AT turbo.

Dur.

LizardFC 09-18-11 07:11 PM

Yeah you lost me on that one... I've come to the realization that the best way is to just fabricate everything. I wish I had a welder and somewhere to use it!

Jager 09-18-11 07:51 PM

Sometimes I really don't type out what I'm thinking and vice versa :).

I was told parts shipped out late last week, time to wait and see what I can get done before next spring.

Jeff20B 09-18-11 08:05 PM

I recently found out I'm going Nikki blow through with an S5 turbo in my REPU. I really like your exhaust manifold. I'll need to do something like that to fit the engine bay. Thanks for posting pics so I have an idea of what to do.

Is that what you're talking about. Robert (or do I just not dare say his name on this forum?) did that for me and explained it ovre the phone too.

I went with Robert because I figured he would know what he was doing. With mots local shops and many of the shops I've dealt with, I've have had this experience before. I wasn't in a hurry either. I haven't been bothered by any delays since most of them come from the actual carb. 99% of it was done within a week or two and we just wanted to keep shipping to a minimal.

Also, he is tossing in a locked dizzy for a pretty minimal fee.

I liked it because it cleared and whatever intake I may decide to go with, for a small fee I can exchange it towards a exhaust manifold (maybe a large T3 with the 12A?) or keep it as it is with a BNR stage 1 type thingy.

Either way, I'll install it all over the winter and see how the project goes. I'll have hundreds of pictures and TONS of stupid questions for you all to answer.

The rest of my shit is on the way! WOO!!!!!!

Also: Robert has been pretty easy for me to get ahold of and has answered all my questions. I've been impressed and we've had plenty of talks through e-mail and over the phone, he did a bunch of little things that surprised me that he did. Like my minimal fee for locking a dizzy, assembling oil lines for me, and testing the carb out and doing a rebuild for free.

Either way, I understand how people have had issues, I however, have not. Sorry to those who have had them :(.

Thanks for looking!
