I'm new here, where do I start?

As I've posted, I've had 5 RX7s but am rotary-les since 2009. I like the gen 1, 83 to 85 the best. When I finally find and buy the right one, I would like to build it to be fast but streetable. What threads or advice can anyone give me about bolt on modifications and what kind of hp and performance can I expect. I guess what I'm asking is, where do I read up onwhat I need to do for each stage and what I can expect in performance gains from the 12A and maybe 13b? Finally, after market companies that build street rotaries, would you recommend any? Thanks for your help and patience as I never modified the ones I had and know so little.

here's a video done by one of our member's here comparing before/after of 12a and TII swap...just a little motivation for u.

You can put a turbo on a 12A. No need for an EFI 13B. Do a boosted Nikki and a semi-locked distributor. There is plenty of information on this forum.

That's my video! Glad to know it's being used as intended

shame on you

After watching your incredible video, I wanted to leave my job and get one of these cars now. Remember, I have 4 Mopars at home, fast but they don't handle and they are not the same as a sports car. I had 5 RX7s and now remember why. Can't wait to get my first new/used one again. I will have to watch that video at lunch, a few dozen times again.

Thanks for the kind words man, I meant for that video to inspire others in their first gen builds.

I'm working on doing another swap that'll be more detailed and it may include a video series on the build - keep watching that channel!

Perhaps you should consider a 3 rotor swap like I did - I installed a Nissan motor with a crankshaft and two camshafts, all rotating the same direction. Isn't that a 3 rotor? I actually did two engine swaps into 84 RX-7s, which are described on my website in some detail.

If you are going with a rotary, I would not hesitate to listen to Jeff20B - he knows these motors.

I love that reference to a 3 rotor

12at would be cool too, but I'm not as versed in carbs - that's why I went with 13bt EFI. Tuning on a computer is easier than tuning a carb for me.

'm almost back in the fold again. Struck a deal with a forum member for a 84 GSL-SE. I am so excited. Yeah, had to take out a credit union loan but it is worth it and the price is great. I plan on keeping this one stock and not change the color either. Once this one is done, I might look for a second to "play" with. I had 5 RX7s in the past and wish I had kept them all. I don't plan on ever parting with this one as long as I can see to drive.

Glad you found one you liked man, good luck with it :bigthumb:

I am also working on a 13bt powered FB.

Ported s4 turbo motor with a T4 Garrett to run on an Adaptronic e440d ecu.

I wanted to get a few pointers on the actual swap into the chassis, as well as how to prep a tired old 1983 FB chassis for 400 whp.

1) what did you find to be the most difficult part of the swap?
2) what do you wish you'd knew when you first started that you discovered along the way?
3) did you swap the entire TII drivetrain including diff and rear axles?
4) any other tips/tricks on the swap

I will probably start my own build thread once the motor is complete (should be assembling this week or next) and ready to go in the car

How much does a turbo set up shorten the life of

I've been on a few websites that sell turbos or talk about them for RX7's, 12A and 13B and they all seem to suggest they significantly shorten the life of the motor. How bad is this? A couple of us were toying with the idea of a gen II 13B twin turbo in a gen car (the stock 255 hp version) and wondered if this was doable. We got to wondering how much work such a transplant would be even in a gen II Rx7. Eventually we discovered the 20B and we got greedy and started talking about one of these in a gen 1 car. Is any of this doable?

Inspector71 01-27-15 02:48 PM

I forgot to add, we wanted one "normal" Rx7 for daily driving, and then one that was significantly modified for "fun."

Jeff20B 01-27-15 03:12 PM

You know, the more you mod a car, the less fun it tends to be after you pass a threshold. This threshold can be too much power, or stiff suspension, heavy stiff clutch pedal, or noise, or time spent, money spent for the build, money and time spent (lost) in replacing broken parts. You mentioned being greedy...
