Che's rx-7's progress thread (3) FB's in progress.
hi all name is Richard originally from Puerto Rico.
I currently own two 1985 GSL-SE RX-7s . 1st one is bone stock engine wise, mods: removed airpump. RB header 2'' exhaust with straight through muffler pro-form 3000 cfm electric fan front Ground control coilover kit Rear Re-speed coilover kit 15x8 xxr 501's all the way around this is when i picked her up August of 2010 http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMG_2406.jpg building the coilvers http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...IMAG0244-1.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0284.jpg and this is her now http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0236.jpg 2nd is a GSL-SE thati bought from my friend and have to go and pick it up. the bad? it doesn't run. Plans are to put back the missing parts, restore the interior, build some coilovers for her and put some 15x8 black xxr 501s. kinda make her look like the blue one. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0256.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0257.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0255.jpg |
3rd. is a 1985 GSL-SE brown with a BP carbed 12A, don't ask me why it has a 12A cause i am wondering the same but she sounds so sexy and I got a good deal on her.
got a good deal on her because she had some hot start problems this is when i went to pick her up http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...X-7/ches72.jpg so the mod list for this is: ACT 6 puck unsprung clutch RB header RB intake mani Holley 600 Holley FPR Holley blue Fuel pump MSD blaster ss coils Bridge ported 2 1/2" exhaust with straight through muffler This is when i built a plate for the msd coil packs http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/RX-7/rx7.png and today i decided to pull the engine out and open it up to inspect the internals, so far i am not that happy with the things that i am finding out. some gettho rigs and supposedly the motor was built around 300 miles ago by a very reputable individual. here are a couple of pics of what i did today took her to my friends place to have him look at her, he told me that main bearings might be bad or housings might be damaged because it is not starting when hot. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0291.jpg this is my friend's house, he works with rotaries a lot. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0297.jpg then took her to the shop where i work part time and started disassembling. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0298.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0299.jpg she was out in 30 minutes. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0300.jpg first thing i found wrong, the rear housing was leaking coolant bad where it connects with the intake, whoever built the motor instead of putting a 20mm freeze plug on the hole, put a shit ton of RTV to seal it and obviously it did not work that well. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0304.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0305.jpg then when taking the front bolt out the crush washer was all jammed up in there. is so stuck in there that it won't come out, tomorrow i will work on that. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0301.jpg then when i move to the oil pan section i noticed some unusual bolts/screws (home depot metal screws holding the pan to the front cover area, i don't know if this is acceptable in the rotary world where that guy builds engines but i would not do this with any of my piston engine builds. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0302.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0303.jpg |
he front woodruff key had a little dent that didn't let the dist gear come off, after some playing around with it, it came out, also the rear flywheel nut had some deep dents as if some one didn't have the right 54mm socket and they might have used a screwdriver and a hammer instead. the clutch was also being held by different types of bolts.
i was pretty disappointed and a little mad so i called a day and went home. this is how i left her today http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0306.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/IMAG0307.jpg still waiting till tomorrow to open the engine up and if anything i have 1 extra 12a engine in my garage and 2 13Bs so i might build a 12A out of 2 or just throw a 13B, then i want to put some weld racing wheels on it and have some fun at the track. |
nice projects bro !!!!!

Lost some pics on the last post so here theyre again
then took her to the shop where i work part time and started disassembling. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0298.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0299.jpg she was out in 30 minutes. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0300.jpg first thing i found wrong, the rear housing was leaking coolant bad where it connects with the intake, whoever built the motor instead of putting a 20mm freeze plug on the hole, put a shit ton of RTV to seal it and obviously it did not work that well. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0304.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0305.jpg then when taking the front bolt out the crush washer was all jammed up in there. is so stuck in there that it won't come out, tomorrow i will work on that. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0301.jpg then when i move to the oil pan section i noticed some unusual bolts/screws (home depot metal screws holding the pan to the front cover area, i don't know if this is acceptable in the rotary world where that guy builds engines but i would not do this with any of my piston engine builds. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0302.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0303.jpg |
kept taking stuff apart and kept getting frustrated at how some people build things...
flywheel nut, looks like they torqued her with a chissel, no biggie i have a new rotating assembly, the only thing that i am using from this motor is the iron plates. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0315.jpg this is the pilot bearing, or at least it was http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0313.jpg this is how it looked when i took it all out. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0314.jpg this is me with my friend, he wanted to do the disassembling, never dealt with a rotary and he is falling in love with them! http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0317.jpg did i mention that we had to use a puller to get the flywheel out? the deadblow method will not work. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0319.jpg all out housings had a little damage, maybe a resurface from goopy might repair it, ( i have 2 good housings for it.) the rotors looked like they had some previous damage and they still rebuilt the engine like that. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0322.jpg this is one of the rotors bearings, they both looked the same and the bearing "nipple" or seat was not in the right rotor groove. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0323.jpg and the main bearings looked ugly http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0324.jpg and started getting the housings ready for assembly, had to clean the coolant whole to seal it with a 20mm freeze plug http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0327.jpg and cleaned the new rotors going in. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0332.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0330.jpg |
today after trouble shooting my sputtering issue in the silver , i found out that the fuel filter was clogged, so i replaced the fuel filter and added some sea foam and success, i was able to drive it around, so i put it in the garage, replaced the suspension, wheels, took all the interior out, shampooed the rug and seats, cleaned everything, took my windows out to adjust the wheather striping, while out i decided to tint them, also found a front grill for this one since it was missing.
here are some pics , enjoy: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/P4250375.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...f/IMAG0416.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/P4250377.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/P4250379.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/P4250380.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/P4250381.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/P4250384.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/P4250382.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/P4250383.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/P4250385.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/P4250387.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/P4250386.jpg i am tired as hell , i am going to bed! |
very bad ass bro! I had similar hot start issues with my old 12a when I tore apart the block my side seals were toast. Good Luck with your build!!!
