Building a 79
Rx7 for scca season racing. Is there any1 out there that could help guide me to build my car in regulations? I've done a bit of work with my rx7. And it almost ready to drive (stock 12a) I did get the car for 500$ with sugar in gas tank and a seized motor. I have since then done a few upgrades.

What class are you interested in and what type of racing? RX7s can be used in Autocross, Rallycross, Time Trials and Road Racing. Go to www.scca.com and click on the Programs drop down and start exploring.
Colorado has a couple of race tracks. I have been to High Plains Raceway and it is a nice track. There was a strong PRO7 contingent at the race I attended in 2017. |
Idk what kinda racing I would like to join but I wanna join a season of races. So not rally. I'm looking to get into the door of racing so I could get into formala racing or even drifting. I'll check the site out

Transmission kind
So I've been wondering the kinda transmission i have. I just dont get why this short shifter for 79-80 trans won't fit. Could it be caused from having a 78 casmo trans? How can I tell what transmission i have? Next rear end gear ratios. I'm thinking of putting a 4.4 in would it work good with the casmo trans or should I leave the 84 gsl lsd rear end alone?

If you plan on larger wheels like 15", you will want more gear, like a 4.88 or 5.12, depending on the tracks you want to run. Everyone and their brother will tell you it is cheaper to buy a built car than build one yourself. It is very true, and older RX7's are very cheap these days. The cost of building the cage can exceed that of a used racecar. Look around the Chumpcar, Luckydog, and Lemons websites for used first gens. Good luck! |

Does any1 know where they hook up on both ends? https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...c7226371f4.jpg In this pic above I have a few circled in different colors. Was wondering where each one goes? The rest I know where they hook up. Please chime in with info and pic if all have em. |
This is from the 1980 Factory Service manual but very similar. 1A:26 is a good page.

I figured out a couple places but still need the rest. And the fsm don't have clear pics to look closely. Does any1 have a stock 12a sa22c rx7? That could post some pics to help guide me to the finish line?

I took these pics from my 1979 Factory Service Manual. This manual is NOT available from foxed.ca.
The 1979, at least the early VIN ones, use a metal tube routed close the the alternator to connect to the breather. You can see this bracket also attaches to the water pump neck. The blank area the does not have a solenoid is for California only. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...ed6d0eefa4.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...7384c48018.jpg |
Yes that helps so much. Thata exactly what I needed lol. And I can see that the metal tube is just hookup up to 3 spots one end is to the top of the air filter. And down by the alternator into a metal tube to split into 2. 1 goes to the carb. And the 2nd runs thro the rats nests and to the rotary block breather I'm assuming.. does that's sound right. If so the I don't have to have the metal tube correct? I'm missing mine. And the throttle opener. But i did figure out the rest.

I've gotta buy my self one of the 79 model fsm's. Cus this rx7 is from Japan made in 1978 and shipped here in 1979.

That's crazy I looked closer at my rats nest and the one in the fsm pics u posted. And my orange solenoid is where the white one is and the rats nest tubing is also different. As the 2 hoses that come off the the distributor goes straight to the emissions plate without going to any solenoids. I did have the a/c but it did not have a solenoids. Just has the 2 solenoids with a manual transmission rats nest. I found out that this rx7 is the original style with hood prop on the passenger side. Straight from Japan. I'll show pics tomorrow.

How does one get Japan plates in the usa?

Here are the pics of my rats nest pretty simple.

I did ha e 2 carbs and swap parts to create this one so I just hope the jets r right. |
I've found out the stock 79/78 carb had 92 primary and 160 secondaries. When I did my last rebuild I never knew about different size jets. So I bet I put a high fuel in a primary spot. Imma have to check that out. Give me a few and I'll let yall know if she starts once I get them. I also got some new shoes for the rx7 on stock rims. I'll post some pics later.

these 2 screws r a pain to get adjusted right to get the carb to run. How many turns out do yall go to after a rebuild of the carb? Or how many turns out do u start at before u fully adjust the carb? |
New update.
She runs needs brake booster and I've sent that off to be rebuilt. I'm also adding an s5 alternator. And had a quick question the thick black wire that went to the stock alternator. Does that hook up to anything else then the battery? Would I need to add that wire onto the new 12v battery wire I ran to the new alternator? See pic. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...79e008f5bc.jpg |
