Adsy's "New" project: 1983 S2 Rx7 >Weird happenings in here<
Ok it’s time to start a new build thread. While this is the "same car" as I have been building for the past 3 years, there isn’t really much left of it now and it is an entirely new direction.
I took a package from work in December and armed with some money in the bank and a great opportunity to have some decent time off I decided I was finally going to build the Rx-7 I always wanted and do it properly. The S2 was at the final body work stages when I pulled the pin on it. I did so because I just wasn’t happy with the build quality of the car due to me chopping and changing my mind and do major chassis and body mods two or even three times in some cases. So im startting over. I’m going to start off the thread with the engine as it’s is one of the few things getting carried over as planned….
This was built with the intention of running up around 22-25psi maximum on a GT3582r. Fuel is still going to be straight LPG with the GRA carby, and a Haltech PS1000 controlling, boost and a custom made water injection system (including failsafes) Here’s the photos to get us going. https://imageshack.us/a/img716/6505/dscf3636g.jpg https://img198.imageshack.us/img198/844/img1047zi.jpg https://imageshack.us/a/img717/6156/img1035gu.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/404/img1049qd.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/856/img1045di.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/707/img1041og.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/69/img1038gs.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/152/img1039u.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/826/img1033a.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/4/img1044uk.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/29/img1040iq.jpg |

So what’s so new for this “new” S2 project?
Well it started on NYE when I bought this. https://imageshack.us/a/img842/1575/...9627985371.jpg A 1987 FC3s Rx7 GTR It has a Std engine with a GT35R Turbo, 42mm Garrett wastegate (14psi), 3 inch straight through exhaust w cannon muffler (loud), 850cc secondary injectors, Microtech Mt12s computer, FMIC, Walbro in tank fuel pump, engine damper, rebuilt gearbox, Xtreme HD cushion button clutch, Tomei 2 way LSD, DTSS eliminators, HSD coilovers ,Bride driver’s seat, drift handbrake button, MU's secret D1 spec rear brake pads (handbrake locks up prefectly), steering rack spacers for extra lock, 17x9 front wheels w near new tyres, s5 tail lights, Front and rear white line swaybars. Some Pics from early New years day https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/28/dscf3770a.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/842/jan12q.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/543/dscf3767x.jpg So i thought this was a S2 project.... Well it is, so i need to sell some parts i didn't need to help recover costs. So this was the car as new years day ended Huge thanks to Rick!!!!!!!! https://imageshack.us/a/img339/8163/dscf3804b.jpg Then over the next few days. https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/26/img2148et.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/59/img2149uh.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/842/img2151em.jpg By this time all that was left in the FC was the entire front and rear suspension, brakes and steering.. oh and a FC... not a S2.... :gay: |
and this how the FC (or what's was a FC) now stands.....
https://imageshack.us/a/img41/1843/img2301p.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/266/img2292s.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/689/img2293f.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/152/img2294i.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/812/img2299v.jpg |
then over the next 2 or so weeks i did some minor body work..
https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/41/img2207ki.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/197/img2205as.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/171/img2276xx.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/19/img2206f.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/801/img2284eb.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/834/img2285ba.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/405/img2286ip.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/23/img2288qc.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/41/img2254gn.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/692/img2257fv.jpg |
ok ok ok, to the S2.....
See it's still here https://imageshack.us/a/img90/5677/img2302f.jpg I wanted to do some "minor" floor repairs, so i had to get the car up in the air. https://imageshack.us/a/img213/8328/...4312485371.jpg Hang on, is that a S2 with a FC under it? Hmmmmm :!: I've got an idea, an idea sooo smart that my head would explode if i even tried to explain it! \:D/ As with any car, you should brace it up iff cutting any part of the floor for "repairs" https://imageshack.us/a/img690/5049/img2313yy.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/809/img2315ai.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/28/img2316qk.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/690/img2313yy.jpg |
So this is where the S2 is currently at.
https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/442/img2410y.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/26/img2412e.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/507/img2416j.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/10/img2417ym.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/826/img2418wx.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/515/img2425h.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/443/img2424r.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/703/img2423hh.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/835/img2422j.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/713/img2421kq.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/202/img2420y.jpg https://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/803/img2419g.jpg So to "cut" to the chase, the entire S2 floor, rails, and front and rear towers are being replaced. Not an uncommon thing to do when restoring an old car, im just doing it with a later model. The deep down idea for this spawed about 18 years ago when i was at working at Pedders. A guy bought in his restored Ford XM ute. It had its floor replaced with that of a XF ute as even though it was much newer the design and size hadn't altered that much. I almost started this project about 18-24 Mpnths ago, but people, including myself talked me out of it. But in the past couple of years, my skills have improved, the desire is greater and there was also months of research of other such conversions. Most of the conversions i've come across were a bit adhoc, and i've learn't from these builds what not to do, as well as a few must do's. Before you go thinking, you cant just weld two cars together.... well im not, i'm cutting and unpicking factory panels, to re-attach them in the same manner as any replacement quarter or floor panel would be in normal restoration. The FC floor and firewheel is to be fitted to the S2 the same way as it was built. The rear arches will attach, the same way as it was built etc.... Sooooooooo Project outline. Chassis: 1983 Mazda SA22C Rx7 (series 2) FC3S front suspension & steering (including column), mounted in factory towers and rails (not fabricated, factory) FC3s Rear Suspension, IRS baby!!! mounted in factory towers and rails all engine, gearbox, tail shaft, exhaust etc will mount in the standard FC locations Body: Std s2/3 Rx7 i'll make it as bog stock as i can, but with the BBS rims. Interior: FC dashboard and door trims (modified to fit) RX8 Seats. Mix and match of S2/S4 trims as fitment allows. Haltech dash cluster (replaces all gagues and idiot lights) FC dash/window switches Mechanical: 13bt engine & GT3582R Turbo (as per 1st post). Adsy build Water injection S5 gearbox with std FC3S shifter location FC3S Tomei 2 way LSD HSD coilovers DTSS eliminators Front and rear whiteline swaybars Std FC3s Brakes,(all mounts, lines, boost pedal box Std FC3s) I'm guessing most people wether they "get this" or not, will be asking, "why?" well why not? its been a deep seeded idea for many years, I know i'm capable and i want to complete at least one truly unique Rx7 8) A world first conversion i belive! And thats where i am as of today.... Flame suit on... Wish me luck! :-) |
Sweet, good on ya for going for it. I talk to Matt (Buzz3n) a lot as here is living over here at the mo and we were talking about this conversion of yours just the other day.
|
wow, this is one hell of a project! i cant wait to see whats happens.
|
WOW That is amazing great job. That engine is going to be a work of art.
|
Thanks guys,
That engine has been 2 years of gathering parts and calling in favours owed etc... It's even a higher spec than I'd hoped for due to the great help from Rohan at Xtreme Rotaries. I'm waiting on some more plasma cutting tips to arrive so I can remove the back seat area and rear floor. Once that's done and I've trimmed back to the factory seams I can double check my dimensions mark out the final Trimming of the FC panels and start to mate the two. The joining areas such as sills (you guys call them rockers I think?) and firewall will be cleaned up and zinc primer before they go together. Once the body and chassis are one I will fully strip the new shell and prepare it as any other full restoration. |
:rlaugh: You sir, have even more problems than I do!
This takes the term swap to an entirely different planet. Watching with much anticipation. |
cooooooooool

This build will be awesome. I'll definitely be watching :)

Well after a week of not being able to use my plasma cutter, today i was back in business.
I was so happy it made me https://imageshack.us/a/img59/6528/img2441lt.jpg Yes i actually made a smiley face out of some of the tips :gay: Anyway a small update but a big milestone, I manged to cut out the rest of the floor. \:D/ https://imageshack.us/a/img835/538/img2445is.jpg https://imageshack.us/a/img90/8030/img2444o.jpg https://imageshack.us/a/img15/7514/img2442ai.jpg Next is to neaten all those edges and chop off the front upper rails 8) |
Oh my god! that's going to be a wierd car!
Looks good though, the engine in particular!,The rear rotor already looks happy :-). Why go with carbed LPG though? You already have most of the needed stuff to go with programmable LPG vapor injection, which is far better than the GRA mixer setup. It's really simple to setup too! Only downside is that current LPG injectors are all low impedance, but your ECU rocks, so it can control those. I recommend valtek 34's. |
OMG that car is nuts! no wait, YOU'RE nuts! in a very good way though!

Absolutely fricken nuts, I'll keep watching this for sure!
|
haha yeah i'm nuts, always have been this just shows how much.
John, i looked into vapour injection when i first started the "old" project 3-4 years ago andat that point on time, it wasen't worth the effort and cost for the reward. For the power im chasing i needed something like 8 or 12 injectors which is just crazy. The Gas Reasearch Australia set up are great Carby and well proven with decent HP in rotors and piston engines over here. Mine has been modified and I've got plans to control some of its functions with the ECU anway. My LPG guru tells me all the need is in the igntion side, and that the gas is easy. Having said that i might revisit it now i have the chance. |
