Enlightenment
I mentioned enlightenment in the very beginning of this thread. Let me count the ways: I've learned what igniters are and how they work. Learned about trailing and leading spark plugs. Learned the car will actually run just on trailing. Learned how not to use a ratchet on spark plugs. Learned rtv for gaskets. Learned tapping a given housing sideways to break and old gasket free. Learned to check the mounts on my oil cooler for droppage that could rub and compromise. Learned a lot of stuff needs to me removed to take out a simple radiator on my rx7. Learned to reinstall new foam under new radiator install... it has a purpose. Learned what tstat to stay away from and which temperature to buy a tstat for my car/climate. Learned it's nice to have smaller hands ( don't even go there, it's not true!!!) learned i might as well do some cosmetic improvements while all this stuff is off the car now. Learned to take my time and look at things from different angles- sometimes there's a better way just looking at it longer. Learned a 220 pc tool kit doesn't come with any extensions(!!) learned that so far Mazda designed a pretty userfriendly car to work on... I'm still learning

Evans coolant
ok boys here's a big question. Had anyone heard of Evans waterless coolant? Saw first on J Leno Garage. I'm intrigued but realize I'm Rotary everything else is not. But it might make sense. After all it's a closed system. I'm deleting the heat core, reconditioning the radiator. It'll be a new system. Would Evans be a good alternative? I already got a reply from Evans . Said they have used in in Rotary with much success just suggested new core, radiator and hoses. Well that's me!! If you get a chance check it out tell me what you think

I saw your SE there too! I wish I would have known what issues you were having. I had the tools, new connections, shrink tube, etc. I also had an upper/lower rad hose at my cabin, but it was for 12A. Maybe we could have made it work?
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...a607df001a.jpg I was parked just 1 car ahead of you at the Dam. In your pictures I had already left, but I found this one that proves it! The whole time I was there I was rolling with friends. Mostly RX8 folks. I missed out on a lot of the 1st Gen stuff sadly. I may have talked to you a little bit, but I can't recall. So many new people I met down there lol. I had to make a long drive as well, 13 hours back up the PA! Luckily we had no issues. |

Back to main topic.. water pump. I see there's two gaskets at $23 and change at mazdatrix. I can assume A. I need them. (?) B. They don't come with water pump(?)

All the running gear on mine is from my gslse donor, except the engine. It's an aging pineapple engine with lapped side housings (yuck). It smokes on decel because of it. Great compression, and it tore up US129, but it's about to get a goopy semi p port. totally incredible. Great thread! Lol My name is Derek btw, but I might know the Curtis you mentioned lol |
Well it ended up in the right place. The p port will make it sing and brap with the best of em!! These are the kind of rotary stories that make it all cool and satisfying. I'm just glad it got finished. The wide body kit was Air Buni brand jfyi. No longer available so don't smash it up!!

Mike I read the whole thing. So you still didn't have your car ready for DGRR. You've waited a long time for that much damage to be repaired.

This is good stuff, has some limitations. Would recommend a 50/50 fill of good quality coolant for first fill, make sure no leaks, road test etc and if all good switch it over later if after a time everything is fine. Cost is a little high in event of a mistake/leak to replace.
the part Evans talks about no steam seems to make sense. Steam means hotter, has oxygen which equals oxidation. Imho that equates to water jackets eventually failing. Took off the old hoses and I'm pretty sure they were original. There's rust deposits around the spouts where the hoses came off. The tstat cover is particularly rusty. I'm going to emery it lightly then clean further w scotch brite. I'll paint outside with high temp and leave interior alone. I know I could get a new one but think I can salvage the original. |

Have had a lot going on in last year, not all car related. Did lose a lot of time dealing with insurance co. Lost my spot in line at my friends' shop because of it. His shop is busy,he does a lot of body/paint repairs on high end cars for several local dealerships as well as restorations. Have not found anyone better & trust him to do all paintwork on motorcycles i restore. Have waited to get back in rotation for my car for awhile as i don't want him to feel pressure to rush-he knows what i want,we've worked together a long time.

oh that's real funny.. you CANT bring rx7 and get to drive the dragon in a Buick.. I BRING rx7 and never make it to the dragon!! I have to ask..? What is the non stock coil pack you got going there? Looks like one coil is a double and a single.(?) funny coil story.. two years ago Kenny discovered that years earlier the wrong coil was installed on mine. A standard coil if you will.. he researched and figured out that the proper coil for the SE changes from 9 volts to 12 volts where as the one on my car did not. Also a standard coil isn't made to handle the highest revs..I drove it that way for years. The difference was instantly noticeable.

THAT is a very interesting and unique mod. I've been all over the place in these forums I've yet to see that one. I'll have to check that one out more later. I still have air pump and all the pollution stuff. I'll definitely look harder at this one when I get passed all the stuff I'm doing now.

Currently existing stock w air pump. We talked about this for an air pump delete and optional double pulley on water pump(?) which would be adjusted via the alternator adjustable bracket(?)https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...d881372634.jpghttps://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...d949e6d66d.jpg
