84 Gsl-se Project Clueless

completely new to the Rotary world.. and decided to buy a 84 Gsl-se because in theory it had the majority of the key pieces that i needed to drift the car.. now that i have found it hard to find good old parts i decided ill just make it bad ass and rarely drift it.
it needs some work and will get alot of work. really want to turbo it but i have been told that the 1.3B 6-port in it will not handle boost. so back to the drawing boards
pictures soon

the stock -SE makes a good drift car, all you really need is an exhaust. my friends used to do it, in the 90's. they had drift videos on VHS tape!

Cuzzynz 03-06-13 06:40 PM

hoping to do a catback kit soon.. to cold to do any work at the moment

Qingdao 03-06-13 08:19 PM

Headers are a good start for power. I agree... COLD!!!

Cuzzynz 03-07-13 10:36 AM

I'd like to turbo it tho.. Until then it's all body and suspension

j9fd3s 03-07-13 02:27 PM

for power you need something like this RX7 1975-1985: Exhaust - Complete Systems: Street Port Exhaust System - 84-85 GSL-SE -

and then you need some springs and shocks, and you're in the ballpark

i had a GSL-SE back in the day that did a couple of drift events, it was a super simple car and a ton of fun

Well if you want to keep the 6 port and u have the money streetport it. If not just get a full 2 in exhaust with a aftermarket exhaust manifold

HRnico 03-07-13 03:33 PM

The cats have to go, full RB system really woke up SE! Make sure the Aux ports are opening.

Cuzzynz 03-07-13 03:41 PM

well rather then spend 1000$ on my exhaust i could just have a 3" exhaust made right? or do rotarys require the proper back pressure?

Not nessasarlly . But put two exhaust canisters on it or it'll be louder than sin.

Just get the duel headers and mid pipe; then get someone to make a hump and go two into two canisters... A TRUE duel exhaust!!!

If I was staying NA thats what I'd do.

Cuzzynz 03-08-13 10:32 AM

i will either run a turbo or do a V8 swap only because the v8 will make alot of torque with very little work

the RB is expensive, but it bolts on, its quiet and it works.

3" is gonna be really loud... by the time you get it quiet the RB system would have been faster, easier and depending on how long it takes, the same money

It's not that the 6-ports don't handle boost, it's that the N/A engine has a high compression ratio rotor that would lend itself to easier detination. And the 6-port function is a fairly moot point once you add forced induction into the mix as the 6-ports work like a poor man's turbo, allowing more air/fuel into the chamber under load.

But if you are keeping the boost modest, there is no reason why you can't turbo charge an N/A 6-port. But if you want to have unlimitted boost potential, just swap out your 6-port for an S4 or S5 turbo block.

BTW... welcome to the club. And when you get a chance, post some pics of your new car!

here is my rx7, at the moment one of the best pictures i got

Cuzzynz 04-13-13 03:41 PM

i have decided to leave the 13b in my rx7 alone and just drive it. so as much as i dont want to say it but no turbo this year, i am going to put a new exhaust on it tho. and have been looking around for any other cheap ways to make some little power out of it. thinking maybe a bigger fuel pump and injectors and regulator or something?
any ideas?

HRnico 04-14-13 11:49 PM

My SE gets plenty of fuel on the stock fuel system. Just need to get more air in and out. Make sure the Aux Ports are opening. If you have to remove the intake manifold to clean up the sleeves get the Pineapple or Atkins inserts. Get a good header and free flowing 2.5 inch exhaust. Have your injectors cleaned, new plugs and wires if needed, make sure timing is correct. Then loose some weight, get a lighter battery, remove the spare tire and jake when around town. Toss all the loose stuff out of the car. My SE weighs 2500 lb with half tank of gas and I still have a complete interior. If you don't need to pass emissions lose the cats, air pump, ACV, and any hoses and belts no longer needed. The cold start assist system can go as well. Every little piece helps.

Cuzzynz 04-15-13 12:43 PM

Thanks ill try all that

Cuzzynz 04-15-13 12:55 PM

Are the intakes from a 13b n/a interchangeable??

I did all these things on my car and it made a world of difference.

-cleaned injectors (witchhunter)
-k&n drop in filter
-atkins 6 port inserts
-Bönez Main Cat Race Pipe
-RB muffler
-removed and cleaned the intake, MAP sensor, etc.
-new O2 sensor, temp sensor

S4 intake can be made to work. takes a little bit of fab work. If you search it, the're are some old threads about it. I was going to do it, may still.

Cuzzynz 04-15-13 08:15 PM

if i change the intake from my 84 se to 90 rx7 could i use the maf and throttle as well or would i have to use my stuff? cause i have been told that the 90 N/A maf will aid in air flow and i assume a newer intake and throttle might work better and be less confusing on my part

Cuzzynz 04-16-13 06:28 AM

And are the Atkins 6 port sleeves just slide into place or do I have to take the complete motor apart?

HRnico 04-16-13 10:56 AM

You will have to remove the lower intake manifoldto slide them in. Should also clean the carbon out of the ports at that , so they will operate smoothly. The S5 LIM bolts up better to the SE, but you'll have to make the Aux ports and VDI work somehow. The MAF use different output voltage values to the ECU

Cuzzynz 04-16-13 01:22 PM

S5 LIM bolts? And ok so I can't use different maf so no cold air? Lol

Cuzzynz 04-16-13 05:56 PM

Nvm got it.. Lower intake manifold. Ha I'm a dumbie
