Update 7/18/2020
I think this may be the last update for awhile. I’m pretty sure the girlfriend will kill me if any more boxes show up lol! Let’s get straight to it! I received all my stuff back from powder. Glad I have steel motor mounts for both sides, and now freshly powdercoated. I haven’t decided on what mounts I want to go with when we get there yet...I may just order the Mazda Comp ones. However, that won’t be for awhile! I also picked up a HKS Twinpower from my buddy who was going smart coils. I paired it with a bracket that was made by a gentleman on Facebook. I think he’s selling under Code Red Motorsports. It’s a really nice 3D printed bracket. I also was finally able to install the FD Motorsports U-Type Intercooler. It looks really good and turned out great! However...install wasn’t as bolt in and go as I thought it would. I could not get the ducting extension to fit. I tried everything short of pulling the bumper and re-bar. I’m not sure why it wouldn’t fit, perhaps the PO installed the radiator incorrectly previously not leaving as much of a gap as there should be. However, without the extension the main ducting seems to be placed at the same point the KnightSports one would, so I’m okay with it for now. Also, due to some carelessness on my part I cracked the ducting slightly. I can fix it with epoxy later on down the road, so I’m not too concerned. I think the car is definitely done for a while. Performance wise the only thing I see myself adding is a Ron Davis or Koyo radiator. There are still things I’m unhappy with (scratches in some interior plastics etc), but I can always get those fixed over time and when I find a good deal. I still need to install the Banzai Transmission Brace, but don’t think that’s worthy of an update by itself.

Until next time!

Update 9/29/2020
See, I said it’d be a bit before my next update! I’ve done a couple of things I wanted to post an update for. First, I purchased some Nagisa Auto Shakkito plates for the FD and ended up installing them in..somewhat of an unconventional way. I first lined the backside of where it sits on the firewall with felt so it wouldn’t rub the paint. The kit also comes with M8 bolts and they expect you to drill two holes out bigger that the rubber that lines along the firewall clips into. I didn’t want to do that incase I ever wanted to revert. I noticed the size of the hole was incredibly similar to M6. I just tapped the four holes for M6 and bought different bolts. Installation was a breeze and since the holes are the same size the clips still work. The other thing I purchased was the JP3 Throttle Cable Relocation kit. It’s a really nice kit. I think removing the OEM cable is a PITA unless you have two people for removing the clip from the firewall. If you don’t care about not breaking that clip it’s a much easier install lol. I also begged and pleaded with them to disassemble and powder a throttle body for me. I’m glad that it no longer stands out like it did when it was bare aluminum.

The car, at this point, is pretty much done. I’ve put the rest of my immediate plans for it (High Flow Cat, Koyo N Flow) on hold while I focus on the 20b build in the FC. Once that’s done I might come back and wrap up the rest of the immediate and extended plans I wanted to do to the FD.

Here’s the Shakitto plate installation

A mod that you don't see .... :) That cable really cleans up the engine bay ... Thanks for your support!

silverTRD 10-04-20 02:25 PM

Jaw dropping build! I see lots of little parts I need to buy for my FD. Looking forward to the next update.

twinturborx7pete 10-04-20 06:39 PM

I just love all the black powdercoating.

CarbonR1 10-05-20 12:16 AM

Looks great!

Are your fenders rolled? If not, how do you not rub with that wheel/tire setup in the front?

Molotovman 10-05-20 06:05 AM

I wish I could see this in person to get the whole "experience". Truly beautiful FD!

Thanks! It's a never ending battle on acquiring parts.

Thank you! I am rolled, however I rolled to fit the old 18's. With the 17's I have on now I would have not needed to roll the fenders.

You can! Go to DGRR this coming year :)

I just wanted to give everyone a quick update.

I am no longer updating this thread on RX7 Club. I am moving all of my progress to a different forum. You can still receive status and check up here via PM though!

Update 2/28/2021
I've decided to post updates both here and the other place simultaneously.
It’s been awhile since my last post. I’ve been steadily collecting things for the next vision for the car. I grabbed some goodies from JP3 (Fuel Filter Relocation) and Garage Alpha (Nardi emblem replacements and Relay Covers). I also purchased quite a few MazdaSpeed things including the rest of the A-Spec stuff, MS-02 wheels, and the front and rear strut bars. I’m really excited to have a complete A-Spec car and I’m doing it as right as I know how. The lenses that came with the bumper are basically BNIB and included a brand new hardware kit with them. The side skirts are complete and include the OEM grills that are commonly punched out or missing. I plan to powder coat the strut bars flat black and mask off the emblems much like how I’ve done for the FC. I was able yesterday to go out and do a full fluid flush on the FD and install a high torque starter and the Banzai Transmission Crossmember. The crossmember was kind of a pain if you don’t remove the cat, but it wasn’t too bad.

I’m working on acquiring a house a little later this year so I’ve put stuff on relative hold for now, but I’m excited to jump back in and finish out this vision of the car.

Here is the all the MazdaSpeed goods that came in

Cool parts. In for feedback on the transmission brace.

Super clean build with attention to detail. Doing it right in this thread.

Johnny Kommavongsa 03-02-21 09:11 PM

Very nice. I may have to go to DGRR just to see this and hang out if you are still going.

Thanks! Will definitely follow up eventually with how it rides. I'm very concerned with increased vibration so I'm going to be on the lookout for that.

Unfortunately, we had to postpone going this year. The fiance and I are starting house hunting during that time frame. Hopefully we are both able to go in 2022 :)

I've got that brace. With the poly mount that it comes with there is a little bit more NVH but it may or may not be noticeable to you.

I switched it to a rubber mount (I forget the part number, but that brace uses a really common transmission mount pattern you can get one at autozone) and I've been pretty happy with it. Plus I still have the original poly one if I ever want to switch it back, it's not that difficult to do.

Amazing build! Wow - seriously.

One question does pop up for me as im looking to grab the BBS RG-R's as well. Did you go from 18 to 17 to be more OEM?
Or was that decision more for performance or looks?

Thanks for this and would love to grab your link for the other site too!

Random Car Update
We are inching closer to finding and purchasing a house so that I may begin on the next step of the FD journey.

An update on the transmission brace. I removed it fairly quickly. I'm trying to keep this as a nice cruiser and the brace introduced a vibration at certain RPM that shook my OEM head unit and made a horrible buzzing noise.

I originally had 18's on the car and didn't enjoy them. I wasn't able to run a wide tire in the front with the 18's and the 17's look a lot more visually pleasing to me.
