Let me be the first to say I'm glad you're doing this :icon_tup:

Rxmfn7 01-14-13 11:52 PM

Youve got a piece of FD history there :) Glad to see cars brought back to life.

rx7rocks 01-15-13 01:06 AM

Nice car, glad to see it after such a long time. Post some more pics.

I plan on keeping the car as intact as possible i got lucky and found the custom twin turbo intercooler kevin made specially for this car but there was no duct with it so i am on the hunt for that part. i am thinking i am going to get the ronin speedworks duct but just waiting on them to let me know if it will work with this one or not. Also upgrading to a haltech ps1k since the m4 motec is not in the car. I had to remove the roll bar due to being 6'4" and needing the seat to go back the extra 3". I will keep posting up pics as they come and will get some videos posted as soon as its up and running

Awesome! Us old school "big listers" all have wide grins seeing this sucker!

Have fun with it and treat 'er right!

Dale

7dust 01-15-13 08:28 AM

Quite a score there. I'd do the same thing if I had it.

ZE Power MX6 01-15-13 10:36 AM

Nice, glad to see someone is restoring this car.

ptrhahn 01-15-13 10:37 AM

Very cool!

I used to really dig those ASP headlights back in the day.

turbojeff 01-15-13 09:52 PM

Keep us updated on the progress!

jr_tx 01-18-13 05:56 PM

I read Jefflit's story about the One Lap experience. Funny how Kevin decided to drive his car to NY because it'd be more reliable than his truck.

Are you going to race it?

Thanks for the rebuild thread. Please pm if you decide to sell. :)

Flyweight 01-18-13 06:56 PM

So glad to hear that this car, which really pushed the envelope in its day, is not being parted or bastardized. Twin turbo. 315s. CCWs. A well thought out SMIC. Very forward thinking.

rx-4 01-19-13 12:29 PM

I am not sure what i am going to do with it yet probably just keep it as a weekend warrior for cruises and the occasional autocross. It is a very well thought out design on the whole car i got lucky cause when i got the car the intercooler wasn't there but i ended up finding out who had it and bought it from them. I paid more than i should have for the intercooler but figured it was worth it to keep the whole design together. I definitely dont plan on parting or bastardizing this car only changes i plan as of now are to get a different hood for more ventilation underhood, new steering wheel with quick release to make the inside for me feel a little more roomy, a few extra gauges (egt, oil temp, fuel pressure) and center gauge pod. I had to pull the cage but an going to have a new one made that will allow the seats to go back all the way. Unfortunately the duct and ecu didnt come with car so i am working with ronin speedworks for a duct and lmsefi for going with a ps1k. And if i decide to sell you will be the first person to know jr_tx

This is awesome, glad to see a piece of history being resurrected...

RCCAZ 1 01-23-13 08:41 PM

Same here. Kevin was a huge innovator and contributor when I joined the community back in 2000. Glad to see someone resurrecting his ride! RIP KW!

due to work and a flooded garage its been awhile since i put up an up date. as of now i am just getting the harness setup for my ps1k thanks to the help of c ludwig alot of heat shrink tube and solder i have that almost done. next step is wait for my smic duct from ronnin speedworks so i can get the intercooler piping made. i do need a little assistance on a question also the coolant port tube on the rear iron for the heater is not there. does anyone know what i can use for this or where i can get a new tube?

Nassin31spr 03-05-13 06:57 AM

well its been awhile since ive done an update to this ive been busy at work and trying to also get my fc done at the same time, juggling the 2 cars is difficult at times. as of now though the fd has the ps1000 completely installed thanks to help from chris at lms-efi(i would recommend him to anyone that is wanting to do a haltech great guy to work with!) , the car is also going to be running methanol now( thanks to coolingmist) and the intercooler has a duct finally thanks to ronin speedworks (great quality stuff from them). unfortunately i did not get the piping and duct kevin made for this car so i have had to make some extra modifications and change things like how the intake was routed. i am currently in the process of getting the intercooler piping made and hopefully will have finalized pics next week. i am hoping the car will be ready to go to turblown for some tuning here in the next month so i can finally hear the car run and drive it. i included a few pics for you guys of the progress. sorry there's not many i keep forgetting to take any till after the fact.

1993 cymturbo1 06-05-13 05:01 PM

Wow long time used to spend alot of time around this car with kevin. pm if there is any thing i can try and help you with. would love to chat either way thanks jason. p.s this car car sound unreal kevin came back from a spin in it said it was insane but a turbo i think blew that was the last time he drove it.

1993 cymturbo1 06-05-13 05:13 PM

any new Picks?

jacobcartmill 06-05-13 05:18 PM

let me know if you have any questions with the wiring.

i just wired up my PS1k (i bought from ludwig as well, an old friend of mine) about 3 weeks ago. check out my build thread.

rx-4 07-23-13 11:09 PM

no finished pics yet but hoping next week i will have some. all i have left is to wait for my new intercooler couplers to bolt the piping together, wait for the air cleaners to get here to finish the clearancing under the front passenger headlight, wire up the aux injectors on the intake manifold, tap and mount a air temp sensor along with my temp sensors for intake temp monitoring, extend the one side of the downpipe 1-2 inches for tighter fitting, wiring for the 2 fuel pumps to be switched back and forth, and lastly start it and bring it to turblown sometime soon for a tune. short list i know but with work and family time at the cabin on our days off its taking longer than expected.

also just a fyi for anyone following i am possibly going to be selling the car after i get it running and tuned so dont be surprised if you see it for sale this fall/winter. i am wanting too buy a house and could use the money. even though the fd is my dream car, i just wasn't ready for this baby to fall in my lap yet and take all my savings but since i didnt want some fast and furious ricer wanna be buy it and ruin it with ebaydm and stickers that will easily make this baby 1k+ hp to the wheels i had to buy it. then again i will have to judge selling it after i drive it once. i will probably take a drive and never get out of the seat again lol. if i do keep it forsure the headlights are going though i have tried to let them grow on me but just cant, they look too much 3000gt for me so eventually if i keep it those are going to get swapped out for some hotwatter labs headlights.

Turblown 10-27-13 09:36 PM

I'm sorry I've been too busy for a tuning session. This guy is local to you, you should give him a ring;

rx-4 10-28-13 09:31 AM

i talked to excessive a couple weeks back and debating if i want to wait for you guys to have an opening or not. i just want to make sure that i get the best tune for the money and i have only seen a couple 7s go through that shop since i was in high school.

RogueFab 10-29-13 04:30 PM

Nice work. It is tough to choose a tuning shop. I know from recent experience in my area :(

rx-4 10-29-13 05:55 PM

I hear you I am just weary that if I don't bring it to a rx7 specialty shop or even somewhere that gets a rotary more than once every 3 yrs for tuning they are going to setup something wrong and cost me my motor, or my car won't be as reliable or powerful as it could be.

Howard Coleman 10-29-13 07:21 PM

as a friend of Kevin i am happy to see his name and car resurrected. lots of creativity in that R2. i wish you good luck in your efforts.

if Turblown is currently too busy i recommend Beyond Redline in Green Bay, Wi. good tuners who understand rotaries are rare and it would be worth your while to make the trip.

howard

rx-4 11-15-13 12:57 PM

thanks for the info howard i am definitly willing to travel for a good tuner thats forsure. the car is already put in the garage for the winter so i am hoping that i can setup a time in the early spring for turblown otherwise i will be making it up your way possibly. i really want to get this car down to DGRR next year so wherever i need to drive to get it tuned im game for. over the winter i am going to try to get the body work done on this since i did find my oil pan is leaking. since i have to pull the motor again i figure might as well get a fresh coat of paint down on the engine bay so might as well get the whole thing painted and looking fresh.

DerrickFD 09-18-20 02:21 AM

Wanted to let anyone who is interested know that I am now the owner of Kevin’s fd and picked it up without an ecu I was able to find a microtech Lt-16c brand new with a fresh harness loom An hour away from me and reasonable price so I jumped on it all I need is the connectors before I can wire it up from the knowledge I have it has 2k miles on the seals but has been sitting for 2 years one was outside during a winter under a cover so really wanting to compression test it or if I should just wire it up and see how she runs. I had got my first fd when I was 17 years old trading up and I definitely fell in love with rotarys and the fd chassis after about a year of dailying it in the Vegas heat with only around 68k miles I believe the stock radiator upper inlet had completely disintegrated from inside the hose while an hour from home so I lost a good amount of coolant before I realized and was able to slide it up a lil more and sat there getting air bubbles and letting it cool for an hour so the drive back would be fine but still wasn’t able to shut it down quick enough at the red light left turn lane when she started climbing so it definitely started taking out the coolant seals even more than what they were going at(every few days lots of condensation thick smoke while daily driving, did it since I had got it) and after that it was every start that was thick smoke and more each time along with oil burning smoke coming from the stock twins every stop and with loosing my job at 18 a lil while after I traded it and have always always regretted it I always dreamed of rebuilding the engine and learning everything I could on it so I guess now is my chance. I don’t think I could ever get rid of this car and I hopefully have plenty of time to learn everything I can, besides my work schedule being pretty shit lately haven’t had the time or motivation to start but after finding out yesterday who Kevin wyum was and the history he had in the development of 3rd gen rx7s was mind blowing I do not ever want to get rid of this car I would absolutely love to build this piece of history to its former glory and do it right at the same time I hope I can learn how to use this page more and keep you updated and maybe find help along the way
kevins car has found its home and will be in great care I wish I could have had the chance to meet him but since this wonderful place exists I feel I still can learn so much from him
Rest in piece Kevin
