The NO $h!T 7175 2jz FD build thread!

To get part updates when they come before I have time to post in the thread, check my instagram. Follow me @basedjay_ or #noshitrx7

Here's where my build thread will be for my 93 RX-7 that's soon to be 2jz swapped!

Little background on the car:

Previous owner was a friend of mine who traded his R32 GTS-T for this 93 FD and some cash. Not many people have FD's where I'm currently residing (Memphis) so it was cool to see one. Well, as usual, the rotary blew and my friend pretty much lost motivation in it. So it was sold to another friend, then he decided he wanted to build his ariel instead, so I bought it! Long time lover of FD's and Supras, the opportunity is possible so I figured why not make the best of both worlds! I've owned 12 cars including this one, all were modded by me. Yes a lot, but I've bought and sold a lot to get where I'm at and have made a lot of money. I feel like I've began to be burnt out on the whole "buy and sell for profit" thing, so now I'm actually building a car from "the ground up". Original plans was to throw an LSx in it and sell it for a huge profit and buy my other "affordable" dream car, a Supra. But then as I was shopping for a motor, the idea of a 2j popped up and I proceeded to click the "buy it now" button lol. Needless to say, I'm very excited for the build and will try to do the best damn work I can possibly! It'll be a learning experience but with MOST of the stuff I feel confident.

Here's a picture of the RX-7 when it ran (Only picture I have until I get a trailer to pull it home)

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...77656999_n.jpg

And just to whore out my friends Ariel Atom that he's building that I spoke about:

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...49132064_o.jpg

It'll have a 6262, and a completely built Ecotec motor. It'll be sick when it's done for sure!

Plans for the motor are 7175, AEM, GSC S2's, etc etc. I plan to make roughly 700 whp! The car will be completely color swapped, tucked bay, Feed widebody, and a few more cosmetic things. I have a long road ahead of me for sure, but I know it'll be worth it and I'm damn excited! As I said, I ordered the motor already, it'll actually be here today! Stay tuned for some tear down pictures and some heavy cleaning! :)

While my choices aren't for everyone on this forum, I figured it'd still be cool to have things documented and share with some people!

O_o Jesus titties!

I actually purchased my FD from Memphis, TN from WolfChase auto. Very nice area, but there is definitely a darker side to that place haha. It's like night/day when you find yourself in those areas. Good luck with the build.

Geez really?

To OP, good luck with the build, my friend has a SC with S366 that's pumping out 800+, but 700rwhp on a light body FD is no joke. BTW, if you want to make profit out of these car you need to return it to stock form, any motor swap will usually turn the buyers away.

Narfle 07-01-13 11:45 AM

Good luck.

LOL, wow your panties are in a bunch aren't they? My comments weren't made to offend anyone or talk down to rotaries, it was more-so a joke. I actually thought hard about putting another 13b or a 20b in this car as well. Next time, I ask you keep your opinions to yourself or, better yet, stay out of my thread with your negativity.

Thanks! Yes, as you said it's night and day for sure! My dad lives not too far from Wolfchase, but I stay in Collierville which is a tad nicer than Wolfchase.

Thanks for the luck! Yes, most buyers out for an RX-7 will shy away from a swapped car. But, for the few who are looking for an LSx FD, they'll usually pay a prettier penny. If I was to LSx it, I wouldn't have mind to sit on it for a little. The FD is one of the most gorgeous cars out to date! haha

Good luck with your build, im here with some support. cant say the same for everyone. I have been building my 2jz fd for years now. It sounds like you have very similar plans to what I originally thought. I cant believe you have gone thru 12 cars all with mods. Im jealous! Lets see the engine!!!

XLR8 07-03-13 10:18 AM

If OP wants to breed a genetic strain of physically superior hamsters, and have them power the car through a complex pulley system.... then who cares. It is his car to do so. The fact that the rotary blew isn't much of a surprise is it? They are more needy, fragile, and mod sensitive to the average unknowing owner. I don't think he was trying to insult anyone.

GL OP, though I would have stayed with the 20B plans for a "mind blowing build", I'm sure you will have fun none the less.

12 cars, a few including Hondas. Some more modded than others, but yes sir! I really look up to your thread as well, it's like my "how-to" lol.

Thank you. Truthfully, I feel the rotary blowing in this car was user error. Had it had been running still when I'd gotten the car, I'd be doing a single turbo build on it. I do plan to own another FD at one point, so that will be 20B for sure!

UPDATE! Sorry, I know I'm about 4 days late on the update but I have done a little work. Sometimes my work hours fall right in the middle of the day and I work from 12-8 or something stupid like that, then I will come home and work on something until I'm dead tired and will just come in the house and fall right asleep lol.

Anyways! Tore down the motor to a long block and it's ready to be cleaned and painted! Today I'll be doing some heavy cleaning on the block and on Monday I should be pulling off the head to take to have hot tanked and cleaned up very good as well! Sending valve covers, upper intake, and lower to powder coaters on Monday, as well. Also, I will be cleaning up a few of the water pipes that got all gunky and make them look as presentable as I can, even if you only see a glimpse of it. My goal is to have an IMMACULATE engine bay, tucked and a little shaven. I'm not a fan of fully shaven bays in anyway, they look fake to me lol. So naturally, the engine being spotless has a lot to do with that! I've also FINALLY decided on a color and Monday I'm going to go ahead and have the spark plug cover for the motor painted that color, so stay tuned for some teasers! ;) I have a picture from before and after with the motor, excuse the garage - I get messy until I'm done for the day then I clean up really, really good. Also, one of the many parts I ordered came in yesterday too! Here's a few pictures I snapped.

When motor first arrived.

Yanked some accessories off and the harness!

And my titan cam gears that came in today, they're fucking gorgeous! I bought one off of a Supra Forums member and the other direct from Titan, saved me about $30 bucks. Not much, but that $30 went to my beer fund for the night, worth it IMO!!

Attachment 667787

Sorry, I slack on the play by plays but I wear rubber gloves and usually when I work, I work and don't think about it. I'll try to get better especally with tonight me cleaning the block and repainting! I also need better lighting in that garage to show the motors true beauty! That's on my to-do list today as well lol. I realize that some of these pictures will look "low quality" because of my bad lighting at night. I'll get better with the updates! Stay tuned as more parts should be rolling on in between Friday and Monday!

protunedperformance 07-05-13 01:38 PM

awesome stuff glad the progress is being made. Thanks for the compliment on my build. If you have any questions, ill see what I can do. What tranny are you going with? Are you going stock motor at first to get it up and running?

Huge HUGE update!

First off, I know I've been slacking on the updates BIG time. But, I've been busy with school and work at the same time as this thing. Few thing's have changed in the plans, to say the least. But what build doesn't change the plans every now and then? hah.

First thing's first - color swap. My bay's painted! I tore down the bay and sanded it down and had a friend come by and paint it the new color I'm painting the car - Grigio Medio. I must say, in person this color is badass and my shitty iPhone 5 or 5s can NOT capture the color in it's full beauty. But I will say it's definitely different in my eyes, and the way it "changes" shade in different lighting is amazing. One thing I couldn't get with about the purple that I had for this car originally is that damn near every cool FD you see is purple. So, decided to be different from the run of the mill and choose this color which I have not seen an FD with this exact color on it. It definitely excites me! The entire car will be stripped and painted this color. Jambs, floor boards, everything. Here's a pic of the bay, as well as a teaser of what it looks like when captured correctly and how it honestly looks in person.

Again, sorry for the terrible iPhone shots.

Attachment 656088

Even had the spark plug cover paint matched! :D

Attachment 656089

What it actually looks like when not captured in a dark garage by a shitty camera:

http://www.mpresiv.net/auto/f458/F45...Mar2011_16.jpg
http://www.mpresiv.net/auto/f458/F45...Mar2011_07.jpg

I also picked up a V160 :) I figured if I was going to make good power, why waste time on a shit R154 trans? So a friend of mine was parting out a super low milage 6 speed TT and I got the trans for what I feel was a pretty good deal. There's a new tripod assembly and billet bushings on the way for that :)

http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/...ps806c5d6e.jpg

I changed turbo's quite a bunch too. I was scammed on the 7175, seller decided he didn't want to ship it of course.. So I decided to jump on a T51R Kai instead. Quickly realizing that my 700 goal would pretty much choke out the T51R, I decided to jump a brand new Precision GT4202 that was for sale.. At this point I realized that I could safely pull out about 800 on c16 or q16 with this turbo, and 5xx on 93. So my goal was raised from 700 whp to 800 whp on "kill".

Attachment 656090

Said turbo has been shipped out, this morning actually. In favor of a GREAT deal I got on a 7275. :) With that said, my new goals are 850-900 whp on stock bottom end and race fuel LOL. I'm really going to push the envelope with this. ProEFI will now be the EMS of my choice as I'll be taking advantage of a black friday sale on it! I've also re-gasketed the ENTIRE motor with the OEM gasket kit, as well as bought a new OEM oil pump, OEM water pump, power steering pump, etc. I feel the motor will be a new motor pretty much. The pistons look great and it was a great compression motor. Here's a shot I caught of it as I was in the middle cleaning off the old head gasket material. Unfortunately, I have a major problem of doing work and once I get in a working stage, I sometimes forget to take a picture of the finished product. It did get significantly cleaner than this though..

The head's also a built head now. I drove the head up to a friend of mine in Nashville, TN who gave it a good cleaning, 3 angle valve job, put new Supertech springs and retainers in, cleaned the OEM valves, and put GSC seals in to match my GSC S2's! After reading a bunch, I decided there was no point in me giving the head a port as I wouldn't be going into 4 digit territory and if I did it'd be getting a built bottom end to match it. Here's a pic I uploaded to instagram of the head and turbo.

As for the body, I decided to go against the "FEED" widebody and keep it stock body. While the FEED kit is a gorgeous kit, it's on every "baller" FD build I see now a days. Very few are staying stock body anymore and the more I look at the stock body, the more I fall in love with it. The stock body is so timeless, it's ridiculous. I can't bring myself to cut it up. BUT, I am going to go with new HWL headlights, 99 front bumper paired with some fairly rare signal lamps for the car. One pet peeve of mine are poorly rolled/pulled fenders, which are on my car up front. New fenders are in my attic and I have not put them on yet until I'm done with the motor install.

I picked up the Tech 2 kit from a guy who abandoned his project. My kit is only the subframe and the trans mount which is sadly for an R154. I will be having a custom bracket made for the V160, but not by choice. Tech 2 has been atrocious with their customer service and helping me out with the parts. I called and inquired about having a v160 mount made and because I didn't buy the kit "new", they chose not to help me out or take my money. Therefore, I'm using a samburg rear diff brace and having driveshaft shop make me a driveshaft to hold my power as well. Here's a picture of the "kit", which I did have reinforced.

Attachment 656085

The subframe will be installed this weekend as well, motor in next week :)

I also changed the interior from red to black (although I'm still looking for a mint pair black door panels at the moment) and ditched the stock red seats for some Bride Zeta III's with the Gradiation pattern. I also plan to put a 4 point cage in it that will be either white or paint matched and install some black takata harnesses with the seats as well. Here's the interior, excuse the red door panels, still looking for some black ones lol.

Attachment 656086

The Zeta 3's

Attachment 656087

I've pretty much gotten everything ready to install! I will be putting the subframe in this week and hopefully the motor in within the next week or two. After the motor's installed the car will be towed to my friends house who's a great fabricator and have the exhaust and intercooler piping made, as well as my fuel system run. I have two AEM fuel pumps, and about 30 feet of -6 stainless steel hose for the fuel system. There will be 2 -6 feeds, one coming off of each pump, and one -6 return. The downpipe all the way back will be 4 inches in diameter with the wastegate recirculated, also all vbanded (if that's even a word). I haven't decided if I'm going to go straight pipe with it yet or put a muffler on. ProEFI and my custom harness will be ordered next week as well, as my last pay checks have went to Christmas gifts LOL. I've also got wheels in the mail and some big plans for those as well!

Stay tuned and stay safe everyone! I'll be a little better with the updates as well, I promise! lol.

Ugh I like those seats but don't fit in them.........

Project88Turbo 11-22-13 07:57 AM

I really like where this thread is going. The level of detail and quality of parts is fantastic.

Question:

What are you doing as far as the rear end is concerned? The stock rear will not hold anything close to your predicted power level. Most people end up with the Cobra IRS.

Keep up the good work!

Vince

ooooooh sweet jeezuz this is a cool build I really like the grey. what are you building this car for? track, auto x, drag, or just something sweet to cruze in?

Status racing makes a great seat for any size person and they should have a few options that'd fit in FD's by now!

Thank you, I really appreciate the compliment! While the stock rear will not hold my power goals, I will not be swapping to the Ford 8.8 rear. I plan on getting driveshaft shop's beefed up axles (300M I believe) and a kaaz rear differential along with the Greddy rear diff cover. I will likely not do a lot of drag racing but if I do, it won't be with hard launches. I do plan to maybe track the car on a few road courses on the 93 octane map. The suspension will be beefed up a tad as well, new power flex bushings all around, coilovers, brakes, etc.

Project88Turbo 11-22-13 11:49 AM

While your plan is great concerning the rear, you would be better served to swap since it is so much stronger. I'd hate to see you spend all that money and the rear end explode :)

Look at one of the threads here in this section, it is a digi-camo v8 car and his 'sploded :)

I'd assume that your engine choice would ideally have more torque than a 2 rotor, closer to a v8's torque level. That I believe is what kills them more than anything else.

Driveshaft shop makes the swap axles for it, and samberg makes the subframe. (you could almost buy the subframe for the cost of the KAAZ and the Greddy cover).

In any case: Keep up the good work, it's going to be amazing no matter what you end up doing!

Vince

I really appreciate it Vince! I'll look more into it and see what the cost is as well as the pros and cons of each choice within this upcoming week or two. :icon_tup:

Not too much new today, the new hotness came in.. my new turbo! :D

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5510/1...3164191b_b.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7387/1...0a5a6e9a_b.jpg

It's a Precision 7275 turbo. I had the opportunity to jump on a great deal and after looking more into it, I feel I made the right choice. While it does not have the more intimidating "large frame" of my GT4202, this turbo will spool a little better while making more power and should actually hold the boost a little better throughout the power band. Fingers crossed with this thing I'm hoping to push 9xx whp on C16 or Q16 (depending on tuners preference) and roughly 550ish on 93 octane. I feel that goal is more than realistic and should easily be reachable with the combination of ProEFI and my head work, only time will tell!

901jay 11-28-13 02:05 AM

Not much has been going on this week.. I've been pretty damn busy unfortunately. I have installed the subframe and it went in like a champ! Perfect fitment I'd say so far.. Until I put the motor in we will really see what it's like. Here's just a basic shot:

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3754/1...2f46ff5b_b.jpg

While the control arms and things are out, I'll be replacing EVERY bushing and ball joint I possibly can. All of that will be a safety thing for me. Definitely can't do 60-160 pulls with busted up suspension pieces. All ball joints, boots, and tie rods will be OEM Mazda and the bushings are powerflex. I've also got some project mu pads, ARP wheel studs, and new rotors coming in ass well. It's ALL getting replaced! I'll be ready to rock in roll at the TX2K roll race event :P

Oh! I also picked up my side project.. My new Wheels!

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3829/1...4dc9953a_b.jpg

Work Equips are one of my all time favorite wheels, and isn't really a set that I feel is over done on the FD chassis (VSXX's, TE's, XD9's, no offense as all you guys cars are still sexy). These have 17 inch faces and will be step lipped to 18 inches with all new inner barrels, outer barrels, and new hardware as well. They'll also will finished in a custom finish. It'll definitely be a hate it or love it styled set of wheesl. The wheels will also be built by good ol' me as well so stick around for that if you're into wheel porn!

silvernotch 11-28-13 06:58 PM

Thank you as well! There's an FD running around with a similar color as to mine but I believe his is off of a Lamborghini... & at the risk of sounding like a tool I'm thinking about painting mine a completely different color simply because of his and I'm sure he painted it that color for the same reason I chose mine.. to be different

Anywho, I finally finished putting the motor together give or take a few things. I'm waiting on billet pulleys that are on backorder, my harness, all new accessories (alt, ps pump, and a/c compressor) and still waiting on a TRD mount for my trans. After the trans mount is here I'll FINALLY be installing the motor and trans. I've decided to go with a tucked radiator as well! Here's a couple of pictures I snapped as I was putting the motor back together. It's on the cherry picker because I was moving it around the garage haha. Excuse the mess!

Putting on new oil pump and timing gear and before the cams

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7452/1...cd9a066d_b.jpg

Now with the GSC S2 Cams in and the billet timing tensioner on..

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5479/1...956f47fa_b.jpg

Finally with the turbo on and the water neck (out for modding) and belt tensioner (part of the pulley kit) missing.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7406/1...e0080a02_b.jpg

Annnnnd finally, I changed all the control arm boots, and tie rod ends with OEM parts from my local Mazda. Of course, didn't snap pictures besides this crappy one LOL

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5476/1...8acc3a86_b.jpg

Hopefully rebuilding the brake calipers this week and getting all new rotors for the time being with some project mu pads. Closer and closer, wait times for shops suck! lol

Be safe everyone :icon_tup:

Actually I'm pretty sure that car was vinyl wrapped; if it wasn't then there was some serious paint wrinkling issues and lines on the front bumper. So therefor stay with that color but with paint!! lol.

Amazing work so far, this is really going to shine when finished! I applaud you're sticking with JDM and being different rather than the common redneck LSX.
