New Owner, New Goals, reliability FD build
Ok guys,
My name is Christian and I am a Self proclaimed gear head. My whole family has been Honda owners and I have been to. I still have my first car (93 del sol) and its been through hell and back again. I am such a Honda head that I actually am a Sales & Finance Manager for a Honda Dealer here in Austin Texas. Even with VTEC running through my veins I could not control the Cuban and Puerto Rican urge to get an FD. I loved the body as a kid and continued to this day to gawk at it any time I saw one. Let go back 4 years. I lived in Tampa Florida (school @ USF) and my search started there. I would flip acuras and Hondas to make some extra cash and thats when I decided to start my hunt for a 93 MB Touring. It HAD to be all 3. The First year of the first sequential setup in a production car with no other color than that beautiful Montego Blue. 1 owner, unmolested, Less Than 80k. Less than $14,000. That was the tuff one. when I had the Money, NOTHING was out there that fit. When I was broke, found a few. This continued from 2010-2014. On 2-15-13 I had my beautiful daughter Ava. Wouldn't change a thing. A few weeks later my Fiance encourged me to sell a few of the cars I had and really hunt my 93 MB down so that I would be forever done toy car shopping. I obliged. Months went by that nothing came up and I just told my self "F^#k it! I'm done". the FD will never be. that was in Febuary right after my daughters 1st Bday. My Magical day was March 5th. I was off and sitting with my daughter when I received a text from a coworker- "come check out this trade in! its some rare Mazda". I immediately replied "I'm at home, pics ASAP". and the pic with specs came through. 1993 Mazda RX-7 77k miles Montego Blue 5spd Touring ONE OWNER- STOCK! I went from 6 to midnight immediately and said " I want the owners info and the sales reps info" It belonged to a 68 yr old woman who bought it new who also owned a 1986 rx-7 that she still has! our trade evaluator would not put a number on it and told her "ma'am, it is a beautiful can, but I can't put a number on it, you will get more private sale". So I called her and scooped it up! All service records came with it as well as the Monroney label. so without further adieu, My 7. http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...s422b801b.jpeg First thing was to monitor a few crucials so I picked up a boost gauge and the innovate o2. mounting was done with the ATI dual pod http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...s968bba21.jpeg http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...s2d85e821.jpeg http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...s52a17cac.jpeg http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...sbaaf8b14.jpeg Next was to oblige my fiance by getting a back seat in it for our daughter in the furture. I scooped up a torn JDM red seat for a good price had recovered it in black vinyl http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...pslwxzjpb8.jpg http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...s15be2975.jpeg http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...s40035b2e.jpeg |

Everything was coming together then...
THIS: http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...pse46ac049.jpg AND THIS: http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps28257d42.jpg The worst part about the busted AST is that I had my Pettit Racing one sitting in the trunk for about 2 weeks and never installed it  As for the headlight cover, I picked one up locally with a painted CF hood for uber cheap and had the guys at the dealership spray it for me. The ONLY reason I got the hood is for ventilation and I've read that it is considered a reliability mod. Hood: http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...psscbno3up.jpg It needed the mesh inserts so off to Lowes I went! http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...psf4flgkdo.jpg http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...psswlcgea0.jpg http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...psy2uwolyl.jpg http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...psnn7zofi8.jpg Attachment 642913 http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...psuubnnqz8.jpg Next up!!! COOLING! http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps1qanjqso.jpg AND WORKING ON GIVING HER SOME NEW SHOES! http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...psxks2n82l.jpg |
looking good so far. Good find on the car.

ATX-RX, after helping a friend and doing a lot of research on aerodynamics (hood vents and NACA ducts in particular) i feel the need to recommend you remove that screen mesh from your vents (or at least change to a much less dense mesh) as the mesh will severely restrict airflow and make the vents almost useless unless you are sitting still. the mesh you used is much too dense and appears to be blocking at least 50% of the opening in the vent.
|
^ you are so wise.
Looking good OP and congrats. |

So I've left the car alone to research more about what I want and what it needs. I have an appointment to drop Moody Blue at rotary performance and have it worked over. They will be checking my compression to see if it needs a rebuild and if not, it will be getting a new downpipe and tuned on the pfc I picked up here on the forum. I also made a decision on what exhaust I want and it's going to take a month or 2 to build before I can say it's mine... As for all the parts from before? They are in and the new shoes are on! However my other headlight cover flew off yesterday :-/

Love the new shoes :icon_tup:
|
Like the new wheels. Love Nardi steering wheels. Cant wait to swap mine stock one out.
|
Thanks guys! I need to get the wheel on, and take it to get tuned!!!!
|
Mini Update, I finally locked in an appointment to take My FD to Rotary Performance in Garland Tx. I can't express enough gratitude for Mary, Chris , and Arnie. These 3 are unbelievably Helpful and even though I expressed that I wanted a rebuild Chris responded with:
"Ok, that shouldn't be a problem, But I would like to see if it even needs a rebuild. If compression is still good, then why don't we clean her up, fix what needs to be fixed, and have money left over." Unbelievable customer service. When a shop can easily have you spend 6-7k, but prefers you to be reasonable and prevent you spending an unnecessary amount, that's great. Remarkable even. My FD goes to them tomorrow morning, If compression sucks, I will: Rebuild install new Radiator and hoses Silicone vacuum lines fuel filter PFC tune If I don't need the rebuild: radiator and hoses filter fuel pump Bonez DP and Midpipe vacuum lines and PFC tune. I would also like to ask anyone who has read this much and gone this far, should I go with Simplified sequential, or non sequential? please let me know what you think and any questions that I should ask while I'm there!!! |
Nice buy and build so far! I've gotten a couple parts from Rotary Performance and they are really cool to do business with. Also I would just keep the non sequential, and then eventually upgrade to a single turbo, or go BNR's when the money is available. I'm thinking of going to UT so maybe I will get to see this car in person one day. Good luck with the build.
|
If u just plan on just driving it around town and somewhat mechanical inclined I would go with simplefied sequential.
|
Big single ASAP!
|
Stick with sequential twins till you are ready for single, there's no point on going non-seq IMO.
|
Non sequential it is!
As for the parts installed along with rebuild: -Bonez DP and mid pipe -Reinhard dual barrel titanium axle back. (The company said I was the second guy to order this in the U.S (Grand mighty was first)) -Fuel pump -fuel filter -Simplified sequential with silicone lines -PFC -radiator and hoses -coolant overflow tank -re looming of the harness (if they do it) I really want a reliable 325-350 whp so I'm hoping this can get me close!!! And any input is appreciated! |
The 7 is official undergoing surgery at the hands of the proffessionals at rotary performance. I'm excited and nervous all at the same time. I've budgeted for a rebuild, but I would love to have the phone call say " Compression is good, let's install everything else."
Fingers crossed... |
Verdict is in. It needs the rebuild. So I'm pulling the trigger and saying "Go at it!"
It also will be receiving silicone hose EVERYTHING RP fuel Pump RP fuel filter Staying sequential but simplified Radiator Bonez DP Bonez Mid pipe w/ hi-flow Cat Rienhard axle back Apexi PFC Possibly larger injectors. I'm looking for 350 whp, let me know if you guys think its possible with this setup. keep in mind I have the Pettit duct, larger SMIC as well as the Apexi intakes. |
Your possible setup looks good but you may want to upgrade your secondary injectors so you're not running over 80% on the stock ones.
A lot of people will say you can run that stock ones to damn near static (100%) with no problems, but that doesn't exactly give me the warm and fuzzy. I have the same power goals as you so I upgraded to 1300cc secondaries. You may be hitting the limit on the stock twins though. That's why I opted for the BNRs. If you're going to try and run 15psi on the stockers, you're going to significantly shorten their life and run into compressor inefficiency. Glad you decided to stay sequential. It's a complicated system but when it's working, there is nothing like it. |

I really wanted to open up the bubble wrap, but I'm shipping it out to RP today so I thought it would be best to let it be. |

That's pretty much the same as what I have, except that I'm running EV14 2000 with FFE secondary rail. My car made 355rwhp/308rwtq at 1bar, max injector duty cycle was below 70%, I then set the boost at solid 14 and it's a blast to drive.
