My Garage Built 93 :p

Hello all!

I finally decided to get around to start a build thread on my FD. I have had it for a while now and honestly haven't had much done to it. At least I think I haven't lol.

I figured I would just start this thread to see exactly how long it'll take me to actually get it done ().

A little about me...
I am a father of two beautiful children and am on the home stretch to become a lawyer. Only like a year left until I graduate law school yay:lol:

For the past four or so years I have been selling Rx7 Parts to make a living (mainly 2nd gen parts). I quit my job back in 2012 to focus on my schooling and because I am a full-time law student, I rely solely on selling parts/cars to make my living (actually I believe the ABA lifted the ban on working more than 20hrs:scratch:).

Anyways, I picked up my FD from a friend of mine a short while back.
A little about the car:
Year: 1993
Make: Mazda
Model: Rx7 (base)
Color: Silver
Title: Clean
Miles: 10x,xxx

I bought the car with the understanding it would only start occasionally and would not register boost.

The mods that were done to the 7 were as follows:
RacingBeat dual tip DP back exhaust,
drilled/slotted rotors,
HKS ignition system,
2 Way Security System,
lowering springs?,
double-din touch screen dvd player,
battery relocated to the rear bins,
DEFI D series boost gauge,
Turbosmart manual boost controller,
ABS delete kit

I think that is about it...

I bought it with the intention of just getting it running good and be able to drive it. Basically simplify it make it reliable (as I am sure all rx7 owners want to do lol).

That didn't last long as you will see I changed my mind about building this beast lol

The night I first brought her home (yeah I drove it on the trailer

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a3...D550/ry%3D400/

Drove her off the trailer into the garage
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a3...D550/ry%3D400/

Started taking pics of everything it had lol

Yeah PO decided to relocated the battery using monster cable

Ill Keep on updating this lol give me a sec

Broke_A_Baller 11-30-14 10:13 PM

Then I started looking more into things and started to find lovely wiring
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a3...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a3...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a3...D550/ry%3D400/

Morning after I got her
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a3...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a3...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a3...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

SOOOO...I decided to start with checking all wiring and thought it was a good idea to delete emissions lol

probably a bad idea on my end as when I moved the rats nest the lovely "plastic" hoses broke along with several of the sensors.

Anyways...During my parts ordering epidemic I order a few parts from fellow members on this forum...
1) R1 Lip & Strut bar (which I no longer believe I can use for the route I am going)
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

Going to continue to update!!!

Broke_A_Baller 11-30-14 10:17 PM

"JDM" fd front end conversion on my daughters power wheels
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

Random Parts shots I ordered:Keep in mind these pics are over a year old lol I'm trying to get caught up!
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

SO anyways...

A pic of those lovely rats nest crap I encountered:
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

AND MORE BROKEN CRAP!!!

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

But managed to get the rats nest out lol
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

THEN I thought it would be a good idea to remove the motor lol (do not ask me why I did this...at that time I do not know what I was thinking)
SO needless to say I started removing crap off of the engine
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

Broke_A_Baller 11-30-14 10:24 PM

FUNNY PIC!!!
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

ANyways...

decided to pull the motor as I was saying...when I pulled the fenders I found out why the car wouldn't start all the time.

First, the starter harness was hacked to hell.
Second, the lovely charge harness that runs on the driver side fender decided to start rubbing against the tire. Thanks Mazda for being retarded and using plastic clips to hold on such an important part lol

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

How do you like that lovely RED wire for the starter harness? lol
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

Since the engine was out, I decided to use a manual rack from my long gone 87 T2 I had laying around.
Had to fab some mounting brackets and use different outer tie rod ends, but it worked great and cleaned up the bay quite well!
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

So as the motor was out I was deciding what to do.

I figured I would start with figuring out what the hell the PO did with the interior wiring
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

Then decided to test fit some of my gauges lol
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

More pics coming shortly.....

Broke_A_Baller 11-30-14 10:29 PM

SO after all sorts of random crap went on I decided to put the motor back in
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

and it was in yay
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

rails I got from a fellow member on here, but ultimately sold on eBay since there was fitment issues for me
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

Front rebar cut for that front mount I had...
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

Pushed her outside to see daylight...
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

test fitted the big garrett gt4088r (I am selling this now lol)
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

Then as I go inside to check something a friend of mine thought it would be cute to put my old s5 turbo on lol
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

Broke_A_Baller 11-30-14 10:43 PM

I decided to work on the interior as I wanted a spare dash, I wanted to get some "rare" parts and I wanted to change things up a little bit.

Painted the steering column
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

another random pic
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

the "rare" parts lol
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

Oh decided to sell the black carpet and get some porno carpet for the ladies now that I can lay the back seat down and make a bed:egrin:
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

So now after a long long time of indecisiveness, and wanted to go single turbo, buying all sorts of parts....I once again changed my mind..
http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

Yes I pulled my motor once again...:(

I sold both sets of irons to help fund the build I am currently doing.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

How she looked prior to removing her parts yet again lol

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

Many of my parts from my rew motor and spare rew are still left.

I bought a T2 a month ago, sold it last week to buy a motor...:egrin:

What will the future of my silver beauty bring?

ONLY TIME WILL TELL!!! mUAHAHAHAHAHAH

but seriously...

Plans...
Take everything off of my FD
Prep my steering parts, control arms, etc. for powdercoating (as some saw in my old FC build)
Redo all my bushings/bearings/etc.
New steering arms,
new suspension,
install my clutch t2 diff/ring/pinion into my fd rear,
Get my parts from defined auto (hopefully logan gets them to me lol)
order more parts from Elliot
take my car to the blasters
pray my cousin will pick up my car with a enclosed trailer
then get ready for the future of the rotary world!!!!

Stay tuned I will update as soon as I get things done!!:icon_tup:

Spalato 12-01-14 12:21 AM

Thanks!

I too enjoy the silver on an FD. Though the color on mine might be changing slightly in the future.

Looking good bud!

It sounds like you have been on the forum and looking at build threads too much! I did the same thing! Lol I just wanted a well sorted sequential FD and then build threads changed my life! I went to a to4r, a 40r, a 35r, and now a new street ported motor so back to ns twins to fund the motor. Now saving up for an EFR. My name is michael, and I have a problem. Lmao

Hahahha! I blame several of the well known members on here with their builds....dam you all!

But yeah....

I changed from sequential to single to...well you'll see soon enough lol!

Hi Michael! My name is Nick and I too have a problem!

I should change the name of this build to: "builders anonymous. The rehab for rotary junkies" lol

^^^ hahaha :D I think we all feel your pain.

I really like the black interior with the red carpets, it definitely gives the desired "porno" look lol.

silver_7 12-01-14 03:21 PM

Looking forward to seeing the rest of your build. So far I think I have talked myself into sticking with the twins, but still get the itch from time to time after looking at the build threads and my friends car. Too many choices....lol

that steering column painting pic looks really familiar......

Attachment 634696

it's so true though, we do need a car building anonymous meeting, lolz.

it looks good though.

Is that red carpet OEM? it seems to fit very well (from what little I can see)

Turblown 12-01-14 04:07 PM

I know what you are doing, should I spill beans? J/K

I got that itch....and now it has taken me into a crazy spiral. However, I am not sure if it is a downward spiral or upward spiral, BUT I do know I am having fun with all of these options:lol:

Where do you think I got the idea to paint the column:wave::nod::ylsuper:
Thanks BTW!

Also, the carpet is NOT OEM. It is the aftermarket one that a majority of the members use to replace the OEM one. I decided to go with an aftermarket carpet for two reasons:
1) I have rear seats and the OEM US carpet leaves holes because of this (I think it looks tacky to have random holes in the carpet lol); and
2) I could not find a OEM red carpet for under $500:(

This carpet cost around $200 with the thicker back. It is an annoying process to get things fit in, but it looks alright. I will get more detailed pics of it once I have some more time off from parenthood lol

NOOOOO.... LOL.....Well, once I start ordering parts from ya and you start fabricating then yes

Things are looking up for the build. My expensive early X-Mas gift to myself should be here in a week or two

Note to other members that have to get part buys ok'd from his/her spouse....ALWAYS DEFLATE THE PRICE OR ALTERNATIVELY PRETEND YOU TRADED SOMETHING FOR IT (because after all you technically did right?)

I will get some more pics soon...

Not a lot planned for this week. Just going to clean the garage and try to organize the garage as best as I can. I will be putting the 7 on stands sometime this week.

Stay Tuned and thanks for the input my fellow builders anonymous members

12/15/14 Update

Hello all!

Well after many days of not doing anything waiting for this dang piece of art to arrive (), I have yet to really do much of anything...

I have two finals remaining before I can really focus on cleaning parts up (for sale) and organize the rest of my garage. Then of course preparing the FD for some work.

I picked some temporary front oem seats up from another member about a week ago so I could finish my floor carpet (for where the rest of the bolts go).

Did that in about an hour.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

Looks ok. At least it matches my rear leather seats .

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

I cannot help but feel empty every time I take a look in the bay...
For the past year the FD has had a motor in then out, then in, then out again.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/

After looking at my 87 T2 manual rack and the dirtiness of my bay, I have decided to redo my entire steering and suspension set-up. Will do like I always do to my parts and have whatever I can powdercoated.

As well as looking at how dumb this front harness is. I've read many posts and threads on wire-tucking this, but I have yet a great way to do this without spending $$$$$ on a completely new harness kit.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4...D550/ry%3D400/
(yes my snow blower is in the pic :p and thankfully I have yet to use it this year!!!)

Does anyone have any other suggestions about wire-tucking an FD?

Anywho, with my last final this upcoming Wednesday, I am looking forward to my winter break.

Thanks for looking and stay tuned! :icon_tup:

I pulled my body harness out and then shrunk it by 6' and put it under my dash... I also didnt have Hvac stuff.. What you could do is pull it out and then flip it and put it in your rear bins and then re terminate all the ends... Either way its a pita

I have rear seats. How did you go about picking size of wires you ran? I'm afraid of not having the proper gauge then starting a fire because I should have possibly increased the gauge size instead of keeping it the same. Ahah

We really only need wires running to Headlights, Horn, and Fans correct?

I'll look into it once I am finished with my final on Wednesday.

shawnm565 12-16-14 10:47 AM

That's exactly what I ran into the front and I also ran it in the the frame going to the front so I didn't have any wires going up front.

Awesome. Thanks! So realistically I shouldn't have to worry about exceeding the wires capability if it's simply just the afore mentioned accessories I'll be running then.

I'm planning on ordering a bunch of parts in the near future. Just need to organize my garage and prep the fd.

ONE day left until law school break yayyyy lol

Broke_A_Baller 12-20-14 06:11 PM

Not much of an update. The part I've been waiting for should be here by Tuesday the latest!

Super excited!!! I'll have my fd up on stands by that time so I can start prepping the suspension parts :).

Once it's here I'll post a few questions that I have about the route im planning on going. However, at this time I don't want to ask it as it'll give away my top secret part :-p.

Stay tuned!

needspartsnow 01-01-15 05:13 PM

Nice work Nick. It's hilarious how bare your shelves/garage look in the early pictures compared to how it looks now.

Ahhaha yeah. I still have parts at my grandparents house I need to bring over!!!

Thanks!

I'll post an update tomorrow when I'm not being lazy. It's a pretty big step for the build. By far the most expensive part I'll need to get for it (I think :-p).

jacobcartmill 01-01-15 07:20 PM

why is everyone with a build thread removing the ABS from their FD?

archaphil 01-02-15 06:10 PM

you didnt post the pic yet? shiiiiiiit I should just post it to spite you. har har.
