So after owning my FD since 2007 I finally got the balls to take it on track last summer. Luckily for me several circuits are close by and I managed to get myself booked in on the Silverstone International circuit.
Attachment 617167 Attachment 617169 Attachment 617171 Attachment 617173 I managed to squeeze in around 50 laps of the circuit during the day (approx 8 lap stints with a cool down lap). I really enjoyed it and had a great day, which was good as I was using the day as justification to spending more money on the car! One of the big problems I had on the day was down to inlet air temps which were over 60 degrees most of the time. Water seemed to stay stable at around 90 degrees and oil temps rose to 110 degrees before I took it for cool down laps and pitted. So I have decided to do something to improve temps and have more fun and longer stints on track this summer. I placed a few big orders in August last year and started to strip the car down. |

So first off was to remove some of the interior (easy gain) so out came rear plastics, spare wheel, tool kit, stereo, rear bins etc.
Attachment 617159 Attachment 617161 Attachment 617163 Then I purchased a spare engine for Oldone to Street Port and a Garrett T04R turbo with HKS cast manifold. Attachment 617165 |

Looks like fun. Any brake upgrades?
How are you going to handle the higher air intake temps? |

I had placed orders with Newera Imports and DM-Motorsports for several parts and decided while the weather was nice to start stripping the engine components from the car (space is a little tight in our garage as the wife's FD is in there too).
Attachment 617143 Attachment 617145 So this is where it is going to rest for a while:- Attachment 617147 So this is how it all looks now:- Attachment 617149 |

So just before Christmas a couple of big deliveries came in first from Japan:-
Koyo 3 core copper radiator: Attachment 617133 FEED Large Throttle Body Attachment 617135 FEED Tow Hooks Attachment 617137 OS Giken triple plate clutch Attachment 617139 Push Pull Converter Attachment 617141 |

Also had the HKS Type R Vmount kit
Attachment 617125 Attachment 617127 Attachment 617129 Attachment 617131 Kit seems great and has everything you need to get it all fitted, all parts are stamped with I.D numbers so even going from Japanese instructions looks fairly easy (fingers crossed). |

Also picked up the Sakebomb Garage EWP kit:-
Attachment 617113 Attachment 617115 Greddy Profec Boost Controller Attachment 617117 AST delete tank Attachment 617119 Chip Motorsport Large Brake Master Cylinder Attachment 617121 Also a set of AP 6 pot calipers and large discs Attachment 617123 |

And from DM Motorsports:-
Engine Strengthening plate Attachment 617096 AEM coils, Fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump Attachment 617098 Primary/Secondary Fuel Rails, Injectors, Coil relocation plate, Gear stick bush Attachment 617100 Pully Kit and Turbo inlet surround (incase I add W/I) Attachment 617102 Slam Panel plate Attachment 617104 |

I have also tidied up the engine loom a little and removed all unused plugs:-
Attachment 617092 And relocated the front relay box to sit under the Cwest Headlights (passenger side) Attachment 617094 So now it's a case of putting it all together when the engine is ready (and the weather is drier and a little warmer). I have just ordered a 19 row oil cooler kit to help keep things a little cooler on that side too. Will try to keep updates coming through as and when things move forward. Cheers |
nice mods and neat spot for the relay box, will have to look into that for mine.

Wow, you don't mess around! All seem to be geared towards solving the issues and keeping oil, air and coolant temps under control on track. Those brakes are impressive as well.
That brake master cyl is a nice piece and should be a nice match with the larger brakes. Did you buy the brakes as a kit or having them custom adapted? I will be following your build. Very nicely done. |
definitely in for progress pics! love where this is going.
|
What tracks do you like to go to? Snetterton is the closest to me and it is rather enjoyable.
|
This is awesome! what a parts list!
Who makes that slam panel plate? DM as well? I've never seen that piece before, what is the benefit over running the stock rad support w/ modified bumper support? |
subbed, very interested in knowing more about the slam panel particularly where the bumper cover secures. I would imagine it fits the same way as the factory support but would still like to see additional images. Very nice looking build you have going on!
|
Thanks for kind comments!
As you can imagine I have been saving for this for quite some time! AP brake kit is specific for the FD ( purchased second hand and really need new discs purchasing). The slam panel is from DM Motorsport, advantages are it's removable for easier access when working in engine bay. Also has larger clean area for improved air to rad and ic. Bonnet latch attaches in same position. Will post pics once attached and permanently fitted. |

I guess the panel is likely lighter than the stock rad/bumper support too? It seems most of it would be hidden behind the bumper though? (say for the small slit in the FEED bumper) So I can't see the rad or IC coming across much more airflow(but I've been wrong before), keep us posted with temps (air/water) if you log them! |
Subbed!
This is going to be good! "Pulls up chair with soda and popcorn" |
Where'd you get the AST Delete tank?
|
Got AST Delete tank from here:-
Mazda RX7 AST Delete coolant tank | TopGear Stockport / TGS Tuning & Fabrication Staples323 - Only been around Silverstone (so far) as its about 25mins away. Donnington/Mallory and Rockingham are all within an hours drive too. And luckily for the Wife Santapod is only 40mins away too! |
Amazing parts list, so jealous!!!
|
Awesome build bud.\
Are alot of FD and 13b parts available in UK or did you mainly import them? |

So things have been a little slow recently as the weather isn't great and when working on the car I am outside (rain stops play). I have managed a few little jobs such as spray radiator brackets and get them fitted to the rad, also modified one of the side plate brackets to all fitment of the FEED Tow Eye.

The Radiator pipe sits a little too close to the Tow Eye, so that will need to be modified (move forward 60mm and in around 10mm). So i will need to order a little material for that and may get some Ally sheet too for some ducting.
Attachment 615742 Also managed to spend a little more money on some Carbon Fibre door cards:- Attachment 615744 Sure the misses will want these off me when she see's them so I will have to be a bit sneaky when they arrive and hide them pretty quickly. |
