Wow! What a gorgeous car! We need more pics!

You clearly spared no expense and went the extra mile on everything. That ride will be a treat for a long time to come.

What are you plans for the future of the car?

Thanks for the support! Right now my only plans are to get the thing running before the snow flies.......I will explain shortly....

Update

It has been some time since I last updated the thread....I expect most of you are wondering where all the photos of the car posing around the province are.......

...well unfortunately the project hit some delays :(

When we finally thought the car was ready to run on the dyno we hit some electrical gremlins. After a day of trouble shooting and to everyone's frustration; the issue turned out to be the super fancy (and super expensive) Antigravity Lithium Battery.

We have now switched to an Optima Red Top as it fits nicely in my battery box. I am currently working with Antigravity to come to a fair refund for the issue. I will keep you all posted on how that works out. So far they seem to be being helpful.......

Once the electrical issue was resolved the guys bedded in the motor. Everything was looking good......

However when we got to the tuning runs and started a pull at 13lb this happened:

Crap!

So the turbine shaft snapped......unfortunately a risk with 20+ year old turbos strapped to a brand new aggressively ported motor....

....my already over spent budget did not need that....:(

Redbul 07-28-17 04:44 PM

I saw today that rx7.com is advertising that they have some nos 280 hp stock twins for sale.

Meanwhile I have eight cast away twins that we have been cobbling together temporary solutions from.

jj_calvin 07-30-17 08:46 PM

That sucks! Sorry to hear that about your turbo. If it's any consolation, I had the exact same thing with my twins. Cracked and broken turbine fins and tons of shaft play. I just swapped them out for a newer pair.

Hope you can get it resolved quickly and that there aren't anymore expensive surprises.

Yeah that's the kicker, the turbo's looked great with minimal shaft play when we pulled the block. Bad luck I guess....

I am also hoping for no more expensive surprises......I am hoping the tranny doesn't decide to join the party next......but I did have the rear diff changed to a 4.44 so that should reduce strain on the tranny and reduce the risk of it having issues....fingers crossed!

Those 280 hp twins would be great. Call Ari.

Thanks for the heads up guys! :icon_tup:

The 280hp twins would be wicked, but money s getting a little tight now.

I actually managed to secure NOS "regular" turbos for a really good price so I am going that route. Maybe in the future I will upgrade to the 280hp twins.

The dyno runs prior to the turbo dying indicated we might hit 400rwhp as it stands so I think I will be happy regardless!

I love the car, I love the build and I love your enthusiasm. But it's amazing how quickly $1000 goes from nothing to money getting tight.

These cars are death by 1000 cuts. Tread carefully.

Good luck with everything. :icon_tup:

Yes you summed it up perfectly!

The killer is more how the spending has been compressed into such a short time frame rather than the actual total spent.

Basically my 5 year spending plan was reduced to 8 weeks...you can imagine that stings somewhat....especially when I have yet to even drive the car!

The build will continue and I will get the car to the standard I envisaged!

Thanks for all the support!

YES! Totally, I know that feeling / experience very well.

Just remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint! :)

Brand New OEM Turbos

So as mentioned I decided to stick with the twins and thanks to an awesome member of our forum I was able to secure a brand new set of OEM turbos :icon_tup:

For anyone wondering; prior to deciding to stick with the twins I had several long conversations with the guys at the shop. We priced out options from used turbos right through to various single turbo conversions.

Obviously price was a big factor but it was Markos advice to “remember what your goal was when you started the build” that made the decision.

Back at the engine build stage when we were discussing porting Marko asked me what I wanted from the car, my response was that horsepower was not a priority; I wanted acceleration that would make the car fun through turns and up and over hills. In essence, a “canyon carver”.

Based on that the decision was to pair an aggressive street port with parallel twin turbos for fast spooling. So when the turbo died, the correct path forwards for me was to replace the twins with another set of twins!

Obviously upgrading to the 280 hp twins would have been a really nice option at this point. However funds are getting a bit slim and the “regular” twins I purchased were a really good deal.

Maybe one day I will upgrade, but the initial dyno runs already looked promising that I will have more than enough power!

Thanking Redbul!

So I would like to take an opportunity to say a huge thank you to Redbul

We met on 7's Day at ForceFed and have been in touch since. After hearing about my turbo woes he was super supportive and made suggestions for replacement units.

He then went above and beyond to help me out - he has very kindly been back and forth to ForceFed collecting the parts as they got pulled off my car and has used his many contacts to sell them.

I really don't know what to say other than THANK YOU!!!! :icon_tup:

I live in a pretty remote area so i truly appreciate the help shifting those parts. It really does show how great this community is and that there really are good people out there!

For anyone looking to buy/sell with RedBul - I cannot recommend him enough!

So not actually "priceless". :)

teeson 08-14-17 10:58 AM

Saw this in person at Force Fed on sevens day.

Glad to have been able to see one of these kits executed properly in person. Powder coating colour choice looked great too

TomSmy 08-14-17 01:21 PM

Yep, that snapped shaft is a cool paperweight!

The engine almost ended up silver to be more conservative as I was worried if I would still like it in 10 years.......

I always wanted to do purple and thankfully my wife encouraged me to go with what I want now and not to worry about old me :icon_tup:

Time flies

10 years from now? That's three engines later as the RX7 flies.

:egrin:

This Made me smile from ear to ear!!! Pumped that a shop had "That Talk" with you instead of trying to push you towards a single conversion. I see it alll the time...people getting pushed into upgrades they think will only be minor...but end up resulting in Huge bills and un-finished products. I'm really PUmped for you man! And props to the shop for keeping you aligned with YOUR agenda and not theirs!!:icon_tup: Huge Ups to both of you guys!! Primo Car!! I love it! So Gorgeous!
