Wooo 7's Day!

Well for once the car is running and the weather played nice (sort of) for 7's day!

It's not Godzilla.....but I did find another creature to appreciate the Afflux Ver.V:

Updating the interior sound deadening

Well this is a job that took much longer to complete than I care to admit......It started off with me wanting to install my KTS rear super tower bar.

However, when doing this simple job I found that the tops of the rear tower mounts were white instead of black. This didn't really surprise me as I was aware that the car was originally white, then painted red, then finally it's current sparkly black color. So I proceeded to pull out the rear interior to see how much of the original paint remained....turns out lot!

After a quick clean and a light sanding, I ended up here:

As some of you know from my other post asking for help, this was the point where I discovered the the OEM sound deadening under the rear seats was either applied very poorly or had moved over time:

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...bde61d4806.jpg

The go to removal method is usually dry ice and a hammer, however dry ice just isn’t available where I live, but six cans of the computer duster/canned air did the trick.Again, I want to say a big thanks to Pete_89T2 for this tip!

For just over $60 CAD I removed all the sound deadening crap from beneath the seats/bins and the whole hatch area including spare wheel well.

FEED AFFLUX v5 08-16-20 07:48 PM

Unfortunately I did not take any photos with all the old deadening removed. I got too focused on task and went right to paint.

After a thorough de-greasing, a light sanding and other prep work to ensure no rust issues; I painted the whole rear interior with gloss black POR-15:

You putting something back in place of the stock sound deadener? Or, lightweight mods?

FEED AFFLUX v5 08-16-20 07:53 PM

At this point I have to admit there was a sunny day and I hooked everything up to go for a drive. All I can say is that with no rear divider and no sound deadening/carpet it was extremely loud!

Knowing this I decided to put in the effort to replace the sound deadening whilst I had easy access. I am sure most people will wonder why I bothered to paint when it all got covered up, but I am happy knowing the job was done right. I have to say it was actually fun installing the deadening and making everything shiny!

Another quick job while everything was accessible - I figured it was a good time to replace those crusty 25 year old speakers. The OEM ones basically disintegrated when I pulled them out so I am glad I did it.

Nothing fancy installed but they work nicely for my needs:

(Excuse the electrical tape - there is also proper heat shrink under there!)

FEED AFFLUX v5 08-16-20 08:04 PM

At this point I was ready to reinstall all the interior panels.

However, as many of you will understand, I have been suffering my fair share of annoying squeaks and rattles. So in an effort to eliminate them, I used a vibration dampening polyester felt tape between all joints and any contact points between the panels and the bodywork. It was a time consuming task but every little helps!

I also installed a Dynamat "DynaPad" as underlay for the rear carpet.

I still need to install a custom carpet for the rear hatch to finish everything off, but until then this looks just fine. Overall there is pretty much no evidence of all the work I did, so I am glad I took photos!

Looks like you caught me midway through posting!

I have indeed installed new sound deadening. The ~20lb of weight is a small price to pay for the benefits. Plus my car is already extremely light with all my other mods.

thanks for continuing to read my thread 👍

I was gonna ask about how loud it was without, but you mentioned it was pretty darn loud. I think you made the right moves. Work looks great.

Thanks!

yeah I was surprised how much louder it was. I have a feeling it was the spare wheel well that allowed most of the noise as it’s so close to the exhaust.

did you brush on or spray in the Por15?

I used a brush to paint it on. I’m not sure what magic formula they use but it leaves zero streaks or brush marks. Basically looks like it was powder coated.

I used their products on the suspension work I did previously and was extremely happy with the results. Hence why I knew this would turn out nice.

Whenever I drive the FD I almost never park it - I usually leave my garage, go for a rip and back to the garage.

I was cleaning up some photos and found these two which give an idea of just how ridiculous this car looks when there are other vehicles near it for comparison.......also how small it is!

No wonder I can't drive anywhere without attracting attention. Which is annoying because I am actually very introverted and hate attention....I should probably swap for a more inconspicuous vehicle.....

I also found these two photos, made me laugh as it looks like someone put an RC car or a Hot Wheels on the pavement for a picture!

yep! I was amazed no one on the province had taken it already, especially when personalized plates are so cheap here!
