got some parts on order that should be enough to get this thing in a position to run.
planning on getting everything in place to have my guy rewire the entire thing.

considering going aem infinity over pfc, but still up in the air with that.

will probably need your guys' help putting it all back together. stay tuned!

wutangben 03-12-15 11:25 PM

so little steps just about each day.

domestic parts ordered recently:
oil coolers/pedestal
xcessive LIM
irp oil filler
cj motorsports rails/fpr
id725/2000 injectors
powerflex black diff bushings
banzai trans crossmember/mount
hpp diff cradle/brace

pulled the stock exhaust off
pulled the stock ppf
pulled the stock diff
pressed out the old diff bushings (surprisingly all of my bushings look good)
installed the new powerflex blacks
had a bunch of stuff sandblasted
(they actually sandblasted more stuff than I thought they would)

just pulled the throttle body off tonight and removed the double throttle b/s.
gotta clean all the sand off of everything, and then throw it in my buddy's solvent tank

gotta get the DT hole welded up.

was going to throw my new differential in tonight, but I might wait till the HPP cradle arrives first.

no pics at the moment, ain't nothing you guys haven't seen before.

once I get the stuff back from being cleaned, i'm going to start mocking up all of the engine stuff, including the fuel setup, and then might start to tackle the vacuum lines, or at some point just drop the motor back in the car.

not exactly sure if I want to get it running before I have the engine bay painted.

will update again soon, hopefully with some pictures.

TwinCharged RX7 03-15-15 10:48 AM

Ditto.

wutangben 05-11-15 07:35 PM

not much progress. ordered the last of the gaskets/misc shit I believe I'll need.

mocked up my fuel rails/lines
figured out which block-off plates i'll be using/what i'll be deleting

trying to deduce how much of the solenoid rack/clump needs to go back in since I'm doing simplified sequential + azeknightz solenoids. I think I have too much in still, one of the screws was stripped so I couldn't completely separate the nest. gotta drill it out.

https://scontent-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hp...21286056_o.jpg

one of the pipes off of the BNRs is hitting the xcessive LIM. it's kinked anyway, so I'm having that cut off, shortened, and clocked a little bit so it's no longer an issue.

https://scontent-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hp...54696416_o.jpg

bought some paint to paint my stuff with, just waiting on a nice hot day to do it. (been raining a bunch lately)

installed the new diff. it's a cusco 2 way with 4.44. also installed the hpp 2in1 cradle brace.

https://scontent-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hp...01973317_o.jpg

going to put the suspension back together in the rear (had some stuff apart so I could pull the axles to drop the diff) then i'll try to get the car back on the ground so it'll be easier to start stripping the engine bay.

https://scontent-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hp...57301767_o.jpg

man how is there this much shit in the bay? it's been covered for so long I forgot how much was left.

some other pics:

https://scontent-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hp...19322005_o.jpg

(note: some of this stuff is loosely mocked up just so I can see what is in the way with what)

anyway, lazy/rushed update, but at least it's something

Narfle 05-12-15 12:04 AM

Didn't speedoflight run twins with the xcessive manifold? I think I've seen a light writeup on the board, if you haven't already found it.

wutangben 05-14-15 02:55 PM

not sure, when I search that username, there are no threads started by him..

I think I remember reading some threads about people grinding down something to get their BNRs to fit. Regardless, the turbos have been modified already (should take delivery on them today)

Received the last two gaskets I needed, and a fast reacting AIT from C. Ludwig (great service and price)

Brakes came in yesterday, too.

Hope to make some good progress this weekend!

wutangben 05-19-15 01:58 PM

I had my coolant line modified and got it to line up, as well as the oil line, but then I had the problem of my jdm y pipe hitting the xcessive lower intake manifold, (as well as clearance issues in the same place with the upper intake manifold). so I ground down a little more than I felt comfortable from the y pipe, ground down the upper intake manifold, then realized, even if I went to town on the lower intake manifold, there still wasn't going to be enough clearance.

https://scontent-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hp...b7&oe=55FD18C3

so we ended up clocking both turbos last night, and that solved the. the only concern I have left regarding that is how well my v-mount piping will line up with that small change. hopefully not much. I also realized how shitty the studs that I received with my BNR turbos were, so I will be replacing all of those.

https://scontent-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hp...25582686_o.jpg

I haven't had my camera in the garage for weeks, so I don't have many photos, and the ones I do have suck, but this is the boring part of the build anyway, so not too big of a deal.

I'm still mocking things up, and seeing how everything fits. Stripped down the rats nest to a piece that I believe I still need, and another part so I will still have 4 mounting points for my ignition coils. I will take pics of this in case anyone has any better ideas.

In other news, I pulled my stock oil coolers, all the AC stuff, and the radiator out of the engine bay. So mostly what is left is just wiring harness, hoses, and the brake booster/abs, etc.

slowly but surely moving along, and that's all that matters to me. if I don't keep up with it, well you guys see what happens, months go by with no progress.

wutangben 05-19-15 02:01 PM

another pic:

https://scontent-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hp...77899389_o.jpg

forgot to mention I painted some (not all) of the pipes, so got some good practice there. will paint the rest when it's nice out and I'm done banging everything around.

wutangben 05-25-15 11:35 PM

another weekend with some progress in the books.

Friday I tightened up my rear suspension and put the calipers back on. I also notched one of the underbraces that shared a bolt hole with my HPP diff brace. I didn't mention it before, but one of the stock braces didn't want to line up when I did the install. I was hoping I wouldn't have to widen the holes, and I didn't. just made a tiny notch where it was binding with the brace, and now it fits perfect.

I also put the rear suspension and brakes back together and tightened everything up. The only thing left I really need to do before I'd call it a roller is put fluid in the diff. Would have done it, but wasn't sure if I wanted to use 80w90 or 85w145. All these years I've been using kaaz diff oil in my 2ways, which I believe is 80w90.

I spent most of Saturday cleaning my garage and organizing my tools, which seems to be never-ending. Really happy with the results. Cleared off my work bench, and now it's actually being used as... well, a work bench.

Sunday, I decided it was time to kick things in gear and start locking this shit down. I stripped everything off the motor, and removed all of the tape/mask that was covering all the openings. Then started putting things on, in order, with the fresh gaskets. Spent a bunch of time that day and today scraping with a razor blade (fun).

I installed my injectors which was a breeze. No spacers or any nonsense needed with the CJ kit, just the inserts and everything went in without any problems.

Installed a new water pump housing gasket and attempted to install my new thermostat, but could not get the damn thing to fit with the seal on for the life of me. Was ready to burn the garage down after fumbling with it for longer than I care to admit, till I decided that it was not me, it was the seal. I don't think it's OEM, even though it came with my OEM thermostat. Anyone else struggled with this? The ring/seal fits in the thermostat housing without the thermostat inside of it, but as soon as I put it around the tstat, it will not fit. I'm sure one of my friends who actually knows how to work on cars will come by and have it in in like 10 seconds.

Today I spent some time with the upper intake manifold. I did my three block-off plates (used black rtv) Spent a fair amount of time scraping old gasket/gasket residue everywhere it needed, mostly the throttle body). Also spent a good amount of time cleaning parts.

I installed the freeze plugs in the xcessive LIM. Hoping they don't blow out at whatever boost level I end up running. I used red loctite.. hope it holds up.

Tightened up a bunch of other stuff, not going to bore you with the details. Installed the alternator, and some random brackets. Just trying to find as much stuff as I can to mock-up/install on the motor.

I noticed that the bracket from the solenoid rack/rats nest that fits into the UIM, to the left of the oil fill cap is not going to line up now (with the xcessive LIM installed). I hope this LIM ends up being worth all of the trouble it has caused me. I'm beginning to realize that I may be one of the few who's running this LIM with sequential twins, but I could be wrong.

https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...90271052_o.jpg

so sorry for boring you guys to death with my slow-motion build. I promise it will get better!

Ben

Narfle 05-27-15 12:01 AM

Yeah man, you're a space monkey with that LIM. Not unprecedented. Clearly not easy.

wutangben 05-27-15 02:35 AM

so my mechanic buddy and i managed to force the thermostat in the housing with the gasket. we measured the housing, and for some reason it's 1-2mm smaller in diameter than my other motor. not sure why this would be smaller, but made me feel better when he couldn't get it to fit either. took the two of us to force it in, but we finally got it.

we bent the bracket forward for the UIM, so hopefully that's the last of the fitment issues. I will say, the throttle wheel is awfully friggin close to the irp oil filler neck.

transferred the studs over from my old LIM to this new one before getting myself into trouble/stripping the holes with bolts.

let's see, swapped out alt pulley for a a shiny blue one, and installed the pineapple racing idler pulley. clearance on that to the t-stat housing is insane like less than 1mm.

lots of tight fitments.

tell pavel to man up!

wutangben 05-27-15 10:42 AM

have you seen pavel lately? he's got an amazing jew-fro. hope he doesn't cut it before gridlife.

OverEzzz 06-20-15 10:16 PM

Will you be going to an AEM Infinity unit? I also have bnr's with azeknight solenoids. It would be pretty sweet to run sequential turbos and have direct fire/e85 support. However, I couldn't find anyone on the forum who has successfully done this.

wutangben 06-29-15 02:57 PM

I'm not sure just yet. I'm going Infinity on my S13, and we'll see how that goes.

In other news, got sick of not driving, so picked this up in the interim. Has kept me occupied the past few weeks, so little/no progress on the FD. (however, something I've been looking/waiting for for years just showed up, so that should spark me back in the right direction)

https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...83278626_o.jpg

https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...79065838_o.jpg

I will say, I am a bit worried that the FD won't compare to this thing on the track...
