'93 Killah Bee CYM

I want to start this thread by talking about the very beginning of my journey. Now, I could go into extreme detail, and draw this out really really long, but that would probably start to bore some people,(or all people) and it would even bore me.
And that's not necessary. So I will get into some detail, but stick to the main points, and make this as fun as possible!
.........................................
In 2015 I was looking for a nicer used car then what I had.
Something in the $4000 or $5,000 range.
The car I was looking for was not a Mazda at all.
Then one day, when I was looking online, I saw a cheap FD RX-7 with a lot of issues, but not too much more money than what I was looking to spend on this other car .
All the sudden I remembered back, to years ago, when I first saw the FD RX-7, and absolutely fell in love with it.
I never in my wildest dreams imagined that I would ever be able to afford an FD RX-7.
It just always seemed completely like a dream that would never happen.
That was when I was much younger.
So when I saw this car online, this relatively cheap, not the greatest condition, many issues RX-7, for that low of a price, all the sudden it seemed possible.
Even if it had to be something that wasn't in the best condition, it was now atleast possible..
So, I decided not to get that car I was looking for in the beginning, and focus on saving towards an FD RX-7, and seeing if I could actually do this thing.
.....................................
The beginning of the FD madness:
I started looking for my FD RX-7 in late 2015.
At first I was just looking at shells or rollers.
The bare minimum.
As time went on, I saved more money, and started looking at nicer cars. Cars with high mileage, but working cars.
Then the mileage started dropping on the ones I was looking at, and they started getting even better overall.
As time went on I saved more and more money, and my standards went up and up and up.
This was always my dream car, and I had come this far, so at this point, I was all in!
The cars I was now looking at were great condition, with low miles, and I started looking at Base models and R1 and R2 models.
From the start of this process in 2015, I looked at hundreds of cars, and towards the end, found some very very great FDs!
Finally I started finding ones I wanted to look at in person.
I went to look at an SSM R2 in Delray Beach and came close to getting it, but ultimately decided it wasn't what I wanted.
Then all the sudden, I was told about the exact car I had wanted, with very low miles and the exact color I wanted.
Montego Blue with a hard top. I had found the perfect car!
Montego Blue Base model with very low miles.
I was so excited I could have probably done backflips!
When I went to have it fully inspected, I was met with some resistance by the owner.
This was very difficult for me, because I had my heart set on this car.
So much so, that I was willing to pay the full asking price on it.
Talk about a kid in a candy store type situation! That really was extremely heartbreaking to not be able to get the exact car that I had been wanting for so long.
So the search continued, although I was getting pretty down about the whole thing.
I really felt like giving up at times, after not being able to get the Montego Blue car.
I found a few cars on AutoTrader and talked to the man that was in charge of helping sell them for the owner.
The one I was after was a Vintage Red 1993 R1 with 15,000 original miles and a few upgrades.
I drove from my house in Miami Florida all the way to West Chester Pennsylvania by myself to go look at this car.
The owner also had two other FDs.
A 1994 Vintage Red R2 model, and a 1993 Competition Yellow Mica R1.
Yellow was not just the last color choice for me, but not even a choice I had considered at all. That's how much I did not want yellow...
So, I test drove the VR R1, and it felt great. I loved it. So I got it checked out.
Compression test and pre-purchase inspection. Everything seemed pretty good, but when we got it up on the lift, I noticed way more rust underneath than I was willing to accept. So I passed.
Another disappointment.
And this time another huge disappointment because I had just drove 1200 miles to look at this car, and I was about to drive 1200 miles back to Miami with no dream car.
I was feeling pretty bummed out.
The day before heading back to my home in Miami, I decided to take a quick look underneath, and see if the condition on these other 2 FDs, was any better.
Well, they were..
I considered first the R2 because of the color, but really had it in my mind that I wanted an R1.
This left me with the dead last choice color of Competition Yellow Mica.
Uhh... but, what the hell!
Let me climb in and take a little ride..
Well, once I got into this car and saw the yellow from the inside of the car, my heart flipped a switch, and I instantly loved it!
It was a crazy thing to experience.
I've always been in love with this car, so I'm sure that helped, as this car is the sexiest car I've ever seen, and no matter what color it is, it's just beautiful.
So, I got the car inspected, and it passed!
I then set up a time with the owner the next day to make the deal.....
The next day, I bought my dream car!
1993 Mazda RX-7 R1. 33,600 miles! Competition Yellow Mica!

......
There's more. Soon.... (and pictures)

Nice! I LOVE me a CYM car. Yellow is a really polarizing color.

Take good care of her and she'll take care of you.

Great story!

I bought the R2, it's a good one :)

I also sold Rich a few parts that he put on your car. Looking forward to updates etc... and enjoy the best sports car on the planet!

CYMs are over rated... :icon16:

congrats!

MazdaspeedR1 02-11-18 11:33 AM

I'm a little jealous. I had a choice between my BB and a CYM and I chose the BB because of 10,000 less miles and a thousand dollars cheaper and I regret it now.

asesereker 02-11-18 11:44 PM

Thank you everyone for the nice comments.
Pictures are coming soon.
Yes, the FD yellow is something special. Not a normal yellow.
I see yellow on other cars and I cringe. Haha.
Oh, and I believe it's normal for us humans to want what we don't have.
You got a BB FD, and you want a CYM.
I get a CYM, and I want a VR or MB! Haha.
That's how it is.
These cars are sexy no matter what the color!
Very easy to understand why people get 2 or 3 or 4!
Or in the case of my car's previous owner, 14 FDs!

Get ready for a flood of pictures, folks...... yours truly performed the work on Greg's barn-find (-ish) CYM. I'll post tons of pics and work with Greg to allow him to insert his thoughts, comments, jokes etc :D

One thing I will say...... super low miles (around 33k), but the original owner kept the pre-cat on and most likely never popped the hood after a spirited drive. I was shocked by the poor condition of the rubber/plastic components on such a low mileage machine. Greg and I devised a plan to make her better, faster, stronger........ :asthanos:

Ok, so a few things.......

This first part is just a little add on to my opening post.

The inspections on the VR R1 and my CYM, in Pennsylvania, were done by John Renna (JhnRX7).
He did a great job. Super cool guy.

Once I bought the car, I then had it shipped on an enclosed trailer from West Chester, Pennsylvania, straight to Rich's house in Fort Myers, Florida.
Soon, Rich began his magic!
..........
...in response to pictures...
Ah yes. The beginning.
Rich did a ton of work. Excellent work in fact. He's very thorough, and was always very clean, careful and thoughtful when it came to my car. (From the specific way he would jack it up, to the protection on fenders, etc.)
I always felt good about having my car with him. (I can only imagine how neurotic I'd have been, if I'd taken it to a shop here in Miami, or up in West Palm.)

And what a difference it made when we eliminated that huge stock wheel gap, Rich!
I remember when Rich first lowered the car down after he put in the new suspension!
Wow, I was amazed!
And the feeling of raw excitement was crazy! It looked absolutely beautiful!

Really clean car. I sat in the driver seat when I came to visit Rich in Ft. Myers. I may have farted in the seat, though I can't recall.

This is the direction I want to go with my 21k mile 94 CW Base. Just update the old stuff to new OEM to freshen it up after 25 years. Rich did a nice job and working on a stock engine bay is not easy.

asesereker 04-12-20 11:24 PM

Wow!

Been awhile since I looked at this.
It's truly amazing the amount of work Rich (GoodfellaFD3S) did on my CYM.
He showed it tons of love, and I am forever grateful!
It's been over 2 and a half years since it was in his care, and to this day, she performs very very well.
What a blast to drive!
This is a solid machine.
I'm really glad I took the time, did my research, and found the best person to bring my newly purchased FD RX-7 to.
Looking at these pictures...
WOW!
Thank you for everything Rich!
You really are... the BOSS!
