1999 RHD Engine Rebuild
I'm rebuilding my 99 RX-7's engine.
i dont know if this is the right section to post this, but here goes. im doing just a street port, will single turbo it and a few other upgrades and minor changes. This should be fun as its my first dorito to play with. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...80f01919bb.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...6cda0481c5.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...b3aef70baf.jpg I already yanked the engine and stripped it down, so check out the pics so far. |
Looking forward to updates. What turbo are you going with?

Its very rewarding to do this yourself. I would suggest doing some reading on side seal clearances. They're a lot more important than some people realize. Also, don't reuse anything that isn't a "hard" engine part. Yes parts like oil control rings and bearings can be within spec but replace them anyway.
I would also recommend doing some reading on porting techniques, some believe glass smooth is correct while others believe it needs to be rough. Both have their reasons, come to your own conclusion. Also it should go without saying but USE A TEMPLATE. Do not try and eyeball it. More than anything, make sure your outline from the template is clear and precise. Take your time and measure everything 100x, triple check all your spring and seal locations, directions and orientations. make sure your tension bolts are in the correct locations, they are not all the same. A questionable water seal groove, is a bad water seal groove. Step wear on the irons is important lol. Theres an encyclopedia series worth of inspection criteria and community notes through the internet. For maximum life and best results, consult both but keep in mind mazda built their engines for factory spec and their inspection and assembly criteria supports that. Rx7club is the best resource for information in the world period. If you are unsure, don't guess. Everything you could possibly need is here. |
Missing oil control rings? Seriousl, WTF, over...
Well the previous owner/builder didn't install the outer oil control rings. I just can't believe this. Yup, I'm gald I tore this engine apart just to port it
http://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7c...7b43371f18.jpg Iron's painted up http://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7c...f14836524d.jpg now to wait on parts http://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7c...e0b1f868cd.jpg I had half the oil rings in my engine when i tore it apart http://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7c...0e972005f7.jpg this is what was on each side of each rotor, only the inner oil control rings. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...52994b839e.jpg , only to find missing pieces. Now i'm on a quest to find parts for the internals. Anyhow, i just recently painted the irons up with engine block paint. I also got a small list of parts that i'm going to replace as i found just a few items that need to go into the bin. While i'm waiting for parts, I picked up a street port template from Mazdatrix, and i hope to have some time later this week to port this sucker out. Here are some pics for giggles. |
thanks for the heads up on where to look for info. glad i joined up in this forum.
Cheers Gene |
well i feel a bit dumb/humbled now. Found the oil control rings that were missing. thats what i get when friends help out while i go to the bathroom to take a dump.
From the looks of it, I will need just 1 outer oil control ring. I already pulled the trigger on springs and o-rings, as well as apex seals and other intern items i do need. I just need a stud kit to continue once all those other parts i just ordered are in. Also i need a new woodruff key P/N: 11-301J as mine does not look all too good. guess i'll be ordering that from Mazda, unless i can find one on here. |
Cracked outer oil control ring. Great...
Of course 1 of the outer oil control rings is Cracked, so here you guys go with a lovely picture.

Looking for studs now.
Well, I should have the last of the engine Internal parts showing up this week, but I still haven't set my mind on which stud kit to get. Mind you, I don't plan on going over 500hp.
So what do you guys recommend out there in the land of the internets? Cheers, Gene |
i'm going to need to get a stud kit since i'm gonna push up to 500 ponies.
Any recommendations? |
