1995 Type R Bathurst

Figured I should do up a build thread finally after 6 months of ownership.

Since most people look at pics vs. reading, I'm not going to type a bunch of info unless requested.

Ordered the car from an online car sales website. Here's how it was delivered to my house. Picked up the car for $4600 delivered. I had no idea what all came installed or done to it. I was told that it runs good and saw the pics posted below (other than the delivery pic). So I figured for the price, it would probably need a little bit of work.

Upon getting possession of it, I immediately started checking out what all came with the car.
1st I noticed that the exhaust was a little smokey and smelled really rich. SO after looking at the car some more I opened the hood and saw that a GReddy TD06-20G turbo and Trust intercooler. I knew it didn't have Power FC, so I pulled the kick panel and saw it has a Knightsports ECU.

After inspecting it I decided to do a compression test and notice I was getting 3 equal bounces on both rotors at 80 PSI. I decided at that time that I would pull the motor and rebuild it while I had time and the weather was still nice outside.

After getting it out, I noticed the clutch was aftermarket and was on its last leg as well. So what better time to change that out as well?

And so the fun began...

After cleaning up the parts and taking measurements I realized most of everything was within limits. Replaced all the seals with an OEM seal kit. Atkins Cryo 2mm apex seals. All new OEM springs. Side seals were still good, so I reused them. Anyways, reassembled months later and had bought a few more parts.

I replaced plugs/plug wires, the clutch with a Exedy 3 puck and a matching flywheel. Reinstalled the motor and connected everything up. Cranked right up the first time and filled the garage with smoke! Glad it worked as I had ZERO rotary experience or engine rebuilding knowledge. I'm an aircraft mechanic, so that helped! Sold the 17" SSR wheels and bought some ENKEI RP03 18X9 +18 wheels. New headlight lids since mine were brittle and some Origin front fenders. A Grip Royal steering wheel w/ NRG quick release. The body kit is an authentic Burnout kit. Anyways, here are yet more pics...

Also bought a 7 point roll cage (still undecided if I'm going to install it), but had to buy it because I got a killer deal on it. Tomorrow I'm dropping the car off to get a fresh coat of paint and to get the fenders and lids put on. I'll take some pics of it outside before the process gets started and after. I know the car needs to go lower....and it will. I'm moving to Germany next month, so I have to leave it up at the level its at until I receive it over there. Oh, here's the car info. "Special Edition"

95R_Bathurst 01-20-12 06:03 AM

So after going through all of the numbers I've spent to this point. Just over $10,000 and about to drop another $1700 on the body work/paint.

Great project. Looks really nice, good luck with her.

95R_Bathurst 01-21-12 02:32 AM

Thanks! Well I didn't get a picture today when I dropped it off due to crappy weather, but I'll hopefully get some pics throughout the repaint process and definitely when its completed.

The car is actually in more pieces than this as of today, but I didn't have my camera on me when I went to check out the progress and to go over more details. The rear hatch is off and a small bit of rust is getting removed from where water would run off the roof.

Nice build. Should be good when its done

95R_Bathurst 01-24-12 10:51 AM

Thanks! I stopped by the shop today and the body guy was prepping the front fenders and front bumper. The rest of the car is just sanded and already for paint. So hopefully by this weekend the paint should be applied and ready for some wet sanding and buffing. Basically will be like new again, only 17 years old though.

While from this side of the pacific a Type R Bathurst is a "special edition" that sticker calls it out as standard. Even our standard US cars have that line "Special Edition", notice that it is a heading as others on the line, the particular info is to be filled in below, which in this case is blank, thus not a "Special".

95R_Bathurst 05-16-12 02:32 AM

Thanks for that info Julian, much appreciated! :D

I have a damn oil leak that won't go away. I've ordered the Banzai-Racing Oil Pan Brace, but figured I'd go the extra step of getting a new oil pan that is straight and true. Best place to get one with the quickness....ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHERE? Living over in Germany now.

oh my god that looks sexy

Here are some updated pics after the paint job and 3 month long shipment from Japan to Germany.

Looks like it's in pretty good shape!

Fortune_Seven 05-24-12 04:29 AM

Looking good!

On another note, I would love to own that Isuzu car hauler in the first pic! So sweet!

95R_Bathurst 06-21-12 02:46 PM

So I ordered some Work Emotion XD9's 18X10 +18 in white.

Probably won't get them to my house for several weeks though.

Now to get some spanner wrenches so I can lower the ride height to fit my new wheels.

Anarchy99 06-24-12 10:15 AM

So jealous!!

Len-Len 06-24-12 03:55 PM

XD9's are really gonna set that kit off nicely. Great work thus far.

95R_Bathurst 06-26-12 04:19 AM

Thanks, I'm pretty stoked about getting them. It's a shame that I can't take the car back to the US. Oh well, I can always strip it and transfer the parts onto a US Spec FD.
