New Product: Adjustable Tension Alternator Bracket For 79-91

1 Attachment(s)
We have developed our Adjustable Tension Alternator Bracket kit for use on 79-91 12A & 13B engines. The purpose is to allow users to achieve the correct level of belt deflection. The spec is:

New Belt: 12-15mm @ 10kg
Used Belt: 14-17mm @ 10kg

We find that most owners simply put a pry bar under the alternator and hope they achieve the proper level of tension. This was the technique that was used for most cars up unto the 90's when Mazda incorporated an adjustable tensioner on the FD and Cosmo.

For years we have had engines come in to the shop with aggressive front/rear stationary gear bearing wear. One of the main causes of this wear is over-tightened belts. When the alternator belt is too tight it actually pulls on the e-shaft leading to excessive wear on one side on the bearings. Below is a pic of excessive front stationary gear bearing wear.

Having proper belt tension also reduces waterpump and alternator bearing failures, as well as increasing belt life.

We have even seen a few cracked water pump housings at the alternator pivot point from extremely over-zealous owners.

Our Adjustable Tension Alternator Bracket is fabricated from 3/16" laser cut, it is then Powder Coated Black to prevent corrosion. The kit comes with stainless steel hardware.

The threaded hole on the alternator does need to be drilled out for the adjuster to be installed. If you have already installed an FD alternator there is no modification required.

Nice, will have to order one as well.

If I am putting this on an FC that is using an FD Alternator and serpentine belt conversion, are there any special provisions that must be made?

Banzai-Racing 05-15-13 11:22 AM

Should not have any problems, it is actually little less work since the hole is already drilled for the adjuster on the FD alternator.
