Banzai Racing 20B GT42RS 93 FD

This is one of our shop cars that we work on when we get a chance. A year ago I decided that is was time for a 20B. The core engine arrived on 8-27-08, yesterday (8-26-09) we fired it up for the first time. We did not plan it this way, it just happened.

So on to the good stuff. We were lucky enough to source a D series engine (D303)for the project. We rebuilt the engine with an aggressive streetport. It required two new housings so we opted for two brand new 20B housings, just to keep the numbering correct. Exhaust sleeves have all been swapped for FD's. The Exedy twin disc clutch was used to get the power to the trans.

We decided it was a perfect time to strip the engine bay and have it repainted. So we delayed the project by a few weeks so that this could be done:

For the turbo we went with the Garrett GT42RS (102mm) with the Tial 1.01 v-band turbine housing. We also used the Tial 60mm wastegate.

More pics of turbo, wastegate, manifold, and downpipe: http://www.banzai-racing.com/20B_installation3.htm

Engine management is the Microtech LT-16 (one of the very first in the country when we bought it). We designed a custom adapter harness to make it plug and play with the hybrid Cosmo/FD engine harness that we made. This made it much simpler to keep the speedo, wipers, fan relays, etc all functioning normally. Honestly when looking in the engine bay it looks like there is a OEM engine harness, that is because it is.

There was lots and lots of custom piping, bracketry, etc. to make for the project. We made a custom Greddy elbow to mate to the 20B TB. We used a custom mounted Koyo N-flow and dual 25 row oil coolers to keep the fluids cool. Every vacuum, fuel, oil coolant line is all ss braided.

Now we get to start driving it and putting some break in miles on it. The initial short trips have already been a blast, the car spins the tires with any blip of the throttle.

Wow. Looks great. I just love how the 20B looks snuggled into an FD chassis. Great work as usual!!

catch-22 08-27-09 04:24 PM

just amazing!!! you guys do awesome work congrats!

Supernaut 08-27-09 04:28 PM

WOW very cool. Im glad you repainted the engine bay to. That motor deserves a clean home.

seven lust 08-27-09 04:31 PM

wow! that is so nice....I wish I had the patients for a 20b project and my pockets were deep enough for a build like this.

20B-Power 08-27-09 04:32 PM

Awesome Work.. You guys Rock...

G's 3rd Gen 08-27-09 04:32 PM

Unbelievable. Best conversion I have seen yet. Looks factory..

20B-Power 08-27-09 04:35 PM

A few questions.. are you using a undertray and what subframe are you using. Also did you make the turbo manifold? Any pics of it?

RotaryRocket93 08-27-09 04:49 PM

Can someone hand me a towel... I just came.

estevan62274 08-27-09 05:06 PM

It would look better if it had A/C and power steering!

NO I'm just joking

That car is BAS ASS!!!

That was exactly what we thought.

Right now there is not an undertray, I will be designing one, it is a very short distance from the IC to the radiator.

We used the Hinson subframe, but we had it e-coated for durability, also installed a de-powered steering rack from Maval

http://www.banzai-racing.com/20B/Eng..._installed.jpg

We designed the manifold, using the RB flange and then had it Jet-Hot ceramic coated.

If my engine ever blows...I'm sending it to you :D

Awesome work :icon_tup:

cabaynes 08-27-09 05:24 PM

That is absolutely beautiful work. Amazing that it can look so cleanly done, without a mess of wires and vacuum lines going everywhere.

Extremely impressive work!

Banzai-Racing 08-27-09 06:00 PM

Thanks for all the compliments. The goal was to make it as "factory" looking as possible, so that someone that doesn't know RX7's wouldn't know that this wasn't the original engine. Obviosly it is a little more shiny.

KaiFD3S 08-27-09 06:04 PM

Very nice work.....

Banzai-Racing 08-27-09 06:40 PM

Here are the side views of the engine bay. All nipples on the UIM and LIM were removed, tapped and plugged or a fitting installed.

..and for those tht have asked via PM, it idles at a smooth 900rpm and is currently pulling 16" vacuum

That is beautiful. Love the fresh paint in the 'bay, looks like it's still wet :) Looks kind of funny, the shock tower nuts are painted too :tonque: What are you expecting for power/torque on this thing? Running pump fuel? Water injection? Please post your dyno chart when you get it!

Banzai-Racing 08-27-09 06:53 PM

I am making a custom strut tower bar, so those nuts will not be there much longer, no need to remove them until the bar is done.

Yes it is running pump gas, we will see what it makes when the engine has enough break-in miles. I don't ever make predictions on power. I will tune it to 15psi first and see what it puts down, then think about installing AI.

Our 91 vert, the little sister to this has the Cosmo 13b-re with a GT35R it makes 435rwhp @15psi (pump fuel) on a Mustang Dyno. This should make more then that :)

grimple1 08-27-09 08:00 PM

holy bajeebus that's sweet.

94touringFD 08-27-09 08:48 PM

I'm gonna have to show people this thread when they ask who built my engine, this is truly impressive. I'm anxious to see what it's capable of at 15psi alone.

Uncle Hungry 08-27-09 09:33 PM

Very nice work, probably the nicest 20b engine bay I've seen.

Rx7aholic 08-27-09 09:33 PM

That is one hell of an engine bay, that's the outcome when we take our time to get project done, do it right the first time, it is truely a piece of art.

good job. wish i had deeeeeeeppppp pockets:(

smog-guy707 08-27-09 09:54 PM

If I am ever ready to do a 20B, I will be getting it done by you guys. Awsome work:icon_tup:

RCCAZ 1 08-27-09 10:05 PM

So, I take it there's no air filter in the plans? Nice job BTW. Clean ass install! It appears to be about 6 inches further forward that other installs I've seen. Is that true or just an optical illusion??
