lilroach- no one waste your time

He contacted me about an engine I have for sale. I drove 100 miles to meet him. After continually lying about how far away he was, he finally shows up at the rest area 2 hours late. Then he proceeds to try and pay with a PERSONAL check from out of state for $2,500. I may have been stupid enough to wait for ever, but who in their right mind would accept a personal check from a stranger for that amount. :dunno:

WoW...that's pretty bad! I wouldn't accept a Personal Check under those circumstances either.

Sometimes you can tell a lot about a person from their username.

Yeah, all MY roaches are more like a half a doobie.

It's nice to hear the opinion of another seller. I couldn't decide if my buyer was naive enough to think that was normal or what. Cashiers check would have been no problem at all.

My lesson learned, get a deposit before making the trip.

Yah, I've gotten stuck in a somewhat similar situation before. I just don't even waste my time anymore with people I don't feel I can trust.

^^ There are way to many shady people out there. That sucks you wasted a trip.

Did you guys agree on a form of payment before meeting up? Not saying he was in the right, he defintely wasn't, but I think you could have saved time by saying up front what is acceptable as payment.

while i agree with you, communication is key "most" people have common sense not to accept personal checks. he must of belonged to that other group of people:scratch:

i wouldn't of received it either unless there was said bank near by where it could have been cash on the spot:dunno:

Yea I never assume on these forums. Part of the reason why is because when I joined, I thought personal checks was acceptable. I didn't have much experience buying and selling on forums so it was all new to me. You just never know hahaha.

I agree I should have mentioned for him not to bring a personal check. Everyone knows the saying about when you assume something. It's not the check that I found the most frustrating, it was the fact he continually lied to me and kept me waiting for hours. I kept telling myself I should just leave, but I am a nice guy. I would have felt really bad had I made him waste a trip and he really was stuck in traffic. But....

I googled construction in PA and WV when I returned home and there was hardly any. So he definately deliberately lied to me for hours about where he was and what was holding him up. I think he planned everything, and figured if I waited long enough I would become impatient and take the check.

If I could have verified it, it would have been cool. But we were meeting on a Saturday night, at a rest stop, on Labor Day weekend. It would have been days before my bank was even open. Not to mention that my bank would of placed a hold on it just due the amount of $2,500. He offered to give me his driver's license number, but that didn't make me feel anymore secure.

str8ryd 09-24-09 09:15 AM

Good move on not accepting the check in the end. A bank has a week or so to verify funds so even it clears immediately they can overturn it later. Seller beware!!!

Also, I was in the same predicament once. I even posted a thread about the member "Fastassturbo2". He made me wait nearly 3 hours and I would NEVER do so, but I talked to him quite a bit and he generally seemed like a good guy. That was the one-time I was WAYYYY off base on my judgment.
